1 VICTORIAN ASSOCIATION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETIES INC. ABN Incorporation No.: A B P.O. Box 2010, South Melbourne Vic NEWSBRIEF March 2014 Vol.41 No. 3 COMING EVENTS VAPS Half Yearly Meeting 23 March VAPS Convention Geelong May. Phillip Island Camera Club 20th Birthday Anzac Weekend. (see inside) Warragul National Exhibition June. Open each day, 10am 4pm Pakenham National Entries close Friday July 11 Judging Saturday July 26 Exhibition 6 & 7 September. President s Message It s amazing how time slips away; it s hard to believe that we are heading into March already. It won t be long before we are all preparing for our Easter break and hopefully taking lots of great images for our portfolios. The programme for the VAPS conference is complete with registration forms now being sent out to clubs and available on line. My congratulations and heartfelt thanks go to the team who has put together this year s conference. It s a great programme, with a lot of opportunities to take great images and with a variety of speakers who are sure to inspire. The VAPS management committee has now decided on a new format for our website and are now progressing towards having it built. As yet we do not have an exact timeline for this to be operational, as we are waiting for confirmation from the developers. A quick reminder also goes out to all the clubs to get your entries ready for the interclub, as the closing deadline of March 23 rd is fast approaching. VAPS has created a Facebook page to provide another avenue for the flow of information and exchange of ideas. To keep up with the latest go to this link: VAPS/ ?ref=settings and like our page. To maximize this we ask that you encourage other members to do the same. Ron Speed

5 Development of a Photo-Book-Competition for Camera Clubs & their members by John Spring February 2014 ( questions/comments - john_spring@dodo.com.au) v2e Photo-Books are now a popular and cost effective alternative way of printing your digital images. They can show a recent holiday trip, concentrate all the family history into an album or just illustrate the images you enjoy capturing as part of your photography. The costs of printing a photobook have plummeted and the quality of the printing and binding has increased considerably in recent years. It is now time for the Camera Club community to include the Photo Book amongst the range of events that will give new impetus to existing members photography and attract others to learn and participate in producing a professional looking book with your quality images'. These article provides back ground to the current initiative. One Country Camera Club (Macedon Ranges PS) and a City Camera Club (MelbourneCC) have agreed to run educational seminars and each undertake a pilot Photo-Book- Competition (P-B-C) during 2014 in conjunction with the sponsoring local 'PhotoBookShop' printing company. The two photobook seminars (involving pre-registration) are proposed to be available for all VAPS Club members and announcements by the two Club running the pilot competitions are expected to be announced shortly in March. A set of initial P-B-C rules have been developed with input from the PhotoBookShop printing company and the pilot clubs Macedon Ranges and Melbourne Camera Clubs. A web site is being constructed and will be available in April to provide the best 'over the internet' operational mechanism with the lowest price for the best book quality that provides 'a level playing field' from which the pilot PhotoBookCompetitions will start. The most difficult part of the Competition concept has been formulating the 'standard book' which all must use and so provides a level playing field for judging the content photography, artwork, text and graphics. The standard book is not judged just the content and cover. So after much consideration and debate, it has been defined as a 300mm x 300mm square book with a hard photocover having 40 pages (20 sheets) of 170gsm semi -gloss silk paper. Only one software package (downloaded so it can be used off-line) supplied by the printing company can be used. Yes it is widely used in the PhotoBook industry and been used and tested. The period of the competition extends over approximately 5 months (April to September) and ends up with a Club presentation night where the 3 Judges will bring and show the books submitted and comment on all the book entries similar to Clubs existing Print/EDI competitions. Who and how much I hear you all asking? Registration & purchase of a minimum voucher will provide a posted proof book and the final competition submission book. This Competition Voucher starts at $50 but additional 'proof book' can be ordered and paid for online. Club Administrators (the Secretary) must have previously registered their agreement to the rules and processes to obtain a 'Club Registration Number' and 'Competition PhotoBook registration & agreed dates' with the PhotoBookShop contact. Clubs can then announce the details and dates and the Secretary will be able to provide registration numbers to their financial members to register and purchase a Competition voucher for their Club's Photo-Book-Competition. The above description is a short resume of what is a quite complex arrangement. A four cornered hat would be a good starting description. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the VAPS half yearly meeting Sunday afternoon March 23rd where a short presentation will be made to Club representatives that are in attendance. Obviously the two proposed 2014 PhotoBook trials will provide a great deal of practical feedback which may be subsequently incorporated into revised rules and operational processes. There will be another presentation at the VAPS Geelong Convention on the Saturday morning (May 24th). I am always happy to discuss concerns on this new Camera Club photo initiative with any members. 5
