4 File naming conventions for competition images Please make sure that you name your files correctly. The Committee has given the Competition Steward the absolute discretion to reject entries that are consistently named incorrectly. With more than 90 competition entries each month, the Competition Steward's task is already very time-consuming without having to rename files. The file naming rules are: For EDIs: Start with Member number Followed by one space (no dashes, no double spaces, no hyphens. Just one space) Image name An example is nn My fabulous photo For prints: Please put the following information on the top right-hand corner of the back of your print: Your member number Image title Task name (e.g. Nature or open task or "B&W print") Orientation mark Please remember for EDIs no dashes, no double spaces, no hyphens between the member number and the image name. Just one space. Helen is spending far many more hours than she needs to in re-naming files. And then there s the extra time she has to spend in asking members to re-size image to the correct specifications. Judging courses The Australian Photographic Judges Association offers many excellent training courses and workshops. Its mission is to aid in the education and up-skilling of photography judges and to facilitate in the organisation and communication of judges across Australia. If you re interested, have a look through its website, and if you have any queries, please contact Alfred Zommers, AP- JA asgz47_99@outlook.com Page 4

13 Competition images We know that people do not deliberately make mistakes when uploading their competition images, but it happens more often than it should. There is only a very small window of time for Helen to receive the entries, process them and get them to the judge. The Committee asks that, for every EDI, every member checks that: The image title starts with their member number. The image is a jpg. Committee update The image is no more than 1920 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high (regardless of landscape or portrait orientation). There are no commas, dashes or underscores between the member number and the image title. There is only one space between the member number and the image name For prints, please add to the details on the back whether your image is for the task or the B&W competition. Helen should not have to spend time making these decisions on your behalf. The Committee resolved to give Helen the authority to reject images if the same member keeps making the same mistakes, even after being asked to be more careful. The rules, which include details of size and naming requirement, and instructions for re-sizing are on the webpage here Prints at North Ringwood Community House It is about time we replaced the images on display in the corridors at North Ringwood Community House. If you were awarded a merit or above in our of the competitions in 2016, please give a print to Neil, who will arrange for it to be mounted and hung at NRCH. It doesn't matter if it was A or B grade, or if it was B&W, EDI or a print although we obviously need prints to put on the walls. Club laptop We have been very lucky to be able to use donated computers in the past, but have decided that we need a computer with more capacity than is generally available in donated machines. We want to broaden the mentoring programme to include workshops on various aspects of post-production techniques, and plan to get a laptop that will easily run Lightroom and Photoshop, as a minimum. 14 The bull-racing story Kevin Fairley In early 2013 I was at the final stage of a building project in Bali and flying back to Melbourne to see my wife. I went to the doctor to check out a swollen throat and it was then I found out that I had throat cancer (I hadn t smoked for the last 35 years). The next morning I was in hospital having tests and within a couple of weeks, started a seven-week chemo and radio therapy course it knocked the hell out of me! Towards the end of the treatment, after losing more than 10 kgs and thinking I might not pull through, I did, and after a few months of rehabilitation, I gradually got back to a reasonable state of health and said to myself that I cannot waste another day of my life. The first photoshoot I did after recovering was the bull racing in Sumatra / Indonesia, and after three airflights and a six-hour drive into the highlands, I was the only foreigner at the races. It was the most adrenalin-filled day I could ever have imagined, and I ended up with some of the most action-packed photos any photographer could wish to take. The camera and I were covered in mud and in fact the only way to get the dried mud off my camera was under running water. To my amazement, after dropping my camera three times when crazy bulls ran into spectators, the camera still worked. I hope you enjoy my photos from that special day. Page 14

16 Invitations to events in the photographic world The Bureau of Meteorology invites all photographers to enter its photo competition for the 2018 weather calendar. Entries close on 31 March. More details at Together with Hunter & Barrel and Canon Australia, Ringwood Camera House would like to invite you to a special event. Join us at Hunter & Barrel (Town Square), renowned for its exceptional food and service, for a Food Photography work shop. The event is being held on April 09 with two sessions 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm. What do I need to bring? Your Mirrorless or DSLR camera, lenses, charged batteries, memory cards and all your enthusiasm. I am not a professional photographer will that be a problem? Don't be silly, if you have a Mirrorless or DSLR camera it does not matter what your skill level is, come down and learn how to take succulent food photos. Where is the event? The event is being held at Hunter and Barrel a restaurant located in Eastland's Town Square. Click here for more details Page 16
17 # FRAME MELB We are inviting you to share an image that captures the essence of life in Melbourne. All you have to do is take a photo looking through a window of your favourite space in the city. The photo should include the window frame and part of the room interior in the shot but should not have any people in it. Then just #FRAMEMELB the image in your Instagram or Facebook posts. We also ask you to caption or hashtag the photo with the postcode of the suburb in which you took it. A selection of these images will then be chosen for uploading onto the Frame Melbourne website. From this selection a number of the images will be printed, framed and exhibited throughout 2017 at the temporary Melbourne Quarter Hoarding Gallery on the corner of Spencer and Flinders streets in Melbourne. Check out the website and Instagram framemelb Yarra Valley photographic tour Croydon Camera House is also hosting a photographic tour of the Yarra Valley. Click here for full details. Page 17
