5 MPS Outings Outings Report- September There was both a mid-week and weekend outing in September. On Friday 11 September a group of eight visited National Rhododendron Gardens at Olinda to view and photograph the spring display of flowering trees. As the preceding weather conditions had been generally cooler, the peak flowering time was at least two weeks away. However there were a number of magnolias and rhododendrons in full bloom, and plenty of flowers. Best to return when the azaleas around the lake and cherry blossoms were more advanced. Our intrepid photographers cornered a number of kookaburras and we can expect multiple kooka shots in future competitions. Lunch and socialising at Olinda was a highlight. Check out the Outings section of the website for a sample of shots. On Saturday 19 September a group of six ventured to the Royal Melbourne Show. We all travelled together by train and arrived as the gates were opened at 10:00 am. There were ample opportunities to snap away at animals, judging, rides and people. Our first regrouping was at the woodchop arena and we found plenty of action with chopping, sawing and treefelling events. After a quick lunch, we concentrated on the farmyard animals and dogs. After visiting the MasterChef kitchens we finished the day snapping the thrillseekers in sideshow alley. The day finally ended at 5:00 pm when we found rest in the train home. There will be a delay in posting the sample shots on the Outings section of the website until Cameron returns from leave. Page 5

The judge for the evening was Paul Robinson who was the second judge ever of the Eastern Interclub. Paul made general comments on the entries, which were then presented in the usual audio-visual format, with the large prints displayed across the front of room. The awards and trophies were presented, and then Richard White gave an inspiring talk on his photography and gave many tips that would have helped even the most experienced photographer. He also sold several of his books, which helped towards his travel costs from Mansfield (some 200+ km) to be with us. Many thanks go to Paul and Richard for making the evening a great success. Some of our members had some success along the way also. In the prints section, MPS finished sixth of seven, but only four points off first place. Barry Kearney took out third place with his entry Blue Tongue Lizard and Water Drop. In the EDI section, Sharon Maher was awarded a merit for Rose Scent, with the club finishing fourth of six, and only five points off first. The inaugural B&W EDI section was very well received, with the club finishing fourth of seven, and seven points off first place. Darryl Howman was awarded third place for The Mists of Hanalei, and Stephen Bode a merit for Sunrise Over the Ganges. A huge thank you to all MPS members who helped on the night, whether it was providing supper, getting the room ready, or risking their lives in the dark car park directing our visitors for their safety and directing them to our room. 11 Maroondah Photographic Society A005192C mpsociety.org.au COMPETITION RULES Effective September 2015 AIMS OF COMPETITION: To help members of the club increase their photographic technique and creativity. 1 Monthly competitions 1.1 Nine monthly competitions are held each year. 1.2 The month in which the judging is done is the month of the competition (e.g. the March comp is judged in March, but entries must be submitted in February). 1.3 The themes for monthly competitions are either Open (i.e. no set subject) or Task (i.e. a particular theme such as Typically Melbourne or Water). The details can be found in the Syllabus and on the website. 1.4 The monthly Open or Task competition is split into four sections: a Prints, B-grade members. b Prints, A-grade members. c EDIs, B-grade members. d EDIs, A-grade members. 1.5 In addition, there is a monthly black and white projected image (EDI) competition, which is an open theme, and is open to all members. 1.6 The interpretation of the Task subject is left to the image creator and is judged as part of the creative process. 1.7 Entries must be the original work of the maker, and not photographs of other people's work (e.g. a photograph in a magazine or from the web or internet). 1.8 The Committee may nominate a special competition with specific entry requirements, end-of-year aggregate point allocation and certificate, award or trophy to be presented. Members will be advised of the special conditions at the earliest possible occasion. 1.9 Members are responsible for all "model releases", and that copyright law is not infringed Any image that has won a monthly competition cannot be entered again in the same or any other category in the current year; and that an image converted to black & white shall be considered a different image. 2 Monthly print competition 2.1 Each member may submit up to two entries in each Task or Open print section. 2.2 Prints should be contained within a mount no larger than 40 cm x 50 cm. 2.3 Panoramic prints are acceptable but must be contained within the 40 cm x 50 cm mount size. 2.4 Prints may be photographically or digitally enhanced to improve the final result. 2.5 Prints mounted on chipboard or framed are not acceptable.
