2 What is the film fest? FBISD students will showcase their work using advanced filmmaking techniques Theme: Inspire, Equip, Imagine! The goal is to challenge students to creatively and effectively tell their stories through film while meeting the theme It s the first time FBISD has pitted its broadcasting students against one another and WE WANT TO WIN

3 rules Maximum length of five minutes, including credits Must be created in Must be G rated, appropriate for all ages Must have a release form completed for everyone appearing in the film End credits should identify all writers, directors, cast, crew and music All credits must include the following statement: This film was made possible by the Fort Bend ISD Education Foundation Founder s Grant

4 More rules Teams must submit a contest entry form with each film entry All clips, images, effects, audio, and sound should be the original work of the students, otherwise proper copyright and citation must be provided. There is no limit to the number of movies entered by a student or class, but no more than four awards will be presented per entry

5 What about music? Music You don t have to use music IF you use music, you MUST use creative commons music or original (stuff you ve written and created) music Click here to search for some

More Snapchat stories than you can imagine 1st & 2nd place Trophy, gift card & certificate 3rd place winners Plaque & certificates Grand Prize Winner Macbook, mobile film bag, video camera, tripod, microphones and lighting equipment All winners will be showcased at the awards event at Clements on April 14

8 How are we judged? Overall Does the film follow submission guidelines? Are there any copyrighted materials used without permission? Is any portion of the film in appropriate? Is a video release completed for all parties in the video?

9 How are we judged? Opening BEST: Compelling titles provide motivating content BEST: Hooks the viewer from the start and keeps the audience s attention WORST: Titles don t orient the audience WORST: Sequencing is unclear and boring

10 How are we judged? Audio Editing and Sound Design BEST: Audio is clear and assists in communicating the story BEST: Audio enhances storytelling and adds value to the film WORST: Audio is cut off and inconsistent WORST: Audio is absent or inaudible

11 How are we judged? Video Editing BEST: Shots and seams flow seamlessly BEST: Transitions are used to communicate the main idea WORST: The editing detracts from the telling of the story

12 How are we judged? Story and Originality BEST: Story composition is well-crafted, original and clearly communicates the story BEST: Dialogue and visuals work together to tell the story WORST: Story lacks a plot or believable characters WORST: Story lacks originality, creativity or interest

13 How are we judged? Purpose and Theme BEST: Has a clear purpose BEST: Incorporates unique elements to tell the Inspire, Equip, Imagine story WORST: Entered into the wrong category WORST: Does not include the theme

14 How are we judged? Shot Variety BEST: All shots clearly focused and steady BEST: A variety of shots are used WORST: Shots are blurry and shaky WORST: The same shots are repeatedly used

15 How are we judged? Closing BEST: Credits are accurate, legible and draw attention WORST: Credits are incorrect, misspelled and boring

16 How are we judged? Pacing and Time Limit BEST: Film isn t too short or too long for the content BEST: Five minutes or less WORST: Drags on or goes too fast for the viewer to catch up WORST: More than five minutes

18 Step 1 your idea Decide if you are going to do this with a group or alone Documentary, Narrative, Music video (groups of 2-4) Animation, book trailer (groups of 1-2) Campus challenge (groups of 2-3) Complete this ideation (one per team), title it [last names] festival ideation and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive before EOC on Thursday, February 4, 2016 CHOOSE CAREFULLY. YOU CANNOT CHANGE TOPICS OR CATEGORIES ONCE YOU HAVE SUBMITTED YOUR IDEATION.

19 Step 2 your script With your teams, plan out your video. Remember the following: It must hook viewers from the start It must have a clear story and purpose It must include the Inspire, Equip, Imagine theme Write everything down in a shot sheet (use the template from Mrs. J s website) Title your shot sheet [last names] festival shot sheet and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive at midnight on Wednesday, February 10, 2016

20 Step 3 your opening Design your opening. Remember the following: Compelling titles provide motivating content Hooks the viewer from the start and keeps the audience s attention Don t bore people before you even start Save your Adobe Premiere project as [last names] festival opening. Export an MOV file of just your opening and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive at midnight on Friday, February 12, 2016

21 Step 4 the main part Film your story. Remember the following Good audio enhances storytelling and adds value to the film Good story composition is well-crafted, original and clearly communicates the story Incorporate unique elements to tell the Inspire, Equip, Imagine story Shots and seams should flow seamlessly You use a variety of quality shots Save your Adobe Premiere project as [last names] festival main. Export an MOV file of just your main and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive at midnight on Friday, February

22 Step 5 your closing Design your closing. Remember the following: Good credits are accurate, legible and draw attention Bad credits are incorrect, misspelled and boring Remember everything it has to say (see slide 3) Save your Adobe Premiere project as [last names] festival closing. Export an MOV file of just your closing and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive at midnight on Monday, February 22, 2016

23 Step 6 your paperwork Compile a list of ALL people appearing in your video, using first and last names and grades, if appropriate. Title this document [last names] festival cast and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive by midnight on Tuesday, February 23, Ensure you have media release forms for EACH person appearing in your video, whether a minor or not. Download the form HERE Staple all of your printed, signed forms together and put a sticky note on the top labeled [last names] festival paperwork and deliver to Mrs. J IN PERSON by Tuesday, February 23, 2016

24 Step 7 your semifinal video Create an Adobe Premiere file titled [last names] festival semifinal and import your opening, main and closing projects into it Since you have already completed all three of these it should take only minutes Export an MOV file and submit to Mrs. J by midnight on Wednesday, February 24, 2016.

25 Step 8 critiques and edits We will critique each video in class on Thursday, February 24 and Friday, February 25 Everyone is expected to take notes on the critiques received from Mrs. J and your classmates so that you can incorporate them into your final submission Compile the critique notes and title them [last names] festival critique and submit to Mrs. J via Google Drive by midnight on Monday, February 29, 2016

26 Step 9 final submission In class on Tuesday, March 1 and Wednesday, March 2 you will incorporate the critiques into your final videos The final video should be titled [last names] festival final and submitted to Mrs. J via Google Drive by midnight on Wednesday, March 2, 2016

30 You have a lot of time to complete this assignment. If you are not utilizing your time wisely, by excessive talking, horseplay or getting off task (YouTube, Twitter, etc.), you personally will lose five points on the final video grade for each infraction. On the second infraction, the TEAM will lose five additional points. STAY ON TASK!
