3 Elementary Campus - McFarland, WI Conceptual Development Each wing of the new elementary school building will reflect one of three natural areas of importance in the Village of McFarland - Lake Waubesa, Lake Kegonsa, and the Marsh Woods area. These wings will be connected by hallways that will represent the Yahara River which feeds all the aforementioned lakes. Specials and support spaces between the classroom wings will represent the land between the lakes and the importance of agriculture within McFarland. Materials used throughout the interior of the building will be specifically representative of the ideas each area of the building embodies (i.e. directional tones of blue within the hallways, more tones of blue within the classroom wings, and tones of green and brown within the central core). Materials used throughout the exterior of the building will reflect the industrial qualities of the city, specifically through the use of cream city brick and corrugated metal. Red brick to match the existing Conrad Elvehjem building will be incorporated, as well as metal panel in tones of blue to reflect the colors of the lakes that McFarland prides itself in. 5 Elementary Campus - McFarland, WI Blending the Old and the New Conrad Elvehjem was an important resident of McFarland. The existing elementary school, reflects this in its name. Conrad Elvehjem went to school in Mc- Farland and Stoughton as a young boy and went on to make some significant scientific discoveries in his professional career, giving him quite a prominent presence within McFarland. In the large addition to Conrad Elvehjem, queues from the old building will be brought into the new, specifically the corner window elements as well as the tall piers above the windows. Likewise, materials being used in the new, will also be incorporated into the old, specifically through the incorporation of metal panel. The hope is to create a harmonious, yet fresh building design. Emphasis on McFarland s Waterways & Agricultural Importance The expressive entry to the new school will take inspiration from the lakes of McFarland. The entrance canopy as well as the adjacent trellis for the outdoor reading area will be organic and wave-like in form, integrating translucent material for shading during the summer months. This will juxtapose nicely against the industrial feel of the brick of the building and its orthogonal massing. Prairie grasses will be designed into the landscape along the edge of the building to evoke the importance of agriculture. As visitors enter the building, they will experience a feeling of directionality and flow, as tones of blue will be incorporated into the treatment of the floor to represent the Yahara River, while spaces within the core of the building will incorporate tones of green and brown.
