Carol s award, announced by judge Linda Hollett-Bazouzi, was the climax of the awards ceremony and reception on Sunday, June 11th. Sixteen other JRAL artists received ribbons in four media categories; those winners are named at the left, and their winning paintings can be seen on pages 3 and 4 of this Newsletter. Our thanks to Bill Porch for the wonderful music, and Jean Younkin and all participants for the delicious refreshments! Woman in Grey, Carol Mullen Sixty members displayed their work at this year s show, which runs through July 30. In her remarks, judge Hollett-Bazouzi said, This is an incredible show! All the work is very strong. She indicated that her award decisions were difficult, and she discussed the merits of each painting that received a prize. Linda is a well known Richmond artist and instructor. She taught art in Henrico Public Schools for 35 years; she also has taught adult art classes through Henrico Parks and Recreation and J. Sargent Reynolds Community College, and workshops for Virginia art teachers. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, and is currently Lead Artist for the Virginia Plein Air Painters, and a Docent at VMFA. Fred, Rhonda Edwards A People s Choice award was also announced at the reception, and this year there was a tie! Fred, an oil painting by Rhonda Edwards and At the River, a pastel by Terry Atkinson, were both given this honor by visitors to the exhibit. The Annual Judged Show is the final exhibit of JRAL s calendar. Art League exhibits will begin again in September, with Fall shows scheduled at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, Cedarfield, and Tuckahoe Library. At the River, Terry Atkinson 1

2 Judged Show Reception & Awards Ceremony - June 11, 2017 Second Annual JRAL Summer Paint-In on July 15 Members are looking forward to the Summer Paint-In at For Art s Sake Gallery & Studio, 10 am to 4 pm, on Saturday, July 15th. The sign-up sheet for the event is full, but you can get on the waiting list. If you have already signed up, you will be receiving several confirmation s in the next few weeks. If you signed up but will not be able to attend, please let Carol Baron know! Cancellations will be filled from the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. The Paint-In is a marvelous opportunity for members to work on their latest projects in the company of friends to share ideas, techniques, and insights with each other. Participants are invited to bring some light refreshments, to demonstrate paints, supplies, and gizmos, or to inspire their colleagues with newly discovered applications. 5 Member News Exhibits: Bill Campbell had three paintings accepted into the Bauhaus Prairie Art Gallery Portrait & Self-Portrait online exhibition in June. Awards & Sales: Jan Priddy received an Honorable Mention for Majestic One (seen at right, above), one of two paintings she had accepted into the All-Media Juried Show at Crossroads Art Center in May. Kay Roscoe s painting"digging up the Past" received an Honorable Mention at Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Art's national juried exhibit, Textures and Patterns, in May. Terry Atkinson sold her First UU People s Choice award winning pastel At the River the day of the reception, after posting it on her Facebook page! Suzie Counts sold her watercolor painting of a hibiscus (seen at right, below) from the portfolio bin at For Art s Sake in May. David Cheatham has sold his oil painting Sandpiper on the Run from the current show in the JRAL Gallery at Crossroads. Et Cetera: Congratulations to George Wythe High School senior German Ramirez who has been recognized by JRAL as the Outstanding Art Student at GWHS for His award, which includes a gift card at Plaza Art, was announced by Community Outreach Committee Chair Jane Cox, along with Rosemary McKnight and Connie de Bordenave at the school s annual awards assembly in May. Mary Kent enjoyed a four-day art packed trip to Philadelphia in May with Road Scholar. Highlights included expert-led guided tours of the Barnes Collection, the Rodin Museum, the Philadelphia Art Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine arts, and outdoor public art works. Mary said, It was all wonderful, but I think I have finally OD d on Renoir! Bill Campbell attended attended a watercolor portrait workshop taught by Jane Angelhart in Haymarket in May. Susan Fisher continues to teach beginning and intermediate oil painting, and there are openings in the class which meets on Wednesdays from 11 am to 1 pm. Summer session begins with Wednesday mornings 10 am to noon from July 12 th, and Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 pm, each for 8 weeks. You can call the center at for more details, and visit Linda s website at In Memoriam: We will miss Richmond educator and JRAL member artist Beth Bradford, who died on June 6 after health struggles that lasted many years. Beth joined the Art League in She was an active exhibitor, even during her illness Beth posthumously won third place in Other Media at this month s Annual Judged Show; she had previously won ribbons in 2008 and 2010 (pictured at right). She managed JRAL s Gallery Wall at Crossroads in , and was the Lead Artist for Virginia Plein Air Painters in In a note from Beth s husband, Kenneth, he wrote, Many times she told me about how much she enjoyed painting and working with this group. It was one of her great joys Thank you for being her friends and colleagues, and again, thank you for remembering her and her work. JRAL will be making a donation in Beth s honor to the Richmond SPCA. 5
