1 Laurel Art Guild Highlights May 2014 Carol s Column Dear LAG Artists, Happy Spring! It is a very refreshing change to see the bright yellow greens and vibrant colors of flowers and blossoms everywhere as well as to experience the warmer temperatures (at least some of the time)! We are currently anticipating several events, all of which you can read about in the newsletter. This Saturday is the Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea, and the Arts to be held on the MAC grounds from 10am-4pm. As usual, LAG will have a presence at this event, and we hope that as many LAG members as possible will participate or stop by to visit. The event itself is very family friendly, and is a good place to bring children for an afternoon of entertainment and fun, creative activities. Contact president@laurelartguild.org for more information. Hanging beginning this week is the annual LAG Small Works Show. It can be viewed in the hallway lobby of the MAC Arts Barn. May 10 is the outdoor vendor show on Main Street in Laurel. LAG will be participating for the first time in this event, and we are excited about the possibilities of connection with the community and of sales. Please contact Diane Shipley DShipley3@comcast.net for more information. The other upcoming exhibits are listed in Diane s column on page 2. Exciting workshops are planned. Please see information in this newsletter and contact Donna Aldridge to express ideas or interest ( ). Please be alert to our membership meeting on Monday, May 12. David Lawton will be our guest speaker (see information below) and will demo for us the dynamic combination of pastel over watercolor. Also at this meeting, LAG members will meet our two scholarship candidates for this year. Please include this event on your calendar. The slate of officers for the new term will be voted on. Note that a ballot is included on page 7 of this newsletter. Please cast your votes regarding our slate of officers. Ballots can be returned before the May 12 meeting. Our annual New Members Potluck will take place on Saturday, June 7 at 12 noon. Please add this one to your calendar also. LAG welcomes all our new members and we look forward to seeing our members new and old at these upcoming events! Mercedes Lawrence is our contact person for this event. Be alert for her invitation. David Lawton, Fine Artist Laurel Art Guild Members Meeting Monday, May 12, :30pm Montpelier Arts Center Main Gallery David Lawton is currently the president of the Maryland Society of Portrait Painters and a past president of the Maryland Pastel Society. He has studied here and abroad, with the most notable being the Art Students League in New York. In addition he has had the opportunity to study with some of today s finest artist such as Cedric Egeli and Albert Handell. David divides his time between Oils and Pastels knowing that each has its own unique attributes. David currently teaches at AACC focusing on pastel and plein air painting. David strives to see the beauty in the most simplistic of subjects and thus he tries to capture the essence of his subject in as direct and straightforward manner as possible. Knowing what to eliminate is as important to David as what he chooses to include in his paintings. David will be demonstrating a technique of pastel over watercolor for the Laurel Art Guild.
