1 Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild President s Message: Happy May! At the time of this writing, I have been camping for 8 months in our 26-foot camp trailer while our new house is being built. We are nearing the finish line we have been told we can move stuff into the house but not live there so, of course, I have been busy lugging in all my fabric, sewing materials, craft stuff and equipment. I am ashamed to say how big the pile is.. needless to say, there will be no shortage of items to buy at the Guild Quilt Show Quilt Market in October. Meanwhile, I have had the opportunity to watch my house being built on a daily basis. I have found the similarity between house construction and quilting fascinating. Both my contractor and I work with plans and then make changes based on need or craftsmanship. We both deconstruct when we aren t happy with something. We both have to REALLY think about using materials wisely and cutting them just the right way. Probably the biggest similarity is the satisfaction we both have when we finish a task. The ability to imagine and create is part of what makes us human. When we do not create, we are less of ourselves. It doesn t matter if you are a beginner or a master. Making and creating fills a need in our souls. If you are just learning, come to guild meetings, take classes, or come to sit and sew you are guaranteed to learn something new! The same goes for those of us who have been at it awhile. We have some great opportunities coming up at our May meeting and with our special June Continued on page 2 Registration: 9:30 am Where: Next Meeting - May 21, 2016 Meeting: 10:00 to 12:00 noon Christ the King Lutheran Church, Goldendale 104 E Simcoe Drive, Goldendale, WA Drive to the back of the church to park and enter the meeting room Program: Eddie Walker Trunk Show and Lecture How to use a wedge ruler and/or the angles on your regular ruler for creativity in designing. Thanks, Barb Frasier, Vice President, President s Letter Continued from Page 1 class. When it comes to creating and sewing, Nike has it right JUST DO IT! Happy Quilting Sewing, Beyond the Block Gorge Art Quilters Kim Vogel, President P.S. Those of you who are working on UFO s had better be sewing. Now that I have a sewing room again, I plan to knock out TONS of them. (I have to get that pile down..) BTB members met April 29th at the Hood River Library. We revealed our "Buildings" Challenge quilts and hung them in the downstairs meeting room for display. They will be on exhibit for the month of May. We encourage all CRGQG members to come and see our Art Quilts. The variety among 10 quilts that are all 14" X 42" is amazing. Our next challenge is entitled "Zip It!" We are giving ourselves several months to produce an art quilt which includes at least one zipper or a portion of a zipper in the design. The possibilities are endless! Once again the variety will be remarkable. We will meet again at 2:30 on Monday June 13th at the Hood River Fire Station following the Sit and Sew. Elizabeth Garber will be making a presentation. If you are interested in "Beyond the Block" please come join us that day. This subgroup of CRGQG meets monthly and emphasizes creativity. At each meeting we discuss artist development, use of social media, learn techniques by watching demos by group members, share ideas and bring projects for show and tell and for constructive input from the group. This group is open to all CRGQG members. Please contact Kay Skov for meeting times and locations. kkskov@gmail.com, (541)

Start Saving for Quilt Market The Quilt Market at our Quilt Show has become a very successful part of our budget the last two years. As you spring/summer clean your sewing space, start saving the items you no longer want or need for donation to the CRGQG Quilt Market. The quilt market will accept anything sewing or quilting related: Fabric (what was I thinking?), books and patterns (seriously, did I really think I d make that?) are very desirable items. We also like magazines and various notions (do I really need 14 pairs of scissors???) Please, no white elephant items not related to sewing. New this Year: You may start bringing these items at the May meeting and give them to either Gayle or Barbara so we can start sorting and pricing. If you want to donate between guild meetings, please contact us and we ll arrange drop-off or pick-up. Consignment Items We will also be accepting consignment items that you have made potholders, quilts, placemats, table runners, pincushions, etc. Gayle Jacobson gayle97058@gmail.com Barbara Frasier barb7130@gmail.com Quilt Market Co-Chairs We Love our Facebook Page! This past year, Nancy Howard has continued to keep our Facebook page current, fun and informative with lots of great pictures, updates about upcoming events and recaps on what we ve done. Join us!! Barb Frasier and Gayle Jacobson Sewing a precise 1/4 seam is the most important tool a quilter can have. To save time and avoid frustration be sure you are always sewing accurate 1/4 seams. While many machines come with specialty 1/4 feet, these also need to be tried and tested to be sure they are accurate. To test your seam allowance sew and then measuring the width of the seam with an acrylic ruler. Some machines allow the needle to be moved to the right or the left, and often it s possible to make an adjustment by simply moving the needle. David Martin, Lloyd Frasier, Wayne Jacobson Page 5
