1 Columbia River Gorge Quilters Guild President s Message: Happy New Year! If you are like me, you have made your resolutions and already fallen off the wagon. I made it 24 hours without my signature Diet Pepsi. I really am a better person with a bit of caffeine. Quilting Wise, I am off to a good start! I have resolved to empty the RTQ (ready to quilt) box. One down; a bunch to go. Thank you, Cindy Needham!!!! My other resolution is to help support local quilters more. My first job is to locate all the small quilting groups in our area. I already know about sewing groups in Dufur, Cascade Locks, White Salmon, and Hood River. These are GREAT places for quilters to meet neighbors and form friendships. I hope to feature these groups in our newsletters and on our websites. To start: I d like to give a shout out to the quilters at Spirit of Grace Church in Hood River. These wonderful ladies meet first and third Wednesdays from 9-12 pm and make quilts for the Lutheran Aid Society. Last year, this small group made 138 quilts to be sent wherever the need was greatest. They would love to have new members contact Ruth Miller at or just drop by the church when they are there. Make a resolution this year to sew with friends. It s way more fun and you will always learn something new. We will be listing meeting times and dates on our website on the Calendar of Events page. Happy Sewing! Kim Vogel, President Next Meeting - February 17, 2018 Registration: 9:30 am Where: Meeting: 10:00 to 12:00 noon Hood River Valley Christian Church Presenter: Patricia Belyea 975 Indian Creek Road, Hood River Program: Enter the Alluring World of Japanese Yukata Quilts Pay Your Dues Now! Join Patricia Belyea as she tells stories about visiting Japan for the International Great Quilt Show. As a passionate importer of vintage Japanese yukata cottons, Patricia explains the elaborate process of hand-dyeing the high-quality cottons and describes yukatas role in Japanese society. She shows samples of the different patterns and repeat styles. From classic indigo and white to vivid color combinations, Patricia presents a wild range of the wonderful fabrics. Patricia displays her quilts made with yukata cottons and talks about how those fabrics inspired each quilt composition. The meeting also includes a mini trunk show of vintage yukata cottons vibrant, hand-dyed fabrics that Patricia imports from Japan. Her website: Afternoon Workshop: 1-4 p.m. The Art of Facings Try out a new style of binding with the End Cap Facing. This modern way of finishing a quilt, with no binding showing on the front, is fast, easy and open to all sorts of design details. Once you learn to face a quilt, you might never go back to double fold French bindings. You will learn four different facing techniques in this hands-on class! Class is $35, see page 2 for registration information.
