1 Marys River Quilt Guild Newsletter January 26 Quiling with Rulers on a Domestic Machine The quilting world was turned upside down when, in 1989, the American Quilter s Society (AQS) Best of Show was awarded to a machine quilted quilt. Ever since then, the skill of long-arm quilters has been growing and machine quilting is now recognized as an art form in its own right. As new technologies and techniques have been developed, long-arm quilters are now able to produce perfectly smooth lines and balanced designs. But how can a domestic machine quilter match the quality of the long arm artist? With rulers! Manufacturers are swiftly developing the tools we need for our domestic machines and the results are taking the domestic quilting world to new heights. Our program in January will feature Carmen Steggell and Theresa Valentine, two MRQG members who have embarked on the learning curve for free motion quilting using rulers. Their presentation will feature the tools and techniques necessary for this new technique as well as closeup looks at their beautiful results. Please join us on January 26 for this informative presentation and inspiring technique. February 23 Journey of Two Technique Junkies % Guild members, Judy Peterson, mother, and Angelia Peterson, daughter, have been teaming up on their artwork for many years. The two of them push each other to explore new techniques and the result is impressive art work. % Angelia uses the camera s shutter to capture a moment in time with her appreciation of nature. She then takes those captured moments and expresses what she has interpreted in her art quilts. Judy enjoys playing with light, shadow and the colors of the landscape. She takes her visions and pulls together stunning landscapes in her quilts using beautiful fabrics and threads. She has also created spectacular thread painted animals. % Judy and Angelia, two technique junkies, will be sharing how they seek out the topics for their quilts and develop their concepts by pushing themselves. Their combination of strengths blend seamlessly making a perfect creative pair. Come and be inspired to view your world differently after attending this program. Mary s River Quilt Guild Our mission To contribute to the knowledge of quilting and the textile arts. To promote the appreciation of fine quilts and quilt making. To contribute to the growth and knowledge of the art and the industry through educational meetings and fellowship Officers President - Barbara Gordon Vice-President - Judy Juntunen Secretary -Lisa Ulmer/ Treasurer -Ann Geyer Meeting Location Begins at 7:00 pm, 2nd floor in Moorland auditorium at the Benton County Historical Museum, 1101 Main St. Philomath Web site guild blog - marysriverquiltguild.blogspot.com! 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE! Happy New Year to everyone! I hope we've all had a pleasant, relaxing and/or exciting and productive holiday season.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Guild has an interesting and perhaps challenging year ahead, and one of the big events will be Quilt County. I hope everyone will be able to participate.! Although I'd planned to spend most of the holiday season in my sewing room finishing quilts, I first tried to find one in particular that had shuffled to the bottom of the pile... and soon discovered that a break was needed in order to better organize the room and the storage areas. As it turns out, this is an activity that I think I'll repeat more often and the New Year might just be the most appropriate time for it. It never hurts to go through a stash of fabrics, notions and supplies, rediscovering and reorganizing older acquisitions, deciding what can be donated and what might be used in future projects. So although I finished very little other than a few lavender sachets for last minute gifts, the room is now ready for me to get back to work.! I'll be hosting a Quilt County show at the Ark Animal Hospital here in Philomath so invite anyone to contribute quilts with an animal theme. The wall space in the lobby at the facility is appropriate for small art quilts and since I live in a house with seven cats, many being clients at the Ark, I'm now working on a quilt that will prominently feature cats. And if you might not have quilts appropriate for this particular display, I hope you'll participate in one of the other exhibits in Quilt County.! I am still learning what is involved in fulfilling the duties of President of this Guild and welcome any assistance and suggestions. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to contact me directly. And thanks to everyone for all the help and support I received during the past year.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Barbara Gordon 2017 Membership Dues are due % Membership dues can be paid at our January meeting. Our new treasurer Ann Geyer will be at a back table to take your money and issue you a membership card. Print out the membership form from the website ( uploads/3/4/5/8/ /membership_form_2016_update1.pdf) and bring it filled out to save some time waiting in line.! PAGE 2
3 LIBRARY NEWS New this year Quilt with Tula and Angela: A Start-to-Finish Guide to Piecing and Quilting using Color and Shape, by Tula Pink and Angela Walters: Modern quilts, lots of color and many suggestions for quilting the quilts. 17 quilts patterns. DVD: Ruler Work for the Sit-down quilter, by Patsy Thompson: beginner's guide to performing ruler-guided free motion quilting on a domestic machine.! For all our new members and those not familiar with the guild library, all of our books are listed on our website by author and title and with key search words (this last is in progress). There is also a book cart at the meeting with all of the most current books and many more. Members can check out books for a two month period. During the year we typically add around 18 new books with a mix of techniques to suit everyone. New books are usually new releases so we keep current with up to date techniques and ideas. If you have any book or DVD suggestions please call or Karen Gottschlich mrqglibrary@gmail.com or Please be sure to include your name on any request, so that I can get the new item to you first. Karen G. Round Robin Group shares their quilts at November meeting.! PAGE 3
4 Blocks of the Month - Up in the Air! The January block is called Castles in the Sky, thus thou art encouraged to add something magical to your castle like a dragon or a princess waving for help. Remember your youthful days laying in the grass and imagining what the clouds looked like and make up a story for today then run to your machine and make a block.! When you go to the guild website (as you should on a regular basis), and look at upcoming blocks to be made, note that the simpler the block the greater the opportunity to let your imagination run wild as you are challenged to embellish your work. Hope you have fun this coming year. Sharon Fries January - Castles in the Sky Secret Sisters! Secret Sisters will be starting our new year with 14 participants. The first meeting will be on January 19 at Jan Andrews-McKirdie's house. Due to being snowed/ iced out for our December meeting this will be a combination reveal of last year's Secret Sisters, and a receiving of our 2017 new Secret Sisters.!!!!! Wendi Bracken February - Entwined Star See website for directions. As we begin to imagine a new year and look forward to wonderful possibilities, it is our hope that you will find time during the next eleven months to give the guild blocks of the month a try. Many are simple and whimsical, probably because I like simple and most of the quilts that I make are for children which seemingly (obviously) influenced the block choices. Having noted that some are simple let us add a caveat to this simplicity. Benton Hospice Service Veterans Project As veterans enter hospice services they are honored by having a beautiful patriotic wall hanging in their room. These wall hangings are made by guild members and donated through the Service Committee. The hangings can be any size. Cathy Griffin made the wall hanging shown here.! PAGE 4
5 Quilt County Venues Needing Quilts Marys River Quilt Guild enthusiastically voted to continue with Quilt County and several members stepped forward and said that they are willing to coordinate shows for the event this coming Fall. In order for the event to be a success and those shows to happen, we need members to help by sharing their quilts in the different venues. Many of the quilt shows need quilts and with this winter weather, it is a great to work on completing your projects or starting a new one. This list is currently those that are looking for quilts for their themed displays. 1) Let s All Read a Book quilts that are inspired by books, author s or theme or do you have a quilt that you can say works with a book, ie Hawaiian quilt; book Hawaii. Let Theresa Valentine or Debbie Garvin know if you have a quilt for their show. 2) Challenge Quilts we have seen many gorgeous challenge quilts over the years please consider sharing one, two or more of the challenge quilts you still have. Let Judy Juntunen know you have quilts to share. 3) Member of Fitness Over Fifty Priscilla Newberger will be coordinating the show there let her know. 4) Pet/Animal small wallhangings. Barbara Gordon is coordinating a show of quilts based on this subject. 5) Quilting Makes the Quilt Carmen Steggell is coordinating this quilt show and could use some quilts that have impressive quilting. 6) Bursts - small quilts to go with the theme Sweets and a Movie - Naomi Widner is putting this display together. There are a few more shows out there that will need your quilts, so watch for announcements and please let those coordinating the various shows that you will have some available. Quilt County is such an amazing event and the guild always receives positive feedback from the community.!! Marcia Gilson Service Committee! Happy New Year to everyone! Service committee wishes to thank again all those who helped us dig into our backlog of quilt tops and get them out into the community.! The service committee logged a record 987 hours this year as we decided to meet every week instead of twice a month. Thirty three members of the guild chimed in with 439 additional hours which is more than double the total from last year. I believe that this is partially because of the Benton Hospice Service Veterans project and also due to many more of you taking quilts to quilt and bind. This helped us to complete a total of 107 quilts (which more than doubles our total of 49 from 2015)! We donated quilts to ABC House, Benton Furniture Share, Cancer Resource Center, Corvallis Manor, Habitat for Humanity, Oak Creek Youth Correctional Facility, Pastega House Expansion, Philomath Baby Bank, Regency Park Place, Room at the Inn, Uzghorod Orphanage, Old Mill Center, Partners Place and three quilts to auctions/fundraisers.! Those who attended the November meeting heard the speakers tell of the impact that those quilts have made in their organizations. Thank you to all those who signed up at that meeting to help us again this year, and please consider signing up when the opportunity arises at the next couple of meetings. Lynn Grube! PAGE 5
