Materials list Fabric for the background of the quilt - 42'' x 42'' Fabric for the background of the sphere ¾ yard (42" wide) Different colored fabric scraps for 22 flowers; I used 22 different colors; use as many colors as you like; for the largest flowers (in the center) you need about 8'' x 12''; for the smallest flowers you need scraps about 5" square Fabric for the middle of the flowers (I used the same fabric used for the quilt background)- 11''x18'' Batting - 44'' x 44'' Backing fabric 44'' x 44'' Binding: one pieced strip 2½'' wide and about 170'' long scraps of different colors or 1/3 yard if you use just one fabric. All the fabrics used in my quilt are from the FUSIONS line by Robert Kaufman. 2. The color of the flowers Arrange the colored fabric for the flowers in a pleasing combination, following this scheme: 4 fabrics on the first row, 5 fabrics on the second row and so on (a total of 22 fabrics). For this purpose, you could cut out a small piece (a 2" square works fine) from each of the colored fabric you want to use. I used fat quarters and I folded them. NOTE For the center flowers more fabric is needed than for the outside flowers. You might want to use your favorite fabrics for the center flowers. 3. Preparing the pattern Print out the full size pattern (15 pages). From this pattern you will cut out templates for the English paper piecing technique. Use your favorite paper for this technique. I used the same paper I use for my regular printing. Tape the pages together. To easily tape one page to another, remove the right margin of the first page (cut on the dashed line) and tape the first page to the second page, and so on

The center row is labeled with "A" letter. The right half is labeled from B to I and the left half is labeled from J to R. The sphere will be assembled in vertical rows.

3 3 across the row. Use a similar method to tape the rows together. Notice the way the templates are labeled. The individual templates are numbered from top to bottom and I used the same letter for all the templates in a vertical row. The pattern is divided into two halves. The center row is labeled with "A" letter. The right half is labeled from B to I and the left half is labeled from J to R. The sphere will be assembled in vertical rows. The arrows indicate the top edge of each piece. 4. Preparing the templates Cut out the templates from the large sphere. First, cut out the vertical rows then cut out the individual templates. For me, it was easier and faster to cut with a small rotary cutter (and a cutting mat) than with scissors. On some templates there is a dashed line (it is the line used for taping the pages of the pattern together). Pay attention not to cut on that line. Keep the templates arranged in stacks by letters. For each template+piece of fabric you will need a sticker labeled with the letter and the number of each piece. I used price tags. You need 199 stickers labeled as follow: A1 to A15 B1 to B14 C1 to C15 D1 to D14 E1 to E13 F1 to F12 G1 to G11 H1 to H8 I1 to I5 J1 to J14 K1 to K15 L1 to L14 M1 to M13 N1 to N12 O1 to O11 P1 to P8 R1 to R5 Set them aside for later. To identify the flowers/the fabric for the flowers, write another 22 stickers labeled FL1 (Flower1) to FL22 (Flower22). Adhere the stickers to the corresponded fabrics. Now you have to select and keep in different stacks the templates needed for each flower, center of the flowers and background of the sphere.

4 Start with the flowers. An example: for flower #6 (FL6), select the templates D4, D5, E3, E5, F3, F4. Place them on the fabric you want to use for Flower #6.

Pay attention to this step, it is very important. You could ask someone to help you verify that you selected the correct templates for each flower. With a rotary cutter, cut pieces of fabric, leaving about ½'' seam allowances (for very small pieces, leave ¼'' seam allowances). Baste the fabric to the paper pieces, using a contrasting thread. Here are the front and the back of the pieces. Baste all the pieces for flowers, center of the flowers and background of the sphere. Then gently press them, without steam. After pressing, attach the corresponding label to the front side of each piece. Place it near the top edge, indicated by the arrow on the back. Because the pieces will be assembled in vertical rows, it is very handy to know which edge is the top edge (you will know the orientation of each piece).

Assemble the sphere The easiest way to assemble the sphere is in vertical rows. The center row is A.

7 7 Here are all the pieces: basted, pressed and labeled and ready to be sewn together. Keep them in order in stacks arranged by letters. You will have 17 stacks/ 17 rows to assemble. 6. Assemble the sphere The easiest way to assemble the sphere is in vertical rows. The center row is A. To the left of A row, arrange the rows B, C and I. These rows form the left half of the sphere. To the right of A row, arrange the rows J, K, L and R. These rows form the right half of the sphere.

8 But first, you have to verify that all your pieces are accurate. The easiest way is to lay all the pieces on the floor.

The bottom edge of a piece must be equal with the top edge of the next piece. Then add the pieces of the other rows.

If one piece is wrong, it won't fit in the corresponding place. If something is wrong, first check if the piece has the correct label.

8 8 But first, you have to verify that all your pieces are accurate. The easiest way is to lay all the pieces on the floor. Start with the center vertical row. Arrange the pieces from A1 to A15. The bottom edge of a piece must be equal with the top edge of the next piece. Then add the pieces of the other rows. Here is the center row and the left half of the sphere. Here is the complete sphere. It is easy to see if all the pieces are accurate. If one piece is wrong, it won't fit in the corresponding place. If something is wrong, first check if the piece has the correct label. If the label is correct, you must verify if the template is correctly cut. Print the page that contains that template again and recheck the size/shape. The color of the piece will also help you to find out where the mistake is.

9 9 Start assembling the pieces in rows. Then piece two rows together and so on until you complete the sphere. Remove the labels from the front of the sphere and give it a gentle press. Do not remove the paper templates or the basting stitching.

10 7. Appliqué the sphere onto the background fabric Fold the background fabric in half horizontally and finger-press the fold.

Keep the center vertical row of sphere vertically aligned. Using a matching thread, stitch down the edge of the sphere.

Use the following settings: - #2 for the width of the stitch - #3 for the length of the stitch.

10 10 7. Appliqué the sphere onto the background fabric Fold the background fabric in half horizontally and finger-press the fold. Fold in half vertically and finger-press again. Carefully place the sphere on the center of the background fabric. Keep the center vertical row of sphere vertically aligned. Using a matching thread, stitch down the edge of the sphere. Do not use wide and short stitches, you will have difficulties later in removing the paper templates. Use the following settings: - #2 for the width of the stitch - #3 for the length of the stitch. Stitch all the way around the sphere, attaching it to the background fabric. Carefully remove the excess fabric from the back, leaving ¼'' seam allowance. Here is the back. Now remove the basting stitches and pull out the paper templates. If necessary, use tweezers to remove the tiny paper pieces left in the stitching (on the edge of the sphere).

11 11 8. Quilting and finishing the quilt Here is the top. Give it a final press then prepare the quilt sandwich with the backing on the bottom (wrong side up), batting in the middle and quilt top on top. Baste and quilt as desired. Wash the quilt and let it dry. Square up the quilt, trimming 4'' away from the sphere. Then bind the quilt. NOTE Print the pattern on page #12 if you want to color the sphere in different ways. The piece A8 is the center of the sphere. Pay attention that these are the templates (you place them on the back of the fabric). The front of the quilt will be the reverse of your color way (the image vertically flipped). You can also use this pattern to enlarge it (in case you need a sphere larger than 30'' in diameter).
