XXy asdf asdfy XXX Star Blazer PLANNER COVER BY SARAH THOMAS OF SARIDITTY Thank you for downloading this pattern for your Quilter s Planner. Sarah originally developed her Star Blazer Mini for Modern Quilts Unlimited Issue #8. For this pattern, you will need basic knowledge of foundation paper piecing. Please share your finished covers on social media using #StarBlazerPattern and #QuiltersPlanner. Enjoy! DIFFICULTY LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com
Before You Begin To avoid shrinkage in case you need to launder your cover, it is recommended you pre-wash your fabrics. All measurements are written as WIDTH x HEIGHT. Have a solid comprehension of Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP). Seam allowances are ¼" throughout unless noted otherwise. Press seams open on the Center Star Block unless noted otherwise. Press the FPP seams to one side. Cut the Center Star Block pieces precisely to the specified ⅛" mark on your ruler. Trust me. Read through the entire pattern before beginning. I know you probably won t...but try! Materials Background Fabric ½ yard Twelve Star Fabrics twelve Fat Eighths OR twelve scraps at least 2½" x 2" Interior Body Fat Quarter Interior Flaps Fat Quarter Angled Interior Pocket Fat Eighth or large scraps Pellon 987F Fusible Fleece (or similar single-sided fusible fleece) 20" x 0½" Pellon 805 Wonder-Under (or similar thin, paper-backed double fusible web) ½ yard Pellon SF0 / Shape-Flex (or similar single-sided woven fusible interfacing) 3" x 6" Sew-In Hook & Loop Tape (⅜" or ½" wide) ½" (up to 2") length Optional Add-Ons Small Interior Pocket 4½" x 7" or scraps Lightweight Clear Vinyl 3" x 4½" Elastic Ribbon 4" Tools The usual suspects: cutting mat, quilter s ruler, rotary cutter, scissors, iron Thread - Sarah suggests Aurifil 50wt for crisp seams and less bulk. Check out the SARIELLA collection! Clover Wonder Clips and/or Straight Pins Turning Tool, i.e. Purple Thang, chopstick, bamboo wand Optional Add-A-Quarter Ruler Light Box for FPP - Sarah suggests Daylight Company Wafer or Wafer 2. Use code Sariditty8 for 20% OFF at Permanent Fabric Glue (if making bookmark from ribbon) Fabric Marking Pen Print Print pages 9-3 for the foundation paper piecing portion of this pattern and the templates for the Flap and Angled Interior Pocket. Be sure to set your printer to 00% and use the included " square to test for accuracy. Center Star Block Cutting Requirements PIECE # PIECES SIZE a, l 2 each 3½" x ¾" b, k 2 each 3½" x ⅜" c, j 2 each 3½" x ⅜" d, i each 2" x ⅝" e, h each 2" x ⅜" f, g each 2" x ⅝" FROM BACKGROUND FABRIC: Cut four squares: 3½" x 3½" Subcut once on the diagonal to create eight triangles Cut four squares: 3⅛" x 3⅛" Bookmark Material (ribbon, twill tape, etc.) 4" 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 2
e d c b i g h f E a l k j F Center Star Block a b c d e f g h i j k l A a l k j B b i c e d d f b C l D j h h g f Assembly Assemble each strip square as shown. 3½" 3½" 3½" 3½" }½" }⅞" }⅛" }⅛" }⅞" }½" Cut each square into a triangle as shown. Keep the notated portions and toss the others into your scrap bin. Piece together the two center strip sections and press well. The center strips (pieces e & h) will measure exactly ⅞". 2" d e f g h i }⅜" }⅞" }⅜" }⅜" }⅞" }⅜" The overall width of the strips needs to be trimmed down to 3⅛" by the following method: Measure to verify that the center strip is exactly ⅞" wide. Using a quilter s ruler, align the ⅛" markings over the seam joining pieces h & i and cut off the excess. (Refer to the diagram below.) ⅛" ⅛" Toss Toss Keep Keep Repeat with the j-k-l sections. Be sure to cut your triangles along the diagonal radiating from the. 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 3
Repeat over the seam joining pieces g & h. The finished strip will measure 2" x 3⅛". Repeat for the matching strip section with pieces d-e-f. Ensure the short ends of the strip sections are aligned and straight. Trim as minimally as possible to square up if necessary. TIP: It helps to focus only on one end of the strip for this step. Let s work with the right-hand sides first. Using your quilter s ruler and the Star Blazer diagram on page 3, you are now going to cut 45-degree angles on the right-hand ends first. Refer to the diagram below for cutting the right-hand ends. Align the origin of the 45-degree angle in the corners where the is located. Adding Background Fabric Piece the 3½" star triangles to their corresponding 3½" background triangles as shown to create half-square triangle (HST) units. Press and trim each of these four block segments down to 3⅛" x 3⅛" using the diagonal seam and a quilter s ruler to keep the block in alignment. Piece together the top two HST units and the bottom two HST units. This is the absolute center of your cover and will be wrapped around the spiral binding of your Quilter s Planner. *Trim each to 3⅛" x 3⅛" first. 3½" HST* 3½" HST* 3⅛" square 3⅛" square Keep Toss Toss 3½" HST* 3½" HST* 3½" HST* 3½" HST* Keep From the right-hand points of pieces d & i, measure over ¾" and mark the point. Using a quilter s ruler, cut a 45-degree angle as shown. Toss Toss ¾" Keep Keep ¾" d i 3⅛" square 3⅛" square 3½" HST* 3½" HST* *Trim each to 3⅛" x 3⅛" first. Finish the top strip and bottom strip by sewing a 3⅛" background fabric square in each corner. These finished strips will measure " x 3⅛". For the two center strips, piece the background triangles by aligning the points with the outermost points (from fabric pieces d & i). Press open. Do not trim off the dog ear tab from the background fabric. This will help with aligning the sections to piece together on the next step. Finishing Each strip should measure " x 3⅛". To ensure alignment, use the background fabric dog ear tabs as reference points to match the two center strip sections. Press. Piece the top strip and press seam toward star center. Repeat with bottom strip and press toward star center. 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 4
The finished Center Star Block measures " x ". Set aside. Cut a piece of Wonder-Under and SF0 for the joined Flap sections both about ¼" smaller than the joined sections. Set aside the Wonder-Under piece. Fuse the SF0 to the wrong side of the Flap Lining Assembly. Refer to the image below. Next, finger press the piece in half to mark the center of the curve. Take the loop (soft) side of the ½"-2" long piece of hook & loop tape and center it over the finger pressed crease ½" in from the curved fabric edge on the right side of the fabric. Stitch in place. Place the Lining and Exterior Flap sections RST, and stitch from one corner around the curve to the other corner leaving the straight edge open. Snip notches into the seam allowance around the curve every ½" to allow for turning and smoothing flat. TIP: Be careful not to snip too close to the stitching line. Foundation Paper Piecing Piece together the provided patterns A, B, C, D, E, and F. Join A to B, C to D, and E to F. Sew the A/B section and E/F section to the center star block using the diagram on page 3 as a reference for placement. TIP: Use the center seam of A/B and E/F to align with the center seams of the star block. Press and trim the finished Exterior Panel to 2" x ". Set aside. Half Circle Flap Assembly Cut out the Flap Template and lay over C/D section as shown. TIP: I suggest marking the curve with a fabric pen then cutting to avoid shifting the template. For the Flap Extension, cut 6" x ¾" from the exterior background fabric. Sew RST along the straight 6" edge. Press. Set aside. From the interior flap fabric, cut the following: one Flap Lining using the Flap Template piece and one 6" x ¾" Flap Extension piece. Sew RST along the straight 6" edge. Press. Set aside. C D Fuse the Wonder-Under to the wrong side of the Flap Exterior piece. Remove the paper backing and turn the flap right side out. Using a turning tool, smooth the seam then press with the iron. The Wonder-Under will activate and fuse to the Flap Lining piece, so be certain your flap is exactly how you want it. Optional Adding the Elastic Pen Loop Finger press the Flap piece in half to mark the center of the straight edge. Cut a 2" length from the elastic ribbon. Fold the elastic in half lengthwise and determine the size of the loop should be for your preferred writing utensil and mark where the stitch line will be. Align the marking over the Flap Lining piece on top of where the ¼" seam line will be. Sew a scant ¼" basting line over the straight edge to hold in place. Sew scant ¼" basting stitch } Loop Imaginary ¼" line from edge 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 5
Interior Assembly Interior Panel Prepare the Interior Panel by cutting a piece of fabric measuring 2" x ". Set aside. TIP: Get creative and piece together strips or other scraps to make a fun interior panel if you prefer. Interior Planner Flaps You will need the following for the two Interior Flap pieces: Two fabric pieces measuring 2½" x " each Two Wonder-Under pieces measuring 6" x 0½" Interior Flap Angled Interior Pocket Interior Panel Interior Flap Press both fabric pieces in half wrong sides together (WST) yielding two 6¼" x " sandwich pieces. Open the pressed sandwich, and center one piece of Wonder-Under inside against the fold leaving the three open edges with a slight frame of fabric showing. Press the sandwich closed. Repeat with the second folded sandwich. Angled Interior Pocket Using the Angled Interior Pocket template, cut one piece of fabric right side up and one piece wrong side up. Place fabric pieces RST, and stitch along the top diagonal and short side. Carefully snip the corner to remove bulk. Cut one piece of Wonder-Under slightly smaller than the Angled Interior Pocket template. Lay the Wonder-Under over the corresponding shape of fabric (wrong side still facing out). Press, remove paper backing, and turn angled pocket right side out. Use the turning tool to smooth seams and corner well, and press pocket piece together. Topstitch a scant ¼" seam along the diagonal and short side. Optional Left-hand Interior Panel Add-Ons BUSINESS CARD POCKET Cut a piece of vinyl 4¼" x 2¾". Center the vinyl over the Interior Flap piece " down from the top edge. Topstitch with a scant ¼"seam. TIP: Lengthen your straight stitch to 3mm to prevent the seam from perforating the vinyl. You may find it easier to sew if you use your walking foot and/ or lay a piece of tissue paper over the top of the vinyl to prevent sticking. Tear away tissue after sewing. If you have a non-stick foot, this is a good time to use it. Business Card Business Card Pocket Pocket Small Small Pocket SMALL POCKET OVER ANGLED INTERIOR POCKET Cut one piece of fabric measuring 4¼" x 6¾". Fold the short ends ¼" in toward the wrong side and press. Fold over another ¼", press, and clip in place. Topstitch a scant ¼" seam on each end. Fold in half RST aligning the finished edges at the top. Press. Sew a scant ¼" seam along both sides. Cut a piece of Wonder-Under slightly smaller than the sandwich piece (roughly 3⅝" x 2⅝"). Press on the pocket half (wrong side still facing you). Remove paper backing, and snip both pocket bottom corners to reduce bulk. Turn right side out, and smooth seams and corners with the turning tool. Press well, which will activate the Wonder-Under. TIP: If the fusible isn t close enough to the pocket top and didn t fuse shut to your preference, you can topstitch over the seam line now. Center the Small Pocket over the Angled Interior Pocket piece ½" ¾" up from the bottom edge. Pin and topstitch the sides and bottom in place with a scant ¼" seam. 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 6
Finishing Left-hand Interior Panel Optional Right-hand Interior Panel Add-Ons Layer the finished Angled Interior Pocket piece over the Interior Flap (see image above), and clip in place ensure the fold is on the right and raw edges are on the left. Topstitch a scant ¼" seam along the right-hand edge of the layered flap segment overlapping the topstitch already sewn on the angled pocket piece side. Lay the Flap/Angled pocket section over the left-hand side of the Interior Panel and sew a scant ¼" seam along the left edge. Finishing Right-hand Interior Panel Topstitch a scant ¼" seam along the left-hand edge of the Interior Flap piece - ensure the fold is on the left and raw edge is on the right. Lay the Flap section over the right-hand side of the Interior Panel and sew a scant ¼" seam along the right edge. ELASTIC PAGE HOLDER Take the remaining 2" piece of elastic ribbon and lay the center over the Interior Flap piece 2½" - 2¾" in from the right-hand edge. Topstitch a scant ¼" seam over the top and bottom edges of the interior flap to hold the elastic in place. Snip the overhanging ends of the elastic. RIBBON BOOKMARK Finish the bottom end of the ribbon as preferred. Sarah s method is as follows: turn the bottom up WST ¼" and adhere with permanent fabric glue. Finger press. Turn the bottom up another ¼" and adhere with glue. Finger press until dry, then press well with iron to ensure it is in place. Lay the top end of the ribbon over the interior flap piece with ½" overhanging the top and " of space between the flap fold and edge of ribbon. See the image to the right. } " Ribbon Bookmark Elastic Page Holder } 2½" - 2¾" Planner Cover Assembly Gather the finished sections: pieced Exterior Panel, Pieced Flap, and Interior Panel. Align the Pieced Flap section with the Exterior Panel using the horizontal seams for proper placement. Pin in place temporarily. See image below. Next, take the hook (scratchy) side of the hook & loop and position it over the center seam of the A/B paper pieced segment with the left edge about 2½" - 2¾" in from the right-hand edge. Sew around the perimeter to attach in place. 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 7
Fold the Ribbon Bookmark (optional) into the center of the Interior Panel and out of the way. Ensure the Exterior Panel is right side up. Flip it over horizontally and lay it RST over the Interior Panel matching all four corners. Clip/pin in place. Sew around the perimeter from to leaving the flap area open. Unpin and set the Pieced Flap section aside from your sandwich. Cut a piece of fusible fleece and a piece of Wonder- Under, both a scant 20½" x 0½". Press the fusible fleece to the wrong side of the Exterior Panel and the Wonder-Under to the wrong side of the Interior Panel. Peel off the paper backing and snip the four corners of the sandwich to reduce bulk. Carefully turn the cover right side out and use the turning tool to smooth and square the corners and seams. Press well all over leaving a " area by the flap opening unpressed to aid with positioning and attaching the flap. Planner Cover Finishing Hurray! You ve made it to the final step to finish your new Quilter s Planner Star Blazer Cover! Position the Flap section in the unstitched & unpressed opening between the Exterior Cover and Interior Panel. Align its center seam with the center seam of the E/F paper pieced segment. Press and pin in place. Ensure the elastic pen loop on the other side is positioned properly. Topstitch a scant ¼" seam along the entire opening. Now slip the front and back of your Planner in the flaps, grab your favorite marking pens, and start organizing your new year! 208 The Quilter's Planner QuiltersPlanner.com 8
