Throw size measurements are listed first, with twin (tw) and queen (qn) sizes in parenthesis. Choose fabrics with an all-over print for Fabrics 1 and 2. Before beginning, print the following paper piecing patterns: Print 20 (tw: 54) (qn: 72) sheets of the Block 1 template page. Print 20 (tw: 54) (qn: 72) sheets of the Block 1r template page. Print 10 (tw: 18) (qn: 24) sheets of the Block 2 template page. Print 10 (tw: 18) (qn: 24) sheets of the Block 2r template page. Trim each paper template to a bit larger than the ¼ seam allowance (notched line). Construct Block 1 and 1r. 1. Begin with the printed side of one foundation paper piecing template for Block 1 with printed-side up. 2. Place a 4¼ L x 8¼ W Fabric 1 patch, on the back of your template with the wrong side of the fabric against the plain side of the paper. Hold the template and fabric up to a light source, such as a window during daylight hours, or a convenient table lamp. Cover the A1 triangle on the template, 2013 KSIN Luxembourg ll, S.ar.l. 4 along with ¼ seam allowances and a bit extra on all three sides. Pin in place. 3. With paper/fabric unit back up to a light source, position a 2 ¾ L x 8 ¼ W Fabric 3 patch on top of Fabric 1. With right sides together, line up fabrics along the ¼ edge and a bit extra to cover for seam allowances, across the seam edge and sides. Pin in place. 4. With printed side up, sew through seam allowances and on of the template paper. 5. Lay unit on cutting mat with printed side up. Gently fold the unsewn portion of the paper back onto itself along seam and finger press. While still folded, line up ruler and trim excess fabric to ¼ seam allowance. 6. Unfold paper and lay paper side to ironing board, then press fabric 3 away from fabric As you did in steps 3-5, position a 2¼ L x 4¼ W Fabric 1 patch on top of Fabric 3 (position A2). Sew together along, trim seam allowances to ¼, and press Fabric 1 away from Fabric Lay completed unit on cutting mat with printed side of template facing up. Trim the sides of your block to marked ¼ notched line. Make 10 (tw: 18) (qn: 24) of each orientation (Block 1 and Block 1r) for a total of 20 (tw: 36) (qn: 48) blocks. 9. Using these same steps, construct a block in the same sequence using Fabric 1 (4¼ L x 8¼ W), Fabric 4 (2¾ L x 8¼ W), and Fabric 2 (2 ¼ L x 4 ¼ W). Make 20 (tw: 54) (qn: 72) of each orientation (Block 1 and 1r) for a total of 40 (tw: 108) (qn: 144) blocks. 10. Lastly, use these same steps to construct a block in the same order using Fabric 2 (4¼ L x 8¼ W), Fabric 3 (2¾ L x 8¼ W), and Fabric 1 (2¼ L x 4¼ W). Make 10 (tw: 36 (qn: 48) of each orientation (Block 1 and 1r) for a total of 20 (tw: 72) (qn: 96) blocks. Construct Block 2 and 2r. 1. Construct Block 2 using Fabric 1 (4¼ L x 8¼ W) in position A1, and Fabric 2 (4¼ L x 8¼ W) in position A2. Make 10 (tw: 36) (qn: 48). 2. 5 Quilt Top Assembly 1. Referring to the Quilt Top Assembly Diagrams, lay your blocks out on a flat surface. 2. Begin by sewing blocks together into rows and then sew rows together to finish your quilt top. 3. Gently remove foundation paper from the back of your quilt top. Use tweezers to pull out any small, lingering pieces of paper. Finishing Your Quilt 1. Piece together your backing lengths along selvage edges. 2. Layer, and then baste your top, batting, and backing together to create a quilt sandwich. 3. Quilt your sandwiched quilt as desired. 4. When finished quilting, sew 1/8 inside the top edge of your quilt. 5. Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim batting and backing to the size of your quilt top. 6. Piece your Fabric 5 strips (2¼ ) into one long strip. Bind your quilt using the French double-fold method of binding. 7. Congratulations! Your quilt is finished!
