Guild Meeting: 2nd Monday of the month (Sept June) 7 PM, Garden Road Elementary School President s Message Dear Quilters, Our September meeting was very special for me as we were able to see and greet so many of you after our summer break. It was great to see people laughing, smiling and sharing all that has gone on during the summer. So if summer is almost officially over it is time to let fall into our lives. If you have not thought about the autumnal colors now is the time to start. The first one to come to mind is orange and shades of rust, an array of golden hues, the browning of the greens and let us not forget one of my favorites, the purples to include burgundy and burnt red. Having grown up in the Midwest, fall is the most vibrant seasons and as quilters we should take time to rejoice playing with these colors. To me it does not make any difference what you choose to make with them. A simple log cabin design can burst with all these color opportunities. Speaking of opportunities our Ruby Jewels opportunity quilt did well at the San Diego Quilt Show and I want to thank all who came to support quilting in our area along with some very talented members who had quilts on display. In October we are pleased to have Cat Williams as our guest speaker. She is a Judy Niemeyer credentialed teacher. If you re not familiar with Judy s designs, go to Quiltworx.com and plan to be inspired. She is one of the major artists in the realm of foundation (paper) piecing. In my book she definitely has kicked it up a notch or two. Making one of her quilts is on my 2015 to do list. It may rollover onto the 2016 list but it is still there. So much happened at our first meeting. We are starting another year of the UFO Challenge along with three or four special projects. We have a retreat over Halloween at Vina de Lestonnac in Temecula and may have a few openings. Also the first weekend in October we will be planting the seeds of future quilters at the Old Poway Park event. Be sure and check out more information on this in the newsletter. October Birthdays be sure and bring a Door Prize to share. It is your turn and only a quilter knows what another quilter might love. Buy some fabric, sew a few seams and we will see you next month, Suzy WE NEED YOUR HELP It is greatly appreciated if you can stay after the guild meeting ends to help tidy up. This includes helping complete putting away folding chairs, tables, picking up leftover items, and just overall basic clean-up. Please considering staying to help us, this is something that if everyone pitched it, it would be done in a jiffy, and not causing anyone to be left behind with it all. THANK YOU!

3 Philanthropy Welcome back everyone. Many of you were busy this summer helping Philanthropy by making placemats and finishing quilts. We now have 16 quilts made since June that are ready for donation and 53 placemats that were brought in Monday night. Thanks to everyone for your contributions and for supporting Philanthropy by donating money for our Loot Locker fabric packets. We earned $37.00 which will help to buy more batting and plastic bags for our kits. If you would like to get placemat kits during this month to bring to the October meeting, please contact me at and we can make arrangements to do so. We need to have lots more Christmas placemats for Meals-on-Wheels to deliver by mid to late November. We are planning a Sew-a-thon on November 11. So mark your calendar. We will have solid times and location for you by the October meeting. Thanks again for your support. Charleen and Ruth Page 3 Programs Hello, Members! Our October workshop is with Cat Wilson, a certified Judy Niemeyer instructor. This is paper piecing that is easy and very do-able! If you like paper piecing, you will like this technique. And, if you have never tried it, or are afraid of it, come learn an easy and foolproof method for success! I still have places in our October workshop. Please let me know immediately if you are interested in attending. Thanks! Collette Opportunity of the Month Thank you to all the members who supported the Guild by buying tickets for the Opportunity of the Month drawing. Leah and I greatly appreciate your comments and your support. And thank you to the members who contribute items to our cause to be added to a future drawing. It makes for bigger baskets so there is more to win. The winners for September were all of the members of the guild because we again raised over $100 for the month. The drawing winners were Collette, Barb Tritchies (sp) and Lee Mary. On another note, Leah and I are also doing the Door Prize drawing. Please remember that after you check in, come to see us and take a door prize ticket. Put your name on the back of the ticket and drop it in the can. At the end of the meeting, a name or names will be drawn for the month's door prizes. See you next month at the October meeting. Ed and Leah Estrin
4 Page 4 UFO Challenge Here are the rules for the UFO Challenge. 1. Choose four items that you want to finish between now and June. 2. Fill in the form and pay $ There are no ongoing deadlines for when they are due as long as it is before June. You will receive an entry with your name on it for the prize drawings and a button for your flower pin for each entry you complete. If this is the first time you have participated in the UFO Challenge, you will receive a flower pin when you pay your fee.
5 Page 5 Budget Recipe Corner Please send my your recipe and you may see it posted here! Special Projects More Special Projects Colleen and I thought we would also do a few small projects that can be completed in a short time period. The first will be a holiday potholder exchange at the December potluck meeting. The minimum size of the potholder is 7 x7 or larger. You can make as many potholders as you wish and you will go home with a new potholder for each one you make. Don t forget to use multiple layers of Warm and Natural batting, or Insul-Brite. If you put in free potholder patterns on the internet, you will find hundreds of cute patterns. There is no charge for the small projects as the prize is taking home a project if you made one. Thank you, Candy Mittag LIBBY'S PUMPKIN CRANBERRY BREAD Yields - 12 slices per loaf 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 3 cups granulated sugar 1 can (15 oz.)
