2 Hello Quilters, In traveling through cyber space, I stumbled across several amazing stories about an amazing QUILTED ROOM! Contemporary designer Gloria Vanderbilt Cooper, now age 85, had a gilded lush history being the great, great granddaughter of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the famous and wealthy Commodore, who owned shipping and railroad empires! Gloria had a passion for clever and creative artistic expressions and in the sixties she decorated, or over decorated, (beauty is in the eye of the beholder), an entire Master Bedroom covering every inch in patchwork quilts including the floor! The photos here show you some of the amazing results. The room is essentially an outgrowth of Gloria s work as a painter and collage maker! She stated that each touch suggested, almost demanded, what should be done next. It is a busy look for sure, some say what what makes it work, is mostly linear shapes in the quilts, a reliance of a predominant color (red), and lots of white woodwork and molding to break up the business of the competing quilt patterns. The mosaic effect of the walls and ceiling is the result of using two dozen, beautifully figured, handmade American quilts, Amazing! This is the bedroom of Mrs. Gloria Vanderbilt Wyatt Emory Cooper, the painter, and also Mother to Journalist/Reporter, Anderson Cooper. This well photographed bedroom has been featured in Vogue and Harpers Bazaar magazines, and is obviously a slice of American PIE! The project began by quilt layering the inside moldings on the walls. Next came the ceiling with same patchwork quilt treatment and that was enamel coated. Selecting the floor presented the most difficult problem, rugs didn t seem to work, and it was first thought to simply whitewash the floors, One day during construction Gloria noticed scraps of quilts and fabric on the floor and was inspired Layers and layers of varnish covered the new amazing quilted floor! It is simply amazing. Collage and Patchwork Design is so related with the abandonment of boundaries. What a delight to have viewed these photos and to stumble across this wild and wonderful decorating and creative inspiration. I hope you enjoy it as well. Piecefully, Doreen Johan 2013 President 2

7 Library News Everything Old is New Again With the exception of art quilts that feature free form shapes, almost all pieced quilts antique and modern are based on basic geometric shapes. From basic squares and triangles to circles, hexagons, and five -pointed stars, the profusion of designs made possible by an infinite number of ways to combine basic shapes have delighted us for centuries on mosaic floor tiles, in stained glass windows, and, of course, in quilts. This month we are featuring something old in our library collection and something new, but as you will see, everything old is new again. Back in the mid 1970s when Jinny Beyer s book was published, only the cleverest quilters knew how to design the quilt blocks they admired in the size they wanted to use. Jinny taught herself how to draft patterns, and this book teaches quilters and designers, even those with rudimentary geometry skills. It is a reference book I turn to again and again when I want a block in a particular size. If you have never tried drafting your own patterns, I urge you to borrow this book and see how easy it can be. Although Kathy Doughty s book is brand new, her pieced blocks are really just traditional blocks made new through her bold combination of fabrics and border designs. Kathy owns a successful quilt shop in Australia called Material Obsession. Her blog posts are among my favorites because the teachers in her shop generate wonderfully whimsical and unconventional designs marked by equally unconventional combinations of fabrics and colors. You will find both pieced designs and appliqués in Making Quilts. Coming up next year Mary and Marion have been updating the library book list to reflect new additions. Next year we hope to be able to add a Subject Index to help members find books on topics of interest. We have some terrific titles and excellent books that have gone unnoticed; we hope the Subject Index will bring them to your attention. Meanwhile, stop by the library table and see what we re featuring. Happy Quilting Mary and Marion 7

10 Raffle Ticket Chairman We are still looking for a 2014 Raffle Ticket Chairperson. In 2012, the raffle included a second quilt and the American Girl Doll. Is anyone considering donating a second raffle quilt for 2014? The American Girl Doll was a very successful fundraiser not only in tickets sold but with clothes in the Boutique. The American Girl Doll was also successful in bringing new people to the Quilt Show. My niece came to the Quilt Show just to see the American Girl Doll and fell in love with several of the quilts and has started sewing with her mom. Is anyone willing to coordinate an American Girl Doll with clothes for the 2014 Raffle? Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Sara Lawrick QUILT SHOW 2014 NEEDS YOU!
