Spring has Sprung Spring has Sprung as the saying goes.

It felt great to take all those boxes of no longer needed items to my favourite thrift shop so someone else might make use of them. The bonus, of course, was extra space in the closets and drawers.

I am always on the lookout for ideas when I stroll through the neighbourhood walking my pups. Last but certainly not least, was the attack on my sewing room.

I have used up some of this stuff! Sound familiar? Like so many of you, I REALLY TRY to do this BUT then the next quilt show with its merchant mall comes along and all my good intentions dissolve.

Since our March weather was a bit cold and wet, it seemed like a good time to get into some old-fashioned spring cleaning and decluttering, not always fun to do but feels so good when it s done! It felt great to take all those boxes of no longer needed items to my favourite thrift shop so someone else might make use of them. The bonus, of course, was extra space in the closets and drawers. President s Message My greatest love in the spring is getting outside to play in the dirt. Tidy gardens filled with flowering bulbs always gives me a lift. Every time I do a major clean-up in there, I discover all kinds of forgotten treasures patterns, fabric, trim, beads, you know the kind of things I mean and promise myself that I won t buy more until I have used up some of this stuff! Sound familiar? Like so many of you, I REALLY TRY to do this BUT then the next quilt show with its merchant mall comes along and all my good intentions dissolve. I honestly tried not to get into any trouble at the Tradex show after selling tickets for two hours, but the temptation was too great. The perfect fabric for the apron my daughter wants, a stunning quilt kit that I can t wait to start, a couple of new notions found their way into my bag. I ve already tucked some spending money away for our own show in May. Maybe I ll run into some of you searching the merchant mall for more quilting treasurers. The Adeline Harris Tumbling Block with Signatures quilt stands up to any of them for its uniqueness, artistry and unparalleled capture the history and society of mid-19 th century America. Community Quilts FAQ s Where does the stuff come from? Our annual budget covers the cost of batting, wide backing, glue, tape, printing of guild labels, etc.

5 Community Quilts FAQ s Where does the stuff come from? Our annual budget covers the cost of batting, wide backing, glue, tape, printing of guild labels, etc. We have a constant supply of donations of fabric from members and from donors who contact us through the website. All donations are sorted and the 100% cotton is retained. Any other type of fabric is forwarded to either the guild, free table or local thrift shops. Where does it all go? We donate to non-profit organizations mainly in the Langley area. Our current list includes: Ishtar House, Gateway of Hope, Langley Lodge, Jackman Manor, Victim Services (at R.C.M.P.), Brookside Care Home Surrey, Langley Seniors Daycare, Meals on Wheels, B.C. Air Ambulance and Best Babies of Langley. We respond to calls for quilts for fires and floods where ever they are needed, such as, Calgary Floods, Fort Mac Fires and the Japanese Tsunami. The transport of these are usually sponsored by Quilt shops and Guilds at the site of the need. How can you help? Our team make up packaged kits for quilt tops, these are available at all guild meetings. Hand in the finished top, at your convenience and our team will layer and package the quilt and provide fabric for binding and a quilt label, which is then ready for pick up. The packages are sized for either long-arm or domestic sewing machine which ever your choice. Some members donate finished quilt tops and if you prefer to quilt them yourself, we will put your name on the package and it will find it s way back to you. What are the sizes? Only the small quilts for the Air Ambulance are a definite size which is 24 inches square. The reason for this is the quilt is used by the Helicopter crew over the newborn basinet during the flight, to protect the little passenger from the bright lights and given to the tiny patient at the end of the trip. The basinet is 24 x 24. The quilt should be Cotton or flannelette with no embellishments. It makes a great little baby care seat quilt! We do not make kits for these, or members donate their own amazing little wonders! All the other quilts can be approximate. 40 x 40 for wheelchair quilts for senior residents; Single and double bed size for Ishtar and Gateway; Youth and couch size 54 x 54, for Victim services. Best Babies quilts 36 x 40ish, with no embellishments. Placemats approx. 17 x 15 for Meals on Wheels. We collect these each fall and deliver them in time for Christmas. The Community quilt team meet on the first Wednesday of the month, in the Annex behind the Shepherd of the Valley Church at 20l69 72 nd Avenue, Langley, where we prepare the kits and layer quilts. Members who wish to layer and spray their own quilts are welcome to stop by between 10 and 2pm. Please park at the north end of the lot. Visit our table at all the meetings. Questions welcome. This Month s Choice: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand Submitted by: Joey Wood #342 While I like to read historical fiction, I don t usually read biographies, but I highly recommend this one. When I bought this book I did not realize it was a true story. It is about Louis Zamperini who was an Olympic contender just before World War II. He joins the airforce, gets shot own and eventually ends up a prisoner of war. The story covers his life from a young lad, through the war, and his adjustment to post-war life.
