1 Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 6, May 26, 2017 The Guild With Heart The next meeting will be on Monday, June 12, :00 P.M. at Messiah Lutheran Church (in the gym) in Mauldin, South Carolina. From the President: Thanks to all our Veterans who have given us the freedom to pursue the love of quilting. Thanks also to all our members who support our Quilts of Valor projects. Your love and dedication is amazing. Have you stepped outside of your comfort zone this year to learn a new quilting technique? If so, please bring your projects to show and share to inspire others to also step outside of their comfort zones. I get so comfortable doing what I love to do that it is sometimes hard for me to try a new project. But this year I have loved the new projects that I have started and learned so much from our speakers. From the Vice-President I hope you are all excited to welcome our next NATIONAL Quilter, Diane Knott. Diane will be speaking and presenting her beautiful scrappy quilts at our June Meeting. We will be having a workshop on Tuesday, June 13 at Messiah Lutheran on Diane s Quilt Spring Cleaning. The cost for the class will be $30. We have room for 7 more students. The pattern for the quilt is available on Diane s website for you to download for $8 or you may purchase it from her for $9. Diane will also be bringing copies of her book, Scrap Quilt Secrets. Each year my mom and I collect pillowcases to give to the children at Shriner s Hospital in Greenville. This year in June and July we will be taking up pillowcases from anyone who would like to donate one. Fun children s fabrics, and teenager fabrics are always wonderful as are any that are donated. Thank you for your generosity in helping us give these children something special. Hope that you all have a safe and memorable Memorial Day. Happy Quilting, Shelia Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Officers 2017 President Shelia Chandler Vice-President Susan Perham Secretary Pat Ruff Treasurer Patty Stonitsch Newsletter Editor Ruth Bartholomew Webmaster Gloria Taliaferro In July we will be having our Salad and Ice Cream Social. August is planned to be our yard sale! Begin cleaning your sewing rooms! I personally found 3 of the same 6 ½ square rulers last night while looking for something else! I put one in my for sale pile. We are going to rent table space to members. This will be a fundraiser for both you and the guild! In September, The Going Batty Speaker, Teresa Coolidge is tentatively rescheduled. Wow! That is a lot! You guys better get busy!!! Hugs and stitches! Susan

2 2017 Quilt Show Quilting Makes a Home Thanks to Debbie Fenton, Gloria Taliaferro, Becky Schwartz, Helen Hinkle, Yvonne Stiefel and Ruth Bartholomew for working so hard at the last workday. We are looking for help with Advertising, Boutique, Silent Auction, and YLI Thread Sales. Call Pat Hubbard at On Saturday during the Quilt Show we will be wrapping several veterans with Quilts of Valor. Fat Quarter Basket We have the basket (there are three to choose from) and we currently have 62 fat quarters of fabric. The goal is to have 100 or more fat quarters in the basket. Patterns that are fat quarter friendly may also be donated to be included in the basket. Fat quarters will be collected at each guild meeting. If you are able to donate a fat quarter of fabric it is appreciated! Thank you to members who have already donated fabric. Tickets will be $1 each or 6 for $5 for a chance to win all the fat quarters and the basket. In September, the basket will be on display at the guild meeting and members will have an opportunity to purchase tickets in advance, rather than wait until quilt show weekend. I will keep you posted as to the number of fat quarters in the basket as they are donated. --Yvonne Stiefel Quilt Show Chairperson Challenge The theme of the 2017 Aunt Het Quilt Show is Quilting makes a Home. Evelyn Kellogg has created an inspiring Opportunity Quilt that embodies the theme. Home has special meaning to each of us. My challenge to you is to put your idea of Home into a quilt. You may reach back to your past, you may look to your immediate family or your circle of friends, your religious community, our country or even our world. Pick an image that says Home to you. Size should be no smaller than 12 inches and as large as you like. The quilts will be presented at the September meeting. Refer questions to: Pat Hubbard Treasurer s Report Ending balance from May $ I will be out of town for the June meeting, so there is not a treasurer s report. Patty Stonitsch, Treasurer - HOSPITALITY Refreshments for June will be provided by Debbie Fenton, Pat Ruff, Margaret Seel, and Pam Nugent. Thank you, ladies, for volunteering. At the Hospitality Table, there will be an opportunity to sign up to bring refreshments for upcoming meetings this year. Thank you to those of you who have already signed up. July will be our ice cream social. Please sign up to bring a salad, ice cream or ice cream toppings. It promises to be a lot of fun. I think everyone who came to the May meeting remembered their name tags. Good job! Be sure to wear them next month so everyone can greet by name and to have a chance at a gift. Please remember that the funds raised by the dollar door prize help to offset the rental of our meeting space. Kathy Butler will be substituting for me at the June meeting. Please give her a warm reception and thank her for stepping up while I m on vacation. Jean Andersen Hospitality Chairman 2

3 May Meeting Minutes The May meeting of the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild was called to order by President Shelia Chandler. The April minutes were approved with corrections as printed in the newsletter with Adabelle Rychtarik making the motion and Eleanor Ziegler seconding the motion. Members approved the motion by unanimous vote. There was no old business. Vice-President, Susan Perham, said that the Hawaiian block workshop was fantastic. In June, we will have Diane Knott as our speaker. She is an extraordinary scrap quilter. She will have a workshop the Tuesday after our meeting called Spring Cleaning. The cost is $30. You will need to bring a pile of fabric scraps. A pattern will need to be purchased or it can be downloaded from her website. In July, we will have our Ice Cream social. Please bring ice cream, toppings or a salad. There will also be a yard sale. Pat Hubbard, as quilt show chairman, reminded us of a workshop to make items for the Silent Auction. It will be on Saturday, May 20th in the Joy Center at the church. It will be from 9 to 3. You will need to bring a zipper foot, sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. There are kits available to make at home for Boutique items. Margaret Seel made up a small quilt from material given by Tammy Schoelen. A Halloween wall hanging was also made. Pat Hubbard has also compiled a directory. Let her know if you want a printed copy. Evelyn Kellogg, the Opportunity Quilt and Block of the Month chairman, reminded us to pick up tickets to sell. She has encouraged us to sell, sell, sell the tickets!! Kathy Butler won the May Block of the Month. The block for June will be a bow-tie block. The material for the tie part should be something a man would likesuch as hunting, sports, computers, etc. Debbie Miller has some newer books for the library and they will be available next month. Ken Hinkle, will be taking over for Quilts of Valor as Suzanne DiCarlo is moving to Texas. He shared information about 5 upcoming QOV presentations. One on May 28th is for a 103-year-old WWII veteran. On Thursday, June 1st there will be the 2nd quarterly dinner for QOV at the Brazilian restaurant from 5 to 9. A portion of the proceeds goes to QOV. There will also be a Basket Raffle with a value of $400. See Helen Hinkle for tickets and information. Becky Schwartz gave an update on Habitat for Humanity. There will be a dedication on June 1st. The Dad is a veteran so he will receive a QOV. There will be a 2nd dedication on June 11th. Mona Turner asked those taking part in the Round Robin to pass on their pizza boxes to the next person. Guild sales chairman, Debbie Fenton, still has some of the 25 year pins available for $5.00. She has also requested that each of us consider entering multiple quilts in different categories for our quilt show. The entry forms are on our website. Jean Andersen, of Hospitality, thanked those who brought refreshments. The name tag winner was Pam Nugent and the Dollar Door Prize was won by Gloria Taliaferro. Our Webmaster, Gloria Taliaferro, said that we had 720 visits per day to our web site and 21, 619 hits per month. The finished blocks from "Be My Neighbor" were shared as well as the blocks for June. Our Quilt Show page has leads to an electronic entry form as well as one to print. Eight members participated in Show and Share. We had a break for refreshments. For our program, we had a Vendors Night. Viking Sew and Quilt and the Longarm Network both shared information about their shops. We spent the remainder of the time shopping at their tables. Respectfully submitted, Pat Ruff Secretary Be My Neighbor Blocks for June If you made the June Blocks, bring them to the meeting to show to our guild. The assigned Be My Neighbor blocks for June 2017 are Blocks 9, 10 & 11. A link to patterns, as well as a suggested schedule for completing the blocks, can be found on our website at You can begin making your blocks at any time. We would like to see your completed quilt at our September meeting. It would be great if you entered it into our Quilt Show in October. Bring your completed blocks for that month to the meeting. We d love to see them! 3

5 June Birthdays Happy Birthday Friends! 13 Joyce Greer 15 Jaylyn Rollins Patty Stonitch 16 Adabelle Rychtarik 17 - Susan Perham 20 Margaret Seel If you have a June birthday and it is not listed here, I apologize for the omission. RB ROUND ROBIN - PICK A THEME I hope you all are having fun working on your block! Remember to bring the pizza box you have, to exchange it at the next meeting. If you cannot be at the meeting, try to send the box with someone or contact the person you would give the box to. Thanks, Mona If you have any questions, please contact Mona Turner at Book Review The Quilter s Kitchen By Darlene Zimmerman and Joy Hoffman EZ International, pages *If you enjoy quilting and cooking you will enjoy the projects and recipes in this paperback book. At the beginning of the book there is a tool tutorial for how to use The Companion Angle and The Easy Angle for cutting out the triangle units/pieces needed in the different quilt projects. There is a very helpful chart for cutting strips to make your triangle units in different sizes. Quilt projects are not identified as beginner, intermediate, or advanced. If you can use the rulers to make your units, it is up to you to sew with an accurate quarter inch seam for accurate sized blocks. The directions are clearly explained for each project with good step by step diagrams of how to make each block and then put them together for the finished quilt project. There are arrows to indicate which way to press seams as you construct the block units. The quilt projects range from small wall hanging size to bed quilt size. (twin or full no king size quilts) There are directions for seventeen different quilts. The quilt projects are listed as you would find categories in a cookbook: appetizers, beverages, salads, main dishes, desserts, and garnishes. (The garnishes section explains how to make an apron.) There are eight recipes for each of the above named categories except for garnishes. There are no recipes for garnishes. This is a book that has been on my bookshelf for several years and I wanted to take another look to see what quilts and recipes were included. It is available from as a used book for $3.48 with free shipping. By Yvonne Stiefel Quilts of Valor. On May 29th we will be awarding Quilts to 9 members of the Simpsonville police department who are either veterans or currently serving. Thank you for all you do. --Helen Hinkle For more information about Quilts of Valor check out There are free patterns available as well as information how to nominate a veteran for a quilt. 5
