Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Newsletter Volume 30, Issue 4, March 31, 2017 The Guild With Heart From the Vice-President The next meeting will be on Monday, April 10, :00 P.M. at Messiah Lutheran Church (in the gym) in Mauldin, South Carolina. From the President: Hello, everyone. I hope that you have enjoyed the few days of beautiful weather that we have had here in the upstate along with hoping that you did not get any of the awful hail storm that came through. As we move into April it is hard to believe that we are in our fourth month of the year. Amazing how quickly time passes. I m excited with the participation in the guild events this year. I am working on my round robin and something special for my secret sister. Participating in these guild events help you get to know our membership better. We have a wonderful lecture planned for the meeting and a workshop on Tuesday with Hawaiian applique. What a wonderful way to expand or improve on our applique techniques. I hope to see each of you there. Happy Quilting, Sheila Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild Officers for 2017 President Shelia Chandler Vice-President Susan Perham Secretary Pat Ruff Treasurer Patty Stonitsch Newsletter Editor Ruth Bartholomew Webmaster Gloria Taliaferro Quilters!! I am so excited to have Virginia Shrenker coming to our guild on Monday April 10 th to share her lovely applique with us! I am more excited to take a workshop with her on Tuesday the 11 th! Virginia is an amazing artist and a patient teacher. I hope you took a moment at the last meeting to look at her beautiful work. Her needle turn technique is wonderful and she can teach us all! Needle turn does not take up a lot of room in a busy bag so you always have something to grab and go for moments when you wish you had something! We have plenty of room in the workshop on the 11 th. We will begin at 10 and end around 4. If you are interested, the cost is $25. The supply list is very simple and I will be happy to share it with you. Please give me a call if you are interested. (Susan Perham ) In May we are planning a Vendor Night. If you know of any vendors you would like to suggest that I invite, please let me know as I would love to include as many as possible. Also in April, we will be selecting which workshop we want to take in June with Diane Knott. Please take a minute to look at her website and let me know which workshops you are interested in. She will be bringing a trunk show and her books! Hi

2017 Quilt Show Quilting Makes a Home 1) Quilt Show Chairpersons Needed To get an early start on Quilt Show issues your help is needed to fill the following Chairs: Boutique, Silent Auction, Advertising, Publicity and Vendors. Contact: Pat Hubbard ) Fat Quarter Basket There will be a Fat Quarter Basket at the quilt show. Tickets will be $1 each or 6 tickets for $5 for a chance to win all of the fat quarters in the basket. Fat quarters of fabric will be collected at each guild meeting from April to August. In September, the basket will be on display at the guild meeting and members will have an opportunity to purchase tickets in advance, rather than wait until quilt show weekend. I will begin looking for a basket this month. If anyone has a suggestion of where to find a large and/or unusual basket for the fat quarters please let me know. Thank you in advance for your contribution of fat quarters for this project. If each member brings one fat quarter that would be wonderful! I will keep you posted as to the number of fat quarters in the basket as they are donated.---yvonne Stiefel Quilt Show Chairperson Challenge The theme of the 2017 Aunt Het Quilt Show is Quilting makes a Home. Evelyn Kellogg has created an inspiring Opportunity Quilt that embodies the theme. Home has special meaning to each of us. My challenge to you is to put your idea of Home into a quilt. You may reach back to your past, you may look to your immediate family or your circle of friends, your religious community, our country or even our world. Pick an image that says Home to you. Size should be no smaller than 12 inches and as large as you like. The quilts will be presented at the September meeting. Refer questions to: Pat Hubbard Treasurer s Report Beginning balance Income Dollar Door Prize Library 2.00 Membership programs opportunity quilt interest.07 total income Expenses Programs total expenses Ending Balance $ Patty Stonitsch, Treasurer - HOSPITALITY Refreshments for April will be provided by Pat Hubbard, Julie Wood, Kathy Butler and Margaret Seel At the Hospitality Table there will be an opportunity to sign up to bring refreshments for upcoming meetings this year. Thank you to those of you who have already signed up. There will also be a signup sheet available for any member who would like to make a small item(s) for the Dollar Door prize. It will be fun to see what charming creations you will come up with. Thank you to Yvonne Stiefel for providing March s door prize. April s door prize has been donated by Debbie Miller. Please remember that the funds raised by the dollar door prize help to offset the rental of our meeting space. Jean Andersen Hospitality Chairman 2

March Meeting Minutes The March meeting of the Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild was called to order by President Shelia Chandler. The February minutes were approved as printed in the newsletter with Susan Perham making the motion and Pam Nugent seconding the motion. Information about "Be My Neighbor" was also given. There are free patterns from Moda. Her goal is to have the members participating to do 3 blocks a month in order to have a quilt ready for the quilt show. Jean Anderson of Hospitality, thanked those who brought refreshments. She introduced our guests and new members.the Name Tag winner was Joyce Bohan and the Dollar Door Prize winner was Rose Pelfrey. Susan Perham let us know that on April 11th there would be a hand applique class from 10:00 to 4:00.The class will be the Tuesday after our April meeting. The cost for the class is $ You may choose the pattern of your choice. Becky Schwartz gave an update on Habitat for Humanity. She shared pictures from a recent presentation. The quilts were loved by all. The Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild was nominated for Volunteer of the Year. Keep sharing your talents!! Mona Turner and the 8 members participating shared their Round Robin Pizza Boxes with the theme each had chosen. Each month they will meet together to pass their boxes on to the next member. Evelyn Kellogg, the Opportunity Quilt chairman, had tickets with pictures available. The agency that we will share our proceeds with will be The Alpha-1 Foundation. Debbie Fenton, of guild sales, still has some calendars available. She also has 25 year pins. Debbie Miller reminds all that she has quilt books available for check out. Pat Hubbard, our membership chair stated that we now have 52 members. As Quilt Show Chairman, she reminded us of a Saturday workshop to make items for the Silent Auction. The workshop would be held in the Joy Center at the church from 10 to 4. Suzanne DiCarlo of Quilts of Valor, said that Ken Hinkle had awarded 3 QOV quilts to Veterans plus 2 more that would be awarded on Tuesday. They are grateful for any help. Eight members participated in Show and Share. We had a break for refreshments. Anna Maria Horner presented a program on her personal quilting journey of designing fabric and making quilts. Respectfully submitted, Pat Ruff Secretary SECRET SISTERS Our Secret Sisters group drew names at our March 2017 meeting and we are ready to begin sharing with each other. Sisters, remember to share something with your Secret Sister at the April meeting. Let s try to keep this simple with something that says I m thinking of you. Hopefully, you can use the information you received at the March meeting for ideas of what your Secret Sister likes. There will be an area set aside for you to drop off your gift or card for your Secret Sister. Don t forget to pick up something left for you. OPPORTUNITY QUILT Partial proceeds from the Opportunity Quilt 2017 ticket sales will be going to Alpha-1 Foundation. Evelyn Kellogg has the quilt and tickets available at the meeting. Be My Neighbor Blocks for April 2017 The assigned Be My Neighbor blocks for April 2017 are Blocks 3,4 & 5. We d love to see them! ROUND ROBIN - PICK A THEME I hope you all are having fun working on your block! Remember to bring the pizza box you have, to exchange it at the next meeting. If you cannot be at the meeting, try to send the box with someone or contact the person you would give the box to. Thanks, Mona If you have any questions, please contact Mona Turner at UFO Busters Quilt Bee Meets on the Tuesday - 8 days after Nimble Thimbles, 7:00-9:00pm. We rotate the meeting in the homes of our members. This is a group that is open to all Nimble Thimble members old and new. Generally, it is a BYOP, hand work or machines may be brought. 4 Library Information The guild has an excellent library of quilt books for check out. Take time to see what is available. If you checked out a book last month, remember to return it this month. Thank you. Debbie Miller April Birthdays Happy Birthday Friends! April 9 Sandy Nodes If you have an April birthday and it is not listed here, I apologize for the omission. RB Quilt Frame Craftsman While at the Habitat Breakfast, I was approached by a gentlemen who makes quilt frames. I cannot vouch for quality or cost, but if you are interested, his name is LeRoy Ehlers. (H) (C) He has manufactured frames for other quilters, and welcomes your inquiries. Second Saturday Bee The Second Saturday in April is April 8, 2017 which is the Saturday before Easter. We will not be able to meet that day due to other planned activities at our meeting place (Standing Springs Baptist Church) in Simpsonville. We will plan to meet on May 13, 2017 which is the Second Saturday in May. Book Review Amazingly Simple Star Quilts Edited by Jeanne Stauffer and Sandra L. Hatch House of White Birches, pages There are thirty-seven different star quilts shown in this book. Each project begins with a quilt block shown in a color diagram including the name and size of the block. The Project Specifications include skill level, quilt size, block size, and the number of blocks for the quilt. The fabric and batting information for each project is clearly explained. The cutting directions for each fabric are excellent. You know what size strips and then what size for sub cutting. Cutting directions are written out as step one, step two, etc. and are not just a chart. I think that is one of the best features of the book. Information about how to piece each block includes pressing information so that your seams will nest. The quilt projects are shown in a variety of colors. They are not all red, white, and blue. The quilt Plenty of Stars is made with yellow, gold, and purple fabrics. I liked the variety of star quilt blocks shown in the book. There is a variety of setting arrangements in the different quilts so you are not always arranging blocks side by side. I did not always agree with the Skill Level suggested for the quilt projects. There were several quilts listed as Beginner that I would not call beginner because of the number of pieces in the block. The book is spiral bound so it lays flat if you want that option while working on your project. This book is available in our guild library. I checked it out in March and it will be available for check out again in April. By Yvonne Stiefel 4

Members and guests sign in and get your ticket(s) for the drawings. Take time to look at the guild library and check out and/or return books. requested colors to the next meeting. Becky We do not yet have the date of the next dedication, but will let the Guild know as soon as we have a confirmation. Take a look at: by Debbie Clarke by Shelia Chandler Check out class schedules at: You may subscribe to receive a weekly from Viking Sew and Quilt (at the shop check out their new location in Mauldin near K-Mart) to learn about the weekly special as well as tips/hints for quilting. Habitat for Humanity Philanthropy We had a wonderful March! We were selected by Habitat for Humanity as the Volunteer of the Year At the breakfast, Gail Peay, our liaison with Habitat, gave us a beautiful intro, and expressed how much Nimble Thimbles means to the Habitat organization. We were awarded a lovely fleece blanket, with pictures of prior dedications and quilts embossed into the fabric. If you are interested in longarm quilting visit They sell supplies and offer rental time on their Innova longarm machines (after completion of a training class) if you d like to be able to longarm quilt your own quilt projects. Upcoming Events April :00 P.M. Guild Meeting July 21-29, 2017 Carolina Shop Hop We continue to receive fabric donations for Habitat from other sources. Please do not hesitate to use these resources as you plan your next Habitat quilt. Just let us know the color wave you would like to peruse, and I will bring in a tote or two in your 5

April Block of the Month April showers are here! The winds of March bring the geese back north and the warm rainy weather, too! So, flying geese is the block for this month. I like to use the 5 square method, but you can use your favorite! Please use a water, shower, rainy or other rain weather related print! Cut 2 7 ¾ x 7 ¾ square of the print. Cut ¼ x 4 ¼ quares of white or white on white. Draw a diagonal line on the back of all 4 ¼ squares. Set two white squares on opposing corners of the print square (they will overlap). Take another white square and place it on the print corner, stitch ¼ from the line on both sides of the line. Cut on the line and press wings up. Trim this block to 6 ½ x 3 ½. Make sure that the point of the Sew ¼ on both sides of the drawn line, then cut on the line. goose is at 3 ¼ Stitch two blocks together flying the same direction it should look like a fox Press the ears up! Sew these blocks together like this. Have fun! Evelyn
