1 BEAD KNITTING Shimmery knit necklace An easy-to-knit crystal necklace hides a magnetic clasp designed by Ea Eden 1 Bead&Button online project

2 MATERIALS necklace 15 in. (38 cm) 864 Swarovski 4 mm round crystals small magnetic clasp 43.7 yd. (40 m) spool of metallic thread sewing or beading needle G-S Hypo Cement knitting needles, size 0 or 1 large knitting needle or dowel a stepbystep Necklace [1] Attach a sewing or beading needle to the end of a spool of metallic thread. String mm round crystals. [2] Leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail, cast on 14 stitches (Knitting Basics, p. 3). Knit two rows (Knitting Basics). [3] Work in bead knitting as follows. Row 3: Knit one stitch (K1). Slide one crystal up to the knitted stitch (C), and snug it up. The crystal will be facing away from you. Knit two stitches (K2), C, K2 (photo a). Add another crystal and work in the K2, C sequence until you reach the last stitch. K1. Row 4: K14 without crystals. Row 5: K2, C, six times. K2 (photo b). [4] Repeat rows 3 5 until the beadwork measures 15 in. (38 cm) or the desired necklace length. If needed, add thread at the end of a row: Tie a surgeon s knot (online Techniques) and dot with glue. Continue knitting, and weave in tails later. [5] Knit three rows without crystals and b bind off (Knitting Basics). Leaving a 24-in. (61 cm) tail on the beadwork, cut the thread from the spool. [6] Thread a needle on the tail. To sew the beadwork into a tube, position it vertically, crystal side down. Place a large knitting needle or dowel onto the beadwork and roll one end of the two sides around the dowel so that the first crystal in the row on the left side of the dowel is parallel to the last crystal in the same row on the right side. Sew across the gap and into the outer stitch on the opposite side (photo c), matching the two sides snugly. Continue sewing back and forth across the gap, until you have completed the tube. Leaving a 20-in. (51 cm) tail, tie a half-hitch knot (online Techniques), and dot with glue. Sew back through the beadwork for several rows, then turn and sew back to the end of the work. Remove the knitted tube from the form. [7] Sew around the end three times, closing the opening securely (photo d). [8] String half of a magnetic clasp onto the tail and sew the clasp to the base of c d EDITOR S NOTE: Knit a test swatch or two before you determine the size of knitting needles to use. Smaller needles create a tighter weave; larger needles create a looser weave. If you want to make a longer necklace, the swatch will help you determine the number of additional crystals you need. Once you have the swatch you want, count the number of crystals per inch in your swatch and multiply that number by the desired length of your necklace to find the total number of crystals. Don t forget to add the 129 crystals you will need for the bail. Ann Dee Bead&Button online project 2

3 e g the knitted tube, making several passes through the clasp (photo e). Knot the thread, dot with glue, and sew back through the knitted base. Trim the tail. [9] Thread a needle on the remaining tail and sew back through the knitted base. Trim the tail. [10] Add a 24-in. (61 cm) length of thread to the other end of the tube and repeat steps 7 9. Bail [1] Thread a sewing or beading needle onto a spool of metallic thread. String 129 crystals. [2] Leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail, cast on two stitches. Knit one row. Work in bead knitting as follows. Row 2: K1, C, K1. Row 3: Snug 15 crystals up to the stitches. K1 and knit again into the back of the first stitch to increase one stitch (Knitting Basics). K to end. [3] Repeat rows 2 and 3 until five loops are dangling from the beadwork and seven stitches are on the knitting needle (photo f). f Ea Eden is a selftaught knitter who has taken many beading and jewelry classes over the years. In the course of her knitting, she incorporated beads into her projects. You can contact Ea at edenbande@aol.com. [4] Continue knitting as follows: K1, C, K1 on even rows, and K7 without crystals on odd rows, until all crystals are used. Knit two rows without crystals. [5] Bind off (Knitting Basics), leaving a 20-in. (51 cm) tail. [6] Tie a half-hitch knot, dot with glue, and sew back through the beadwork for several rows. Trim the tail. [7] Fold the beadwork, beaded side out, over a large knitting needle or dowel, bringing the bound-off end in line with the high end of the diagonal row of beads. The beadwork should be in a straight line, with the loops dangling freely. Sew through the beadwork twice, front to back, along two rows, leaving an opening (photo g). Knot the thread, dot it with glue, and sew back through the beadwork to hide the tail. Trim the tail. [8] Slide the bail over one half of the clasp, and fasten the necklace inside the bail. w KNITTING BASICS Casting on (CO) Make a loop with the thread, leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail. 1 Insert the needle into the loop as shown. Tighten the loop around the needle. This counts as your first stitch. Hold the needle with the first stitch in your left hand, keeping the tail in front of the needle and the working thread in back of the needle. 2 Hold the empty needle in your right hand and slide its tip through the stitch on the left needle from the front of the stitch to the back. The needles will form an X, with the right needle behind the left needle. 3 Hold the crossed needles between your left thumb and forefinger. Using your right hand, wrap the working thread counterclockwise around the tip of the right needle. 4 Pull the tip of the right needle down and through the stitch, pulling the new loop through. Gently stretch the loop on the right needle. 3 Bead&Button online project

4 5 Working from left to right, slide the tip of the left needle through the loop on the right needle as shown. 6 Slide the right needle out of the loop, leaving two loops on the left needle. Pull gently to tighten the second stitch. Slide the tip of the right needle into the second stitch and repeat steps 2 6 until you have cast on the required number of stitches. Knit stitch (K) 1 Hold the needle with the cast-on stitches in your left hand, with the first stitch (the last cast-on stitch) about 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the needle tip. Slide the tip of the right needle into the first stitch, forming an X with the needles. Wrap the working thread around the tip of the right needle as shown. 3 Slide the stitch off the left needle, creating a loop on the right needle. Repeat steps 1 2 until all of the stitches have been knit off the left needle; this completes your first row. Switch the empty needle to your right hand and the full one to your left hand. Increasing (inc) Increasing means adding more stitches to a row. To make a simple increase, knit into the front and then into the back of an existing stitch. Binding off (BO) Place the needle with your stitches on it in your left hand and the empty needle in your right. Knit two stitches onto the right needle. 1 Slide the tip of the left needle into the outer stitch, pull it up and over the inner stitch, and drop it off the needle. 2 This leaves one loop on the right needle. To continue, knit another stitch onto the right needle and repeat step 1. 3 When you reach the last stitch on the left needle, knit it onto the right needle and repeat step 1. One loop remains on the needle. Cut the thread, remove the loop, pass the thread through the loop, and tighten. Weaving in tails Once all stitches have been bound off, the thread tails need to be woven in. Attach the remaining thread to a needle and weave it in and out of stitches on the wrong side of the beadwork. Trim the excess thread. 2 Slide the right needle and its loop down through the middle of the stitch, as in step 5 of casting on. Bead&Button online project 4
