4 LET S GET STARTED Tool kit 13 [15: 16: 18: 20] balls of Rowan Stone Washed Yarn 1 pair of 6.5mm (US10.5) knitting needles 1 Corrina Cardigan pattern 1 sewing needle Tension To ensure your crochet project has the same measurements as the pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before you start. A tension swatch is a small sample of crochet where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the tension given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the pattern s tension, it means your crochet is TIGHTER. If you get FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your crochet is LOOSER. 5 SIZING The pattern includes directions for 5 sizes. When the instructions differ between sizes, information is given for size 1 first, then for sizes 2-5 in brackets, separated by a colon. Beg with a RS row, work in g st throughout as folls: 2 Work 22 [22: 22: 22: 24] rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 3 Inc 1 st at each end of next and 2 [1: 0: 0: 0] foll 22nd rows, then on 1 [2: 3: 3: 3] foll 24th rows. 72 [80: 88: 94: 102] sts. 4 Work 23 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. You will now start shaping the right front. 10 Next row (RS): K41 [45: 49: 52: 56] and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. 10 SLEEVES 1 Using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles cast on 28 [30: 32: 32: 34] sts. Beg with a RS row, work in g st throughout as folls: 2 Inc 1 st at each end of 9th [9th: 7th: 5th: 5th] and every foll 10th [10th: 8th: 6th: 6th] row to 32 [46: 36: 38: 48] sts, then on every foll 12th [12th: 10th: 8th: 8th] row until there are 46 [50: 54: 60: 64] sts. 3 Cont straight until sleeve meas 43.5 [43.5: 44.5: 44.5: 44.5] cm / 17.1 [17.1: 17.5: 17.5: 17.5], ending with RS facing for next row. 4 Cast off. ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING 1 Fold body in half so that the cast on and cast off edges meet and the neck is central. Place centre of cast-off edge of sleeves to shoulder point of body. Sew sleeve to body using the perpendicular invisible seam technique. 2 Join the underarm and side seams using the vertical invisible seam technique. HELP! Ø 10

11 KNITTING TECHNIQUES Ø Help s only a stitch away. Watch the video tutorials online at Work! Work! Work! There are two main ways to work stitches: they can be knitted or purled. When the pattern asks you to work a number of stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify which stitch pattern to work in. Cable cast on / Ø Online video tutorial Create a slip knot on the left hand needle. Knit on one stitch, creating two stitches on the left hand needle. Now insert the right needle between the two stitches, wrap and bring through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand needle. Repeat until you have cast on the number of stitches indicated in the pattern. Garter Stitch / Ø Online video tutorial A reversible stitch pattern where all stitches are knitted on every row. Both sides of the fabric look like a series of waves. 11 CORRINA CARDIGAN

12 Increase into the next stitch / Ø Online video tutorial Work into the front and back of the next stitch as follows: insert your right needle into the front of the next stitch, as if to knit, wrap the yarn around the hook and draw through the stitch. Now, keeping the stitch on your needle, lift the right needle over the left and go into the back of the original stitch as if to purl. Wrap the yarn around the needle, draw it through and lift the stitch off the left needle. You have now increased by 1 stitch. Yarn markers / Ø Online video tutorial To make a yarn marker, take a 8cm/3 length of yarn, fold it in half and knot it together halfway so that you have a loop with a slightly larger circumference than your knitting needle. When the pattern tells you to place your marker, simply slip it onto the right needle, next to the last stitch worked. On the next row, when you come to your marker you simply slip it from the left needle to the right. Decrease / Ø Online video tutorial Instead of knitting only one stitch at a time, knit two stitches together. Insert the front of your right needle through the first two stitches of the left needle, then knit them together as a single stitch. Casting off / Ø Online video tutorial To complete your project, you need to cast off your last row of stitches in order to make an edge that won t unravel. For your final row, knit the first two stitches. Using the tip of the left needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second stitch and then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only one stitch on your right needle. Knit the next stitch from the left needle, #WOOLANDTHEGANG 12

13 then lift the previous stitch over it and off the needle as before. Do this with each stitch until there are no stitches on the left needle and just one stitch on the right needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm/6 end. Pull on the last loop until the end pops through - you ve now secured the last stitch. FINISHING TECHNIQUES Perpendicular invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial Align the pieces to be seamed side-by-side with the two pieces at right angles to each other. Insert the knitter s sewing needle through the vertical V on the piece where you are joining a cast on or cast off edge, and then through the horizontal bar on the piece where you are joining a side edge. Repeatthis and pull the yarn so that the two pieces join together. You will see that you have more rows to sew than stitches. To compensate for this, insert the needle under two horizontal bars on the side edge at the same time every third stitch. 13 CORRINA CARDIGAN

14 Vertical invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial This technique is used to join the side edges of two pieces. Place the two knitted pieces side by side with the right sides up. Insert your sewing needle under the first horizontal bar between the first two stitches on the edge you want to join. Pull the yarn through and insert the needle through the opposite horizontal bar on the other piece. Sew back and forth throuh the horizontal bars along the edge. To tighten the stitches, pull the yarn gently and they will disappear. HELP! Ø 14

15 Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off and stop it from unravelling. Thread the tail end of yarn into the sewing needle. Weave the yarn through the stiches in the wrong side of the work, following the natural stitch direction created when the piece was knitted. Weave in approximately 10cm/4, then cut the tail. 15 CORRINA CARDIGAN
