4 LET S GET STARTED Tool kit 7 [8: 9: 9: 10] balls of Rowan Stone Washed yarn 1 pair of 6.5mm (US10.5) knitting needles 1 Forever Young Top pattern 1 sewing needle Tension To ensure your crochet project has the same measurements as the pattern, it is a good idea to make a tension swatch before you start. A tension swatch is a small sample of crochet where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the tension given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the pattern s tension, it means your crochet is TIGHTER. If you get FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your crochet is LOOSER. 5 SIZING The pattern includes directions for 5 sizes. When the instructions differ between sizes, information is given for size 1 first, then for sizes 2-5 in brackets, separated by a colon. 7 HOW TO MAKE YOUR FOREVER YOUNG TOP To make the instructions easier to read, we will use some simple abbreviations: K = knit P = purl st(s) = stitch(es) RS = right side WS = wrong side rep = repeat cont = continue work 2 tog = work (knit or purl) 2 stitches together patt = pattern dec = decreas(e)(ing) inc = increas(e)(ing) beg = begin(ning) foll = following meas = measures rem = remain(ing) alt = alternate 0 = no stitches, times or rows for that size BACK 1 Using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles cast on 81 [89: 99: 107: 113] sts using the cable cast on technique. 2 Row 1 (RS): K2, HP1, K1, rep from H to last st, K1. 3 Row 2: K1, HP1, K1, rep from H to end. These 2 rows form the rib. 4 Cont in rib for a further 27 rows, ending with WS facing for next row. 5 HHNext row (WS): Rib 2 [1: 1: 0: 3], work 2 tog, (rib 3, work 2 tog) 15 [17: 19: 21: 21] times, rib 2 [1: 1: 0: 3]. 65 [71: 79: 85: 91] sts. 7 FOREVER YOUNG TANK

8 6 Place a yarn marker at both ends of last row (to mark the top of the side seam openings). 7 Next row (RS): Knit. Now work in patt as folls: 8 Rows 1 to 3: Knit. 9 Row 4 (RS): Winding yarn twice round needle for every st, K to end. 10 Row 5: K to end, dropping extra loops. 11 Rows 6 to 8: Knit. 12 Row 9 (WS): Winding yarn twice round needle for every st, K to end. 13 Row 10: K to end, dropping extra loops. These 10 rows form patt. 9 You will now start to shape the armholes. 16 Keeping patt correct, cast off 6 [7: 7: 8: 8] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 45 [49: 57: 61: 67] sts. 17 Dec 1 st at each end of next 7 [7: 9: 7: 7] rows, then on foll 1 [2: 2: 4: 4] alt rows, then on foll 4th row. 27 [29: 33: 37: 43] sts. 18 Work 9 [9: 11: 11: 13] rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 19 Inc 1 st at each end of next and foll 4th row, then on foll 3 alt rows, taking inc sts into patt. 37 [39: 43: 47: 53] sts. 20 Work 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. You will now start to shape the back neck 21 Next row (RS): Inc in first st, patt 8 [9: 10: 12: 14] sts and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. Work each side of neck separately. 22 Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at neck edge of next 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 7 [8: 9: 11: 13] sts. 10 24 Dec 1 st at beg of next row. 25 Cast off rem 3 [3: 4: 5: 6] sts. 26 With RS facing, slip centre 19 [19: 21: 21: 23] sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn, patt to last st, inc in last st. 27 Complete to match first side, reversing shapings. FRONT 1 Using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles cast on 81 [89: 99: 107: 113] sts. 2 Work in rib as given for back for 17 rows, ending with WS facing for next row. 3 Now work as given for back from HH to HH. You will now start to shape the armholes. 4 Keeping patt correct, cast off 3 [4: 4: 5: 5] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 51 [55: 63: 67: 73] sts. 5 Dec 1 st at each end of next 3 [3: 5: 5: 5] rows, then on foll 3 [4: 4: 4: 4] alt rows. 39 [41: 45: 49: 55] sts. 6 Work 11 [11: 13: 15: 15] rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 11 7 Next row (RS): Patt 13 [14: 15: 17: 20] sts and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. 8 Work each side of neck separately. 9 Keeping patt correct, dec 1 st at neck edge of next 4 rows, then on foll 2 [2: 2: 2: 3] alt rows, then on 2 foll 4th rows. 5 [6: 7: 9: 11] sts. 10 Work 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 12 ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING 1 Join right shoulder seam using the horizontal invisible seam technique. NECKBAND 1 With RS facing and using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles, pick up and knit 22 [22: 22: 22: 24] sts down left side of front neck, K across 13 [13: 15: 15: 15] sts on front holder, pick up and knit 22 [22: 22: 22: 24] sts up right side of front neck, and 5 sts down right side of back neck, K across 19 [19: 21: 21: 23] sts on back holder inc 1 st at centre, then pick up and knit 5 sts up left side of back neck. 87 [87: 91: 91: 97] sts. 2 Row 1: (WS): P1, HK1, P1, rep from H to end. 3 Row 2: K1, HP1, K1, rep from H to end. 4 These 2 rows form rib. 5 Work in rib for a further 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 6 Cast off in rib. 7 Join left shoulder and neckband seam. #WOOLANDTHEGANG 12

13 LEFT ARMHOLE BORDER 1 With RS facing and using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles, pick up and knit 43 [47: 49: 53: 56] sts up left front armhole edge to shoulder seam, then 50 [54: 58: 62: 65] sts down left back armhole edge. 93 [101: 107: 115: 121] sts 2 Work in rib as given for neckband for 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row 3 Cast off in rib. RIGHT ARMHOLE BORDER 1 With RS facing and using 6.5mm (US 10.5) needles, pick up and knit 50 [54: 58: 62: 65] sts up right back armhole edge to shoulder seam, then 43 [47: 49: 53: 56] sts down right front armhole edge. 93 [101: 107: 115: 121] sts. 2 Work in rib as given for neckband for 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 3 Cast off in rib. 4 Join side seams using the vertical invisible seam technique leaving side seams open below markers. (NOTE: the front rib is 12 rows shorter than back rib.) 13 FOREVER YOUNG TANK

14 KNITTING TECHNIQUES Ø Help s only a stitch away. Watch the video tutorials online at Work! Work! Work! There are two main ways to work stitches: they can be knitted or purled. When the pattern asks you to work a number of stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify which stitch pattern to work in. Cable cast on / Ø Online video tutorial Create a slip knot on the left hand needle. Knit on one stitch, creating two stitches on the left hand needle. Now insert the right needle between the two stitches, wrap and bring through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand needle. Repeat until you have cast on the number of stitches indicated in the pattern. Yarn markers / Ø Online video tutorial To make a yarn marker, take a 8cm/3 length of yarn, fold it in half and knot it together halfway so that you have a loop with a slightly larger circumference than your knitting needle. When the pattern tells you to place your marker, simply slip it onto the right needle, next to the last stitch worked. On the next row, when you come to your marker you simply slip it from the left needle to the right. HELP! Ø 14

15 Decrease / Ø Online video tutorial Instead of knitting only one stitch at a time, knit two stitches together. Insert the front of your right needle through the first two stitches of the left needle, then knit them together as a single stitch. Increase into the next stitch / Ø Online video tutorial Work into the front and back of the next stitch as follows: insert your right needle into the front of the next stitch, as if to knit, wrap the yarn around the hook and draw through the stitch. Now, keeping the stitch on your needle, lift the right needle over the left and go into the back of the original stitch as if to purl. Wrap the yarn around the needle, draw it through and lift the stitch off the left needle. You have now increased by 1 stitch. Casting off / Ø Online video tutorial To complete your project, you need to cast off your last row of stitches in order to make an edge that won t unravel. For your final row, knit the first two stitches. Using the tip of the left needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second stitch and then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only one stitch on your right needle. Knit the next stitch from the left needle, then lift the previous stitch over it and off the needle as before. Do this with each stitch until there are no stitches on the left needle and just one stitch on the right needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm/6 end. Pull on the last loop until the end pops through - you ve now secured the last stitch. 15 FOREVER YOUNG TANK

16 Picking up stitches / Ø Online video tutorial To pick up stitches along a cast-off edge, insert the right needle through the first cast-off stitch from front to back, taking care to catch both of the vertical yarn loops at the top of the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull through as for a normal knit stitch. Now do the same for the next stitch along the edge. Sometimes it is necessary to pick up more or fewer stitches than the number of cast-off stitches along your edge - to do this, you can pick up two new stitches through the same castoff stitch, or not pick up through all your cast-off stitches. #WOOLANDTHEGANG 16

17 FINISHING TECHNIQUES Horizontal invisible seam technique / Ø Online video tutorial This technique is used for sewing together horizontal edges (like cast on and cast off edges). Align the two edges so that they are lined up stitch by stitch. Insert the sewing needle under a V stitch and then under the corresponding V stitch on the other side. Continue in this way until the seam is complete. Vertical invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial This technique is used to join the side edges of two pieces. Place the two knitted pieces side by side with the right sides up. Insert your sewing needle under the first horizontal bar between the first two stitches on the edge you want to join. Pull the yarn through and insert the needle through the opposite horizontal bar on the other piece. Sew back and forth throuh the horizontal bars along the edge. To tighten the stitches, pull the yarn gently and they will disappear. 17 FOREVER YOUNG TANK

18 Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off and stop it from unravelling. Thread the tail end of yarn into the sewing needle. Weave the yarn through the stiches in the wrong side of the work, following the natural stitch direction created when the piece was knitted. Weave in approximately 10cm/4, then cut the tail. HELP!
