A tension swatch is a small sample of crochet where you count the stitches and rows and check them against the tension given in the pattern. If you get MORE stitches/rows than the pattern s tension, it means your crochet is TIGHTER. If you get FEWER stitches/rows than the pattern, your crochet is LOOSER. Sometimes, it works to crochet tighter or looser to compensate. 7 HOW TO MAKE YOUR ALL TANGLED UP TOP NOTE: When casting off, decrease every 3 sts down to 2 sts (by working K2tog, K1 on cast-off row) to stop edges stretching too much. All stitch counts given relate to original number of stitches and do NOT take these decreases into account. To make the instructions easier to read, we will use some simple abbreviations: K = knit P = purl st(s) = stitch(es) dec = decreas(e)(ing) beg = begin(ning) foll = following rem = remain(ing) rep = repeat alt = alternate cont = continue RS = right side WS = wrong side tbl = through back of loop meas = measures BACK 1 Using your 9mm (US 13) needles and one strand each of yarns A and B held together cast on 79 [85: 93: 99: 107] sts using the cable cast on technique. 2 Row 1 (RS): K1, HP1, K1, rep from H to end. 3 Row 2: P1, HK1, P1, rep from H to end. These 2 rows form the rib. 4 Work in rib for a further 3 rows, ending with WS facing for next row. 7 ALL TANGLED UP TOP

8 5 Change to 10mm (US 15) needles. Now work in twisted rib as follows: 6 Row 1 (WS): P1 tbl, HK1 tbl, P1 tbl, rep from H to end. 7 Row 2: K1 tbl, HP1 tbl, K1 tbl, rep from H to end. These 2 rows form the twisted rib. Keeping twisted rib correct throughout, continue as follows: 8 Decrease 1 st at each end of the 2nd and following 4th [4th: 6th: 6th: 8th] row, then on the following alternate [4th: 4th: 6th: 6th] row. 73 [79: 87: 93: 101] sts. 9 Continue straight until the back measures 44 [46: 48: 50: 52] cm / 17.3 [18.1: 18.9: 17.7: 20/5] from the cast on edge, ending with RS facing for next row. You will now start to shape the shoulders. 10 Cast off 3 [4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next 2 rows (see pattern note), then 4 [4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of foll 2 rows. 59 [63: 67: 73: 77] sts. You will now start to shape the back neck. 11 (RS): Cast off 4 [4: 5: 6: 6] sts, work in rib until there are 11 [13: 13: 15: 17] sts on right needle and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. 9 12 Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 3 rows, ending with RS facing for next row, AND AT SAME TIME cast off 4 [5: 5: 6: 7] sts at beg of 2nd row. 13 Cast off rem 4 [5: 5: 6: 7] sts. 14 With RS facing, rejoin yarns and cast off centre 29 [29: 31: 31: 31] sts (see pattern note), rib to end. 15 Complete to match first side, reversing shapings. You will now start to shape the front neck. 2 Next row (RS): Rib 25 [28: 32: 35: 40] sts and turn, leaving rem sts on a holder. 3 Work each side of neck separately. 4 Dec 1 st at neck edge of next 3 [3: 4: 4: 4] rows, then on foll 0 [0: 0: 0: 1] alt row. 22 [25: 28: 31: 35] sts. 5 Work 0 [0: 1: 1: 1] row, ending with RS facing for next row. You will now start to shape the shoulders. 6 Cast off 3 [4: 5: 5: 6] sts at beg of next and foll 0 [2: 3: 1: 2] alt rows (see pattern note), then 4 [5: 0: 6: 7] sts at beg of foll 3 [1: 0: 2: 1] alt rows and at same time dec 1 st at neck edge of next and foll 2 alt rows. 7 Work 1 row. 8 Cast off rem 4 [5: 5: 6: 7] sts. 9 With RS facing, rejoin yarns and cast off centre 23 [23: 23: 23: 21] sts (see pattern note), rib to end. SLEEVES 1 Using 9mm (US 13) needles and one strand each of yarns A and B held together cast on 27 [29: 29: 29: 31] sts. 2 Work in rib as given for back for 5 rows, ending with WS facing for next row. Change to 10mm (US 15) needles. 3 Beg with row 1, now work in twisted rib as given for back, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 6th [6th: 4th: 4th: 2nd] and every foll 6th [6th: 4th: 4th: 4th] row to 37 [47: 41: 53: 59] sts, then on every foll 8th [-: 6th: 6th: -] row until there are 43 [47: 51: 55: 59] sts, taking inc sts into twisted rib. 4 Cont straight until sleeve meas 45 [45: 46: 46: 46] cm, 17.7 [17.7: 18.1: 18.1: 18.1] ending with RS facing for next row. You will now start to shape the top. 5 Cast off 4 [5: 5: 6: 6] sts at beg of next 2 [4: 2: 6: 2] rows (see pattern note), then 5 [6: 6: 0: 7] sts at beg of foll 4 [2: 4: 0: 4] rows. 6 Cast off rem 15 [15: 17: 19: 19] sts. 11 ALL TANGLED UP TOP

12 ASSEMBLY AND FINISHING 1 Join right shoulder seam using the horizontal invisible seam technique. NECKBAND 1 With RS facing, using 9mm (US 13) needles and one strand each of yarns A and B held together, pick up and knit 9 [9: 11: 11: 12] sts down left side of front neck, 19 [19: 19: 19: 17] sts from front, 9 [9: 11: 11: 12] sts up right side of front neck, 3 sts down right side of back neck, 24 [24: 26: 26: 26] sts from back, and 3 sts up left side of back neck. 67 [67: 73: 73: 73] sts. 2 Beg with row 2, work in twisted rib as given for back for 5 rows, ending with RS facing for next row. 3 Cast off in rib. 4 Join left shoulder and neckband seam. Measuring from the outer most point of the shoulders, place a marker or scrap of yarn 17 [18.5: 20: 21.5: 23] cm / 8.2 [8.8: 9.4: 10: 10.6] down the side seam edges of the body to mark the base of the armhole openings. 5 Place centre of cast-off edge of sleeves to shoulder seams. Sew sleeve to body using the perpendicular invisible seam technique and using the markers as guidelines. 6 Join the underarm and side seams using the vertical invisible seam technique. #WOOLANDTHEGANG 12

13 KNITTING TECHNIQUES Ø Help s only a stitch away. Watch the video tutorials online at Work! Work! Work! There are two main ways to work stitches: they can be knitted or purled. When the pattern asks you to work a number of stitches/rows/cm, it will always specify which stitch pattern to work in. Cable cast on / Ø Online video tutorial Create a slip knot on the left hand needle. Knit on one stitch, creating two stitches on the left hand needle. Now insert the right needle between the two stitches, wrap and bring through. Transfer the newly created stitch onto the left hand needle. Repeat until you have cast on the number of stitches indicated in the pattern. Yarn markers / Ø Online video tutorial To make a yarn marker, take a 8cm/3 length of yarn, fold it in half and knot it together halfway so that you have a loop with a slightly larger circumference than your knitting needle. When the pattern tells you to place your marker, simply slip it onto the right needle, next to the last stitch worked. On the next row, when you come to your marker you simply slip it from the left needle to the right. 13 ALL TANGLED UP TOP

14 Twisted rib / Ø Online video tutorial This is a variation on the 1 x 1 rib that creates a neat, gorgeous rib pattern. It is created by working into the back of each stitch as follows: Twsited knit stitch: Holding the yarn ready to work a knit stitch, insert the right needle into the back of the next stitch on the left needle, with the tip of the right needle sitting behind the left needle. Wrap the yarn as for a normal knit stitch, pull through and complete the stitch: you have now knitted this stitch twisted. Twisted purl stitch: Bring the yarn to the front of the work, between the two needles, hold the yarn as if to purl the next stitch and insert the right needle into the back of the next stitch from left to right. Your right needle will be behind the left needle as you do this, and the tips of both needles will be pointing to the right. Wrap the yarn and complete as a purl stitch: this stitch was purled twisted. Decrease / Ø Online video tutorial Instead of knitting only one stitch at a time, knit two stitches together. Insert the front of your right needle through the first two stitches of the left needle, then knit them together as a single stitch. Casting off / Ø Online video tutorial To complete your project, you need to cast off your last row of stitches in order to make an edge that won t unravel. For your final row, work the first two stitches. Using the tip of the left needle, lift the first stitch up and over the second stitch HELP! Ø 14

15 and then slip it off the right needle. Now you have only one stitch on your right needle. Work the next stitch from the left needle, then lift the previous stitch over it and off the needle as before. Do this with each stitch until there are no stitches on the left needle and just one stitch on the right needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a 15 cm/6 end. Pull on the last loop until the end pops through - you ve now secured the last stitch. Picking up stitches / Ø Online video tutorial To pick up stitches along a cast-off edge, insert the right needle through the first cast-off stitch from front to back, taking care to catch both of the vertical yarn loops at the top of the stitch. Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull through as for a normal knit stitch. Now do the same for the next stitch along the edge. Sometimes it is necessary to pick up more or fewer stitches than the number of cast-off stitches along your edge - to do this, you can pick up two new stitches through the same castoff stitch, or not pick up through all your cast-off stitches. 15 ALL TANGLED UP TOP

16 FINISHING TECHNIQUES Horizontal invisible seam technique / Ø Online video tutorial This technique is used for sewing together horizontal edges (like cast on and cast off edges). Align the two edges so that they are lined up stitch by stitch. Insert the sewing needle under a V stitch and then under the corresponding V stitch on the other side. Continue in this way until the seam is complete. Vertical invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial This technique is used to join the side edges of two pieces. Place the two knitted pieces side by side with the right sides up. Insert your sewing needle under the first horizontal bar between the first two stitches on the edge you want to join. Pull the yarn through and insert the needle through the opposite horizontal bar on the other piece. Sew back and forth throuh the horizontal bars along the edge. To tighten the stitches, pull the yarn gently and they will disappear. #WOOLANDTHEGANG 16

17 Perpendicular invisible seam / Ø Online video tutorial Align the pieces to be seamed side-by-side with the two pieces at right angles to each other. Insert the knitter s sewing needle through the vertical V on the piece where you are joining a cast on or cast off edge, and then through the horizontal bar on the piece where you are joining a side edge. Repeatthis and pull the yarn so that the two pieces join together. You will see that you have more rows to sew than stitches. To compensate for this, insert the needle under two horizontal bars on the side edge at the same time every third stitch. 17 ALL TANGLED UP TOP

18 Weaving in the ends / Ø Online video tutorial Weave the ends of your yarn into your knitting to finish it off and stop it from unravelling. Thread the tail end of yarn into the sewing needle. Weave the yarn through the stiches in the wrong side of the work, following the natural stitch direction created when the piece was knitted. Weave in approximately 10cm/4, then cut the tail. HELP!
