[2] Using a 3-yd. (2.7m) length of Fireline, leave a 6-in. (15cm) tail and work in ladder stitch (Basics, p. 142 and figure 1) with hex beads to the desired length. Secure the tail with half-hitch knots between the beads (Basics) and trim. Don t end the working thread in case you need to adjust the length. [3] Start a new 3-yd. length of Fireline and sew through the first bead in the ladder, leaving a 10-in. (25cm) tail. Work in modified Ndebele herringbone stitch by picking up two hexes and sewing through the next bead (figure 2, a b). Pick up three cylinder beads and sew through the next bead (b c). Repeat across the ladder using hexes along the bottom edge and cylinders along the top. [4] Exit the last bead in the ladder with the needle at the top edge. Use the working thread from step 1 to add or remove beads as needed to adjust the length. Secure the tail and trim. [5] With the new thread, pick up three cylinders and a soldered jump ring. Sew back through the three cylinders, the last bead in the ladder, and the last bead added (d e). [7] Finish the other end as in step 3 (b c). Secure the threads and trim. Embellishments gold/red collar [1] Start a new 3-yd. length of Fireline at either end of the collar. Pick up two hexes, a cylinder, a 4mm crystal, and three cylinders. Sew back through the crystal. Pick up a cylinder and two hexes. Sew through the next two beads in the previous row (figure 4, a b). [2] Pick up a cylinder, a teardrop, and a cylinder. Sew through the next two beads on the previous row (b c). Alternate between crystals and teardrops to complete the row. [3] To finish, reinforce the soldered ring when you reach the end of the row. Secure the working thread with halfhitch knots and trim. Repeat with the 10-in. tail on the other end. [4] Attach the clasp to the soldered rings. silver/purple collar [1] Start a new 3-yd. length of Fireline. [2] Pick up a cylinder, a 4mm crystal, and three cylinders. Sew through the 4mm crystal and pick up a cylinder. Sew through the next two hexes on the previous row (figure 5, a b). [3] Pick up a hex, a cylinder, a crystal, and three cylinders. Sew through the crystal and pick up a cylinder and a hex. Sew through the next two hexes on the previous row (b c). [4] Repeat step 2 (c d). [5] Pick up a cylinder, a teardrop, and a cylinder. Sew through the next two hexes on the previous row (d e). Repeat steps 2 5 to complete the row. [6] Repeat steps 3 4 of the gold/red collar to finish the ends. Earrings [1] Prepare the chain by cutting it into six pieces of graduated lengths, starting with 1 2 in. (1.3cm) and ending with in. (6.4cm) (photo a). 104 Bead&Button beadandbutton.com

Make a total of three crystal dangles. [3] Make a 45-degree bend 1 4 in.

Bend the straight wire to a 45-degree angle to form a triangle over a bead (photo b). Cut the wire about 1 8 in.

[4] Open the plain loops on the dangles and connect one to the end link of each chain cut in step 1 (photo d).

Connect the first bead to the sixth (photo e).

[7] Sew through the top link on the shortest dangle and back up the stack of hexes that the thread is exiting (photo g).

[9] Repeat step 8, attaching each remaining chain from shortest to longest.

[ c ] [ g ] FIGURE 6 [ d ] [ h ] [2] String a crystal on a head pin and make a plain loop (Basics) above the crystal. Make a total of three crystal dangles. [3] Make a 45-degree bend 1 4 in. (6mm) from the end of the wire and slide a teardrop to the bend. Bend the straight wire to a 45-degree angle to form a triangle over a bead (photo b). Cut the wire about 1 8 in. (3mm) above the triangle and make a plain loop (Basics and photo c). Make a total of three teardrop dangles. [4] Open the plain loops on the dangles and connect one to the end link of each chain cut in step 1 (photo d). Close the loops and set aside. [5] Start a 1-yd (.9m) length of Fireline and stitch a six-bead ladder, leaving a 6-in. tail. Connect the first bead to the sixth (photo e). [6] Work two rows of tubular Ndebele herringbone (figure 6), exiting one of the hexes in the last row (photo f). [7] Sew through the top link on the shortest dangle and back up the stack of hexes that the thread is exiting (photo g). [8] Sew down through the next stack, pick up the second shortest dangle, and sew back up the same stack. [9] Repeat step 8, attaching each remaining chain from shortest to longest. End with the needle exiting one of the hexes on the ladder (photo h). [10] Pick up a spacer, an accent bead, a cylinder, a crystal, a cylinder, and a soldered jump ring. Go back through all the beads and sew through the ladder opposite where the thread is exiting. Reinforce with a second thread path, secure the tails, and trim.
