It is hard to fathom the depth of their patriotism and sacrifice from the comfort of our homes. These individuals willingly position themselves as a shield between our families, friends and neighbors and the perils of the world. Let us be thankful for their courage, integrity, dedication and sacrifice. Cutting Instructions From Assorted Red and Blue Scraps: Cut 1.5 inch squares for letters using the chart at right. From White Fabric: Cut 1.5 inch squares for letters using the chart at right. Cut two strips that measure 1.5 inches x width of fabric. Cut two rectangles that measure 1.5 inches x 5 inches. 2 Make the Half Square Triangles Step 1: Take one 1.5 inch white square and place it right side up on your work surface. Step 2: Take one 1.5 inch red or blue square and using a thin pencil, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the fabric. Place it right side down on the cream square. Step 3: Sew along the diagonal line (Diagram 1) Step 4: Trim the block ¼ inch from the line you just sewed and press the seam toward the darker fabric (Diagram 2). Letter A N K Number of Half Square Triangles Needed 2 red/white 4 blue/white 6 red/white Sewing Instructions for Letters Step 1: Lay out the 1.5 inch squares, half square triangles and rectangles in rows according to the diagram for each letter. Step 2: Sew the squares, half square triangles and rectangles together row by row according to the diagram for each letter and press seams open. Step 3: Sew the rows together and press seams open. 2

Sew the Letters Together and Add Border #1 Step 1: Lay out the letters and sew all the letters together in the order shown. Press seams open. Step 2: Sew a 1.

Cut off excess fabric on each left and right border so the borders are even with the letters. Press seams open. Step 3: Sew one 1.

Step 2: Sew a 1.5 x 5 inch white rectangle to the left side of the letters and sew a 1.5 x 5 inch white rectangle to the right side of the letters. Cut off excess fabric on each left and right border so the borders are even with the letters. Press seams open. Step 3: Sew one 1.5 x width of fabric white strip to the top of the letters and sew one 1.5 x width of fabric white strip to the bottom of the letters. Cut off excess fabric on each top and bottom border so they are even with the left and right borders. Press seams open. 4

Add Border #2 Step 4: Cut one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy solid strip in half so you have two strips that measure 3/4 inches x 21

Referring to the diagram below, sew one half to the left side of the table runner and sew one half to the right side of the table

Step 5: Sew one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy solid strip to the top of the table runner and sew one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy

Cut off excess fabric on each top and bottom border so they are even with the left and the right border. Press seams open.

5 Add Border #2 Step 4: Cut one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy solid strip in half so you have two strips that measure 3/4 inches x 21 inches long. Referring to the diagram below, sew one half to the left side of the table runner and sew one half to the right side of the table runner. Cut off excess fabric to make each left and right border even with border #1. Press seams open. Step 5: Sew one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy solid strip to the top of the table runner and sew one 3/4 inch x width of fabric navy solid strip to the bottom of the table runner. Cut off excess fabric on each top and bottom border so they are even with the left and the right border. Press seams open. Add Border #3 Step 6: Cut one of the 3.0 inches x width of fabric red print strips in half so you have two strips that measure 3.0 inches wide x 21 inches long. Referring to the diagram below, sew one half to the left side of the table runner and sew the other half to the right side of the table runner. Cut off excess fabric to make each left and right border even with border #2. Press seams open. 5

Step 7: Sew one 3.0 x width of fabric red print strip to the top of the table runner and sew one 3.0 x width of fabric strip to the bottom of the table runner.

6 Step 7: Sew one 3.0 x width of fabric red print strip to the top of the table runner and sew one 3.0 x width of fabric strip to the bottom of the table runner. Cut off excess fabric on each top and bottom border so they are even with the left and right borders. Press seams open. Finish the Table Runner Step 1: Quilt the table runner using your favorite quilting method.
