1 THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON WOMEN S CLUB Peggy Walchalk/Carrie Tomko, Editors / January / February 2015 The Fall General Meeting Highlights Our general meeting was held on November 20th at the historic Hower House. That evening we were truly inspired by the folklore and beautiful melodies provided by the German Choir. We also had an opportunity to meet one of our scholarship recipients, Kaylin Hauler. Centerpiece winners included Carolyn Cox, Sharon Gandee, Grace Goettler, Kathryn Sasowsky, and Diane Wolf. Enjoy more pictures on page 3. 2 New Member Molly McBurney By Carrie Tomko Resides in: Highland Square, Akron. Hometown is in Wisconsin. In the Spotlight Connection to The University of Akron: Molly joined The University of Akron School of Law in 2010 as Assistant Professor of Legal Writing and Research. Stated Molly, It made perfect sense to teach legal writing. Education and Work History: Prior to joining Akron Law, Molly taught Legal Rhetoric: Research and Writing at American University s Washington College of Law as the first recipient of the Legal Rhetoric Program s Graduate Teaching Fellowship. She also worked as a law clerk for Pishevar & Associates, P.C., a small general practice firm. Professor Molly received her B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and J.D., cum laude, from Washington College of Law. While in law school, she was a Note & Comment Editor for the American University International Law Review, a student attorney in the General Practice Clinic, a Legal Rhetoric Dean s Fellow, participated in the Marshall- Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project, and held an internship with the Federal Programs Branch of the Department of Justice s Civil Division. Molly McBurney in her office Participation in the Club: Molly enjoys the Evening Book Club and the Scholarship Committee, including review of the Bylaws concerning the Scholarship Committee. As a lawyer and legal writing instructor, her involvement in a review of the entire UAWC Bylaws document mushroomed after reviewing the Scholarship Committee Bylaws. Favorite Activities Outside of the Club: Molly is a runner. She stated, I enjoy the Metro parks and the Tow Path. She likes to cook and appreciates the easy access to healthy, natural food in the Akron area. In addition, Molly enjoys reading, knitting, and crocheting. And, she has two cats. My cats are a little spoiled, she confessed. Travel: Molly travels for return visits to her home state of Wisconsin. She also visits Missouri and Washington, D.C. to visit people and places where she was educated. She frequents the Twin Cities in Minnesota where she has family. For vacation, she likes the beach and the mountains. Also, Molly studied abroad in Germany for eight weeks, but spent ten weeks total in Europe in order to see the sights.

4 Holiday Luncheon The annual Holiday Luncheon was held on December 11th at the gorgeous O Neil House. The afternoon provided a wonderful meal with many delightful memories that are captured on this page. Many thanks to Beverly Brockett and Carolyn Cox for organizing the enjoyable afternoon.

Hansford, UA Vice President and Dean Emeritus, passed away on December 29, Afternoon Book Review Mr. Hansford will be missed by many and remembered for his generosity and attributes contributed to UA including bringing UA s mascot, Zippy, to life. Exchange Street, Akron, 44302, ( ) at 11:30 on the last Tuesday of the month. We meet in the Terrace Room for lunch; it s so pleasant and we don t have to move we can discuss the book right there. Lunch selections are (1) salad bar (2) hot meal bar, or (3) from the menu (the full buffet is $9.95 plus service charge). There are usually three choices for lunch. Please call Iris to learn of the choices, as she lets Rockynol know ahead of the meeting what everyone would like. Schedule: January 22nd February 26th March 26th Women s Evening Chair: Anais Webb (330) Evening bridge meets the first Monday evening of the month at 7 p.m. and ends by 10 p.m. We meet in members homes for bridge and dessert. Anyone is welcome to join this group or join the sub list.
