CHIPS The monthly newsletter of the Westchester Branch of the American Association of University Women, Westchester County, New York State BRANCH MEETING OCTOBER 1ST AT 6 PM GREENBURGH PUBLIC LIBRARY Women in Prison: Bedford and Beyond Tamar Kraft-Stolar Jaya Vasandani In September domestic violence, depicting the perpetrator s full rage and indifference for the victim, was captured on film in a hotel elevator and shown repeatedly on public media. The assault was given such wide publicity because it involved a well-known NFL football player. However, domestic violence occurs at all levels of society, usually in private. Often there is no public evidence beyond bruises or injury to the victim who is often afraid to bring charges. An estimated 9 in 10 incarcerated women have endured physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In a very timely presentation our October program meeting will highlight an update on the current status of the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act campaign and its next steps. There will also be a description of the work The Women in Prison Project does and the issues that women encounter in prison and in the criminal justice system including the shackling of pregnant women. Our speakers include Tamar Kraft-Stolar, Director of the Women in Prison Project, Correctional Association of New York and Jaya Vasandani, Associate Director of the Women in Prison Project, Correctional Association of NY. Their responsibilities include prison monitoring, legislative and policy advocacy, coalition building, community organizing and fundraising. Tamar graduated Cornell University summa cum laude, worked on the CA s campaign to repeal New York s Rockefeller Drug Laws. Jaya has a JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and a Bachelor s in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and worked on federal and state policy advocacy on women s rights issues as a Policy Associate at the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Center for Women Policy Issues in Washington, DC. Please come! This is a not to be missed meeting! 1
