2 From the Director Greetings, friends! I am excited to share the 2015 Hillsdale College Hostel schedule with you. I invite you to attend one of our many Hillsdale Hostel programs, which are taught by members of the College faculty and address topics such as economics, history, literature, politics, and religion. now in its 26th year, the Hostel program continues to grow. Seminars are now held at three locations on the Hillsdale campus, at the Rockwell Lake Lodge in northern Michigan, and at the College s Allan P. Kirby, Jr. Center for Constitutional Studies and Citizenship in Washington, D.C. This year s Hostel programs feature new lecture topics at all three locations, including an intergenerational program that parents and grandparents are encouraged to attend with junior high- and high school-age children. registration information for all 2015 Hostel programs is included in this brochure. THE WAR OF 1812 AND THE MADISON PRESIDENCY October 21-24, 2015 A Kirby Center Hostel making the 200th anniverary of the end of the War of 1812, and discussing as well the presidency of James Madison, will be held in October Kirby Center Washington, D.C.

The Civil War is one of the three great crises in American history, the other two being the American Revolution and the Progressive threat today. This intergenerational Hostel designed for junior high- and high school-age children and their parents or grandparents will consider the political thought and statesmanship of Abraham Lincoln, as well as the history of the Civil War. THE GREAT CONVERSATION IN WESTERN LITERATURE July 12-18, 2015 Great literature reflects and shapes the character of a civilization and of its citizens. Thus Homer was called the schoolteacher of the Greeks. Who are the schoolteachers of America, and more generally, of the citizens of the West? This Hostel will examine the great conversation in Western literature, beginning in ancient Greece and Rome and continuing through Renaissance Europe, Elizabethan England, and the United States.
