1 Donations In Kind a project of: RAWCS-Northern Region June 2013 Districts Rotary International Let s see what the ambitions are for Donations in Kind as we move into another Rotary Year, First we would like to think that the ongoing saga of missing containers will have come to an end thanks to hours of telephone and by John Paskin and our friends in PNG.. See a separate note on this matter herein. The good news is that we are still in business with two containers a month and an occasional special. See you at the store! HOSPITAL LINEN Regular deliveries of hospital linen have been coming up from District 9640, thanks to Richard Crandon and Merv Richens. We were once told that all hospital linen for the Port Moresby General Hospital came from Donations in Kind, that probably still applies. BOOKS - BOOKS AND MORE BOOKS! From Ironside Primary School, West Moreton Anglican College, Somerville House, State Library, RC Noosa and Phil Robinson, (D9630 RAWCS Chair). Thanks also to the many Rotarians that just drop them on the bench. THANKS FROM MADANG We take this time to appreciate and thank the Rotary Club of Madang for receiving the 17 under arm crutches, toilet seats, and a table through its Rotary Clubs in Australia Donations in Kind programe. The items received will be donated to people with disability. That s another two containers on the way! Mase Warel Administrator- Creative Self Help Centre, Madang SCRAP METAL AND WASTE PAPER No, please don t send any scrap metal to the DIK store, but on a re-cycle theme goods that are received and not suitable for dispatch to PNG-Solomon s, such as rusty hospital beds, broken desks and other metal items that have passed their use by date are broken down and taken to the scrap yard and that also goes for the volumes of scrap paper and cardboard boxes. It doesn t pay for a container but it does help pay for the sundry packing materials and the morning coffee when the teams come to pack containers. SPECTACLES Yes, we do send spectacles, after sorting and checking the condition they are repacked and sent in bulk to hospitals/clinics in PNG and the Solomon s. We do not have the capabilities to grade the specs and we leave this to the hospital/clinic making the donation to the end user. CRUTCHES We receive and send away a large number of crutches that come in from all hospitals. Why so many? Happy to be corrected, but I understand hospital crutches are a one user only item and even when returned are not passed on to the next patient. That s ok, we can take as many as are offerred.

2 TROLLIES AT THE DIK STORE When unloading a delivery of books, chairs or whatever it is so easy to move them into storage place when using the store trollies. The trollies are a well used item, so much so that the running gear of a discarded hospital bed with an upside down table on top makes a good trolley. USED STAMPS The sale of used stamps for DIK funding has been ongoing for some time now and stamps are dropped off at the DIK store with some regularity. They come to us in all manner of conditions, most ok, but many are damaged or trimmed too close The trimming of stamps as below gives a better presentation when offering them for sale, alternatively, let DIK do the trimming. NOTE! TRIMMING THE USED STAMPS 130 School desks from RC Surfers Paradise soon on their way to RC Honiara no thanks! just right! too close! If possible, leave a quarter of an inch or a 5 mm margin when trimming the stamps, stay clear of the perforations! THE DIK STORE GATE PADLOCKS. Of particular note to those with access to the combination lock...and THE FUNDING COMES IN! An additional $542 came from the Brisbane NW Cluster function; $380 for the sale of used stamps; $1,000 from RC Maleny, $1,200 from RC Albany Creek and RC Karana Downs $3,500. Not the biggest donation this month, but a young man (3 years?) gave me $1 when I was car park attendant at the Brookfield Show. I promised I would send some pencils to PNG for him with a little note to the receiver. BAPTIST UNION IN LAE Rotary Club of Lae are currently unable to receive containers. To send donations to the schools and hospitals in the Morobe area we sent a container to the Baptist Union who received and distributed the contents. Please note that the DIK store gate has four padlocks and to be effective three must be linked to the chain three in a row, allowing access by any one of the padlocks. Incorrect replacement of a padlock can bar access to a following key-holder. ANOTHER CRANDON DELIVERY A May delivery of twenty bags of hospital linen and along with these a pallet of books and baby clothes. Clothes you say? Yes, the only clothes we send are for very early babies and go direct to the Maternity Ward.

3 WHEELCHAIRS FOR KIDS When in Perth recently I called on Wheelchairs for Kids and was amazed at the professional way these volunteers go about making wheelchairs. They, Rotary and the Christian Brothers, started by building the chairs from old bicycle parts and over the years have moved away from the recycled cycles (I like that bit!) and have developed a low cost chair approved and suitable for use in developing countries Ambulance as delivered to RC Boroko (low running costs) We were asked by RC Boroko if it was possible to source an ambulance. I suppose we owe them an apology as this was all we could find. CONTAINERS TO PNG CLUBS As mentioned earlier we have almost come to the end of the Missing Containers Saga! These missing containers were mainly those sent to the Clubs by DIK and not returned to the Shipping Lines. To this can be added those sent by Clubs independent of DIK destined for the PNG Highlands with no concern for the return. It has been too easy for a Rotary Club anywhere in Australia to ignore the protocols when sending a container to PNG and due to the number sent from Brisbane all complaints on Rotary shipments have come back to DIK Northern Region, that s us! NAMBOUR HOSPITAL A phone call from a medical friend of Rotary, Mark Gallagher, found me walking into Aladdin s Cave at Nambour Hospital with President Murray Roach of RC Nambour. Hospital equipment, superceded or past it s use by date but still in immaculate condition is to be made available to DIK for sending overseas. Examination tables, patient hoists, operating tables, nurses cupboards and more, RC Nambour will deliver to our store and we will distribute as soon as we can. DON T TAKE THE MINI! I come to expect it these days! I went to the District Assembly and was cornered by RCs Nambour and Kingaroy who had three very large boxes for DIK full of medical supplies, spectacles and Kits for Kids. Fortunately it was not hospital beds and I could get them in my car (only just). Lucky I didn t take Ann s MINI Cooper! Aladdin s Cave at Nambour Hospital! Thanks fellows, goods were taken to the store on the way home. FEEDBACK IS IMPORTANT! A note to our friends receiving Donations. Gathering supplies, packing them and sending them off a container can be a satisfying project for the Rotary Clubs here in Queensland. However the project is not complete until word (and a picture?) comes back telling us how the health and education donations have been distributed and how well, or otherwise, the donations were received.

4 THURSDAY 30 MAY 2013 It was just one of those days at the DIK store in Durack, 14 Rotarians and Partners from Districts 9600, 9630 and 9640 turned up for another day for DIK...and what did they do? Took a full ute load of scrap paper to sale and on the way back called in at the State Library and picked up two pallets of Books. Unloaded 12 examination tables picked up from Logan. Checked and cleaned down a dozen wheeled walkers ready for sending away in June. Packed a pallet of books mainly for primary school. Set aside unsuitable books for pick up by Endeavour Foundation for their book sale. Packed medical supplies and spectacles received from RC Nambour and District Cut and baled waste cardboard boxes. Received a pallet of office supplies (files, file trays, clips, erasers etc.) Assembled and boxed birthing kits. Received 16 boxes of baby bundles for RC Madang Apologised to a lady caller that we do not have meeting premises for hire. Enjoyed the chat over a coffee or two at mid morning break.. ODDS and ENDS :- There is a CAT scan unit sitting at the store sent to us from Townsville and waiting shipment to Sri Lanka This is a project for RAWCS-DIK Sydney and we are holding it until Phillips Electrical are ready to install. :- DIK is talking to a new Men s Shed at Mt Gravatt where they will take in our wheelchairs that need attention rather than have us throw them away. :- We have a library of VHS and DVDs in the store tea room not suitable to send. Come and take your pick when rostered on for packing. No charge! :- No, we do not want your out-of-date TV! :- The coffee break is a big part of the Thursday morning DIK work where we catch up with what other Clubs are doing and when Des La Rance and his Surfers Paradise crew delivered 130 school desks all it cost us was a coffee and piece of cake to hear the news from the Gold Coast. :- Nurses unifiorms came in from the Health Dept., they were re-packed and will be on their way to RC Port Moresby 8 th June. ENDEAVOUR FOUNDATION To explain last month s comment re clothing. We do not accept clothing for a number of reasons, but perhaps the first is that our Tax/Customs agreement for PNG and the Solomon s is for Health and Education goods only. We have two choices for clothing that does come in, we send it to the BCC tip or we call in Endeavour Foundation. Endeavour also accept books for their book sales that we find not suitable for dispatch. BIRTHING KITS (ongoing!) Two of the ladies that assemble Birthing Kits for DIK to ship to PNG have visited PNG to follow up the receipt of the kits. Christine King, of QCWA, has visited the Port Moresby General Hospital. Birthing kits apart Christine was set back a little at the overall conditions. Del Cole who regularly supplies us with Baby Bundles went to Madang where most of her donations go to the hospitals through Marureen Hill. Thank you for your follow up ladies, there s nothing like checking it out yourself. Just a gentle reminder for 9630 Clubs, this is not a fund raiser but a DIK initiative.
