1 HEADSPACE MOUNT GAMBIER MONTHLY NEWSLETTER - AUGUST 2018 Pride in your stride Walk For The Homeless On Friday August 10, headspace team members Nick, Trudi and Youth Reference Group member Ellie, joined in with other Uniting Communities staff to Walk for the Homeless - Raising awareness for the local homeless population and their struggles. The walk started at the gates of Vansittart Park, along the main street and led to AC Care s Community Centre on Ferrers St for breakfast. Participants were invited to bring a spare pair of shoes to donate to AC Care. Beyond Carbon Neutral season activity - The staff at headspace are working hard on reducing their carbon footprint. We are constantly checking in to see where we can improve our behaviours to reduce waste, re-use and recycle anything at our centre. Our aim is to continue sharing the things we are doing to be more environmentally conscious, help raise awareness and show how easy it is to practice. Everyone can join in, starting from home, school, work or wherever: Reducing sticky-note usage and re-using old paper Starting to collect and recycle soft plastics Clearly labelling and colour coding bins for guest awareness Cutting down on plastic produce bags from supermarkets Using keep-cups when buying coffees at cafes Printing documents double sided and only printing when necessary headspace Mount Gambier gratefully acknowledges the financial and other support from Country SA PHN and the Australian Government Department of Health.

2 headspace attends Rotary Careers community event On Wednesday August 15, The Main Corner Complex held the tertiary information evening hosted by Grant High School. The evening included representatives from Flinders University, Uni SA, Deakin Uni, Tabor College, TAFE SA and the Grant District Council to answer any questions future school leavers had about university, TAFE, scholarships, internships, gap years, colleges and more. The evening also included a finance session held by the Senior Financial Planner from Sinclair Wilson Accounting & Business Advisors to discuss students options surrounding Centrelink and payments that are available to students when relocating for university. headspace Community Liaison Worker, Nick and Therapeutic Youth Worker, Ashleigh were there along with YRG members Elizabeth and Ellie to offer support, tips and information for young people feeling anxious about leaving school, moving town, worried about their ATAR or anything impacting on their career pathway journey. Bounce into headspace at the Library The Mount Gambier Library hosted their Youth Program for the month of August and headspace ran an event for Science Week called Bounce into headspace. 15 young people attended the session and engaged in making Bouncy Balls and Kinetic Sand. In typical science fashion, things got a little messy and some of the experiments did not quite work out!

3 Headcoach Launch On Saturday, August 25 headspace Mount Gambier launched Headcoach a campaign giving tips on how to maintain mental health and well being for young men. The event was held at Vansittart Park at the Western Border Football League Second Semi Final. The event included games involving skill and smarts, with the opportunity to win heaps of cool headspace merchandise whilst learning about the importance of mental health and spreading awareness. The activities were well received by lots of young people who attended. AFL footballer, Mason Redman from the Essendon Bombers came by the headspace tent appreciating the importance of young men maintaining their mental health and wellbeing. Stay on the look out for headcoach posters and events happening around town soon!

4 YOUTH AMBASSADORS - New Volunteer Vacancies Are you aged between and live in Mount Gambier? Are you passionate about mental health and educating other young people? The headspace Mount Gambier Youth Ambassador Program brings together a group of local volunteers aged who are passionate about mental health issues and public speaking to provide peer to peer education in the Mount Gambier area. Who are we looking for? We want applicants who are.. Aged Passionate about mental health Keen public speakers who have excellent communication skills Able to work effectively in a team and able to work independently Motivated, willing and committed to participating on an ongoing basis Available for presentations during school hours in 2018 Have valid drivers licence and access to own transport Have easy and regular access to internet and phone Youth Ambassadors work in pairs to deliver interactive headspace presentations to local school and community groups. The books feature over 50 tips on how to maintain your mental health and stay in a healthy headspace and include some incredible artwork on each page. Come in and check out the books in our waiting room.
