After today s meeting the Membership Committee, The Building and Equipment Committee, and the Community Services Committees met. There is a Board meeting on April 17. President William asked the membership for items of consideration as the agenda is still in the early planning stage. Volume 9, Issue 28 TODAY S PROGRAM State of the City Howard Lazarus, the Ann Arbor City Administrator, was introduced by our own Zach Ackerman, who is also on the Ann Arbor City Council. Howard spoke about Visioning when he said that the quality of life in a city is a perishable commodity. He said that if we don t plan for growth and have the right kinds of growth that we will wind up like many other cities that have become unaffordable for many people and that have congestion problems. Without the type of Zach Ackerman planning our City Council is trying to do you would begin to see the quality of life start to degrade. He said that Ann Arbor has recently, after approval by the voters, gone to a 4-year election cycle for Council Members. By cosmic accident, the years where we do the heavy lifting on the budget are off-election years so that we don t have to do it under the looming presence of an oncoming election. Howard also said that we are in great fiscal shape. Our budget for physical year 2019 was balanced and passed last year so that all we have to talk about are changes, modifications, and things that go bump in the night that we don t expect. Howard then presented us with bullet points that described the shape of the city s budget all of this information is available on the city s website. He said that one thing that is interesting is that the city only gets about 25% of every property tax dollar paid by property owners. He said that the city is limited as to how much that they can raise taxes each year and that that is not a bad thing as it forces the city to be more efficient and cost conscious. A new budget item this year is the rebate the city will Howard Lazarus receive from Washtenaw County sometime between next December and early spring, That rebate will come from the county millage that was passed by the voters last year. This millage was for community mental health and public safety. Since Ann Arbor has its own Police Department, we will get a rebate for that portion that goes to local law enforcement. The amount comes to about 2.2 million dollars and will grow in future years as revenues grow. Council has decided to put 40% of the rebate money into affordable housing, 40% into climate action, and 20% into pedestrian safety. Mr. Lazarus said that will help us address some initiatives that are in the City s overall master plan and sustainability framework that we couldn t get to before. He said that the city s total budget is just under $400 million. That figure includes all of city spending, including capital expenditures. He said that we have a great bond rating from Standard & Poor s of Double A Plus. This year the typical impact of tax and utility increases will be about $3.00 a month in property taxes and $5.50 a month in city utilities. Part of the utility cost increase is to pay for future renovations. NEXT WEEK S PROGRAM... April 16 The Unpredictable Adventures of Operating a Bed & Breakfast. Speaker: Pat Maturka. HOSPITALITY Kathy Barden-Perlberg said she had a couple of sad things to report: She had been informed by President William that Honorary Member Bill Browning had passed away on March 23rd. Many members remember Bill, and Kathy asked for a moment of silence. She also informed us that Sue Dailey was in surgery at that very moment and that it would be a long surgery. Sue went into the U of M Hospital Sunday morning. Kathy asked if anyone had an update on Lloyd Kitchens. Lynne Lande said that he is at home and is receiving hospice there. Lynne had a message from Lloyd s wife, Elizabeth, that things were settling down into a routine and that their children have gone back to their homes. They would appreciate getting cards, text messages, or s. On a positive note, Kathy was happy to say that Gary Elling was present and she welcomed him back. Kathy also noted that Pat Materka was here. Kathy said that Pat had been a longtime volunteer at our downtown location. Kathy welcomed back Sherry Springer from his winter in Texas and she noted that Clarence Dukes was back. ANNOUNCEMENTS... The speaker will be a victim of Larry Nasser and her mother. If you are interested in going, please RSVP to Ms. Gupta, by April 13, at jyoti@washtenawchildren.org. President William said that there are only 21 more days before the Scholarship Award Day on the 30th. He said that parking will be very tight on that day and asked all members to park in the back of our parking lot to make room for our guests. There will not be Happy Dollars on that day. President William told us that the Kiwanis International Convention starts on June 28 in Las Vegas and there was a Spring Divisional meeting last Saturday. (See Charlie Phibbs report on the Spring Divisional on page 3) Alan Burg thanked Charlie Phibbs, Past Lieutenant Governor of the old Division 10, for the guidance that he gave us. 3 Volume 9, Issue 28 FINES... Dan Dever said that a club member showed up and had to ask what we charge for our weekly lunch. Dan did not want to identify the specific individual so he proposed this fine on all members named Gary. There was a second and some discussion. The proposal was voted on and President William declared, for the 100th time during his tenure as president, that it had passed unanimously. Dan Dever, later in the meeting, proposed a fine on Peter Schork for the socks that Peter was wearing. It quickly became obvious that the club members present did not have any enthusiasm for this proposal and it failed to garner support. HAPPY DOLLARS... Dale Leslie was happy for the Pancake Breakfast that the Ypsilanti Kiwanis Club will hold at the Ypsilanti Methodist Church on this coming Saturday, April 14th, from 7:30 to 1:00 PM. $8.00 for Adults and $4.00 for kids. Bob Carr was happy for the Community Services Committee and for 33 applications for up to $90,000. Ken Hillenburg was happy for having just had his birthday and for the success of our club members using our computerized Sign-Up Genius for scheduling Thrift Sale Volunteer times. He offered to help those members and volunteers that could use assistance in using this system. Jane Talcott was happy and thankful for those who had contributed to the Summer Campership fund. Clarence Dukes was happy for having known two people who, unfortunately, have recently passed away: Bill Storey, who was 95 Clarence thought that he was a conservative until he met Bill Storey. He said Bill was a long-time member of the Chelsea Kiwanis club and may other organizations such as being on the Chelsea School Board, local hospital s Board of Directors, and Chelsea s Village Council. He was pilot in the Marine Corps in WWII and later he was the director of Chelsea s Civil Defense in the 1950 s. Bill Browning who was 87 Among other things, Bill taught 6th grade at Haisley Elementary School for ten years. Clarence s daughter was in one of those classes and later went on to babysit Bill s kids. Sherry Springer was happy for bumping into someone while wintering in Texas. He was at the pool reminiscing about the old days when a contingent from the club would travel to Blenheim, Canada in the winter for a round of curling versus the Kiwanis Club of Blenheim. In the summer, members from the Blenheim club visited Ann Arbor to play golf. As Sherry was reminiscing, a stranger at the pool overheard his conversation. By cosmic accident, that person remembered those exchanges between the two Kiwanis Clubs. Sherry told me later that on one trip to Blenheim the Kiwanis bus stopped at the Canadian border to purchase discounted beverages. As their bus approached Blenheim, a patrolman pulled the bus over and came aboard. He acted fierce at first but it turned out this patrolman was the President of that local Kiwanis Club and all had a good laugh. Larry Dittmar was happy to review upcoming concerts at the U of M There will be a band performance at Hill Auditorium on Monday night. On Tuesday there will be a trombone recital at 8:00 at the Earl V. Moore Bldg., admittance is free. On Thursday at 2:10 PM Composition Class Showing at the Betty Pease Studio Theater, no ticket required. On Friday the University Symphony Orchestra will perform at Hill, no ticket is required. In addition, on Saturday the Chamber Choir will perform at 8:00 PM in celebration of the retiring Jerry Blackstone. Maryann Knox, a guest from the Chelsea Kiwanis Club, said that she was happy to be at our club and that she was impressed by how we do things. She gave thanks to Max Ziegler and Don Kossick for showing her around our building, and to Lynne Lande for inviting her. She said that she was just happy to be there. Dan Burroughs was happy to request club members to consider joining the Children & Youth Services Committee where they would assist in reviewing and vetting the grant application process. He said that this committee will meet next Monday at 10:45, right before our regular meeting. Any club member that is interested is invited to attend. Garry Donner was happy to announce that his mother turned 95 recently and attended four Birthday parties. Page 3 Known worldwide as the place for the funkiest gift. SUPER-INTERCLUBS Chelsea will be hosting a Super-interclub on Monday, April 16 at 6pm at the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital. Dave Drake insists that all members attend. There will also be a Super-interclub at South Lyon on June 11. Charlie Phibbs said that there will be a Super Inter-Club meeting at the Manchester club on May 23. He will get more details on that. The Ypsilanti Club will have a Super Inter-Club meeting in June on the 6th or on the 13th. They expect that Debbie Dingle will be their featured speaker. Saline will have a Super Inter-Club meeting on 18th of June. SPRING DIVISIONAL NEWS Charlie Phibbs said that he had the privilege of going to two Spring Divisionals last week one in Dearborn in the morning and to ours in the afternoon. It was a long day and there are a couple of new things coming up in the District. One is that we have gotten a charity poker license from the State of Michigan. This could be a fundraiser for clubs in our district. In addition, an Entertainment Book with coupons to stores and restaurants will be offered. The District has partnered with Platinum Card Royalties in this endeavor. This includes an App for your phone that will alert you to discounts in your area. The entertainment card costs $20. Kiwanis gets $10 of those dollars. $4 goes to SLP, $3 goes to the club that sold the card, $2 goes to the District, and $1 goes to the Lieutenant Governor fund to help support their travels. The executive director said she will make a $1.00 donation to the Eliminate Project for each card sold. Charlie also said that the Michigan District Foundation will do a raffle. All Kiwanians in the Michigan District will get to sell tickets. Packages of 10 tickets will be mailed from the Michigan Foundation. Tickets are $5 each with a $5,000 cash prize. Charlie suggested that all the tickets get pooled together and that the club set up a committee to sell the tickets. Charlie further reported that our Club and Foundation were honored and received awards and recognition for at the Spring Divisional. These awards are from the Michigan District and Kiwanis International as follows: Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation Award for 100% Participation Sponsorship of K-Kids, Key Club, Circle K and Aktion Club Salvation Army Bell Ringing Outstanding Club Award from Kiwanis International Distinguished Club Award from Kiwanis International Distinguished Club Secretary Award (Kathy Wilder) Distinguished Club President Award (Alan Burg) THRIFT SALE RESULTS Greg Meisner announced that a graph was distributed to each table that shows weekly sales totals for this year. The sales results from this past weekend are included although at $15,399 they are not complete as the tally is still being totaled. He said that as our Treasurer, he is not responsible for these results and that he just collects the data; that congratulations should go out to all of the Club members and volunteers that actually worked at the sale. The graph shows big surge in sales at the middle of January which was when all of the departments were officially open, up and running. When the budget was set up for the year, they had projected sales averaging $11,500 a week but that since January we have been averaging $14,414 a week. If that trend continues, we will end the year with a total sales of $690,000 which is well over the budgeted projection of $600,000. An updated, complete graph is included on page 11 of this newsletter. FLIPPIN NEWS... The Flippin for Kiwanis! project is once again underway and customers, members, and volunteers can sign up to participate. Marianne D Angelo is the chair of this fun project.
