Each year at the national Leadership Training Conference, the new chairperson s theme is unveiled. In recent years, we had Make a Difference and Making Connections. This year s theme is Making it Count, a theme that fits well with prior years. I plan to make this year count, and I encourage all members to do so. Some ways of Making it Count are: attending one of our excellent educational programs or networking events both locally and throughout Region 2; attain your HFMA certification, join a committees, contribute to the newsletter, or attend social events Any option you choose will help you make connections with other chapter members, and help you grow both personally and professionally. You get the most out of membership when you are an active member and can take advantage of what the local chapter has to offer. At the end of this year, I sincerely hope all members can say that they really made this year count! 1

3 Summer-2009 HEALTHCARE HUMOR.ZIP IT! After weeks of medical treatment, my doctor became concerned about some redness around my waist, so he sent me to a specialist. When the doctor entered the examination room, he studied my chart, then looked at me sitting in the chair. Should I take my clothes off? I asked. No need to, he said. I already know the problem. Your pants are too tight. IT S HOT! Even though it was warm ouside, the heat was on full blast in my office at the hospital. So I asked our nursing unit secretary to get someone to fix it. This was a one-man job, so I could not figure why two guys showed up until I was handed the maintenance request form. It read: Head nurse is hot. TAKE IT! A man goes to a psychiatrist. The doctor diagnoses him as a kleptomaniac. Really? the guy says. Is there anything I can take for it? 6 Summer HFMA Region 2 Mini LTC By Loralee Voelker The 2009 HFMA Region 2 Mini LTC was held this year in Niagara Falls at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, hosted by the WNY and Hudson Valley HFMA chapters. It was two days full of both entertaining and educational events with over 60 members in attendance. A trip to the Cave of the Winds started the conference and allowed many who had never seen the Niagara Falls experience some wet fun. A reception and dinner followed with guest speaker, Robert Reiss. Mr. Reiss is Host of the CEO Show, a syndicated radio show which interviews top CEO s throughout the country with emphasis on customer service. A trip to the Seneca Niagara Casino topped the night for many members. Monday began bright and early with breakfast and introductions. Rick White, FHFMA, President, Northeastern NY, did the warm up for the morning sessions. Rick is always able to get a laugh from the crowd and start the morning with a smile. The message from National was presented by Rick Parker, Chapter Advancement Team. The audience learned effective ways to use the various resources on the National HFMA website. Jackie Stroh, President, Clarion Call, LLC, began the Leadership Skills Series I with topics that included Time Management and Delegation and Accountability. Scott Stockman, Professional Advantage, Vital Alliance, led the Leadership Skills Series II, focusing on Conducting an Effective Meeting and Efficient Minutes. Newsletter, Education and National Reporting. Leadership Skills Series III, led by Robert Reiss, focused on Public Speaking. This session was interactive with audience participants. After a game of catch, groups formed to spell out inspirational quotes. Mr. Reiss stressed the fundamentals of public speaking, including body language, structure and confidence. Eventually every audience member stood up and spoke for 30 seconds about themselves. Another great education day for HFMA! Jenn and Daria at the Opening Reception Robert Reiss, Host of the CEO Show Scott Stockton, Leadership Skills II Break-Out Sessions included: Presidents/President Elects, Membership, 6
