PRESIDENT S LETTER Dear Friends, On behalf of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) and the men and women of the armed forces whose lives are improved because of you, thank you for your support. You make the crucial work we do possible. In fiscal year 2018, IFHF impacted thousands of lives through treatment provided at Intrepid Spirit Centers built on military bases around the nation. The Invisible Wounds of War: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), continue to plague hundreds of thousands of American military personnel. To help our service members fight The War Within, and with your support, this year we proudly opened two new Intrepid Spirit Centers, one at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, and the other at Camp Pendleton, California. These centers function as Gymnasiums for the Brain, delivering a groundbreaking interdisciplinary model of care to the treatment of TBI and PTS. Following treatment, more than 90% of patients are able to continue on Active Duty in the armed forces. More information on this innovative development is included along with other highlights from this past year. So far, IFHF has raised $75 million and built seven Intrepid Spirit Centers located across the nation where thousands of service members receive care each year. Three additional, critically-needed facilities remain to be built, at a total cost of $42 million. Of this, IFHF has raised $6 million, leaving $36 million to be raised to complete this vitally important project. Behind every fact in this report there is a service member, a family member, or a medical professional. Each sentence tells a story of sacrifice and perseverance, and every donation represents the unparalleled passion of those who stand behind IFHF s mission. Most importantly, 100% of donations to IFHF goes to building Intrepid Spirit Centers, as our Board of Directors underwrites all administrative costs. To hear the stories of those who have been helped in their own words, please visit our website at org and click on YouTube. Your generosity returns thousands of our wounded heroes to the life they want and deserve. Thank you for sharing in this crucial effort. Most sincerely, David A. Winters President, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund
INTREPID FALLEN HEROES FUND Our Mission: The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) serves United States military personnel experiencing the Invisible Wounds of War: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS). When our Servicemen and women return from the battlefield, we help them fight The War Within, by building world class, advanced treatment centers providing the best TBI and PTS care, enabling them to continue to serve on Active Duty and enjoy a productive life.
INTREPID SPIRIT CENTERS Since 2000, close to 400,000 service members have been diagnosed with TBI according to the U.S. Department of Defense. TBI accounts for 36% of injuries to military personnel. Amputations account for 10%. In response to this critical need, in 2010, IFHF built the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. As the military s primary facility for research, diagnosis and treatment of TBI and PTS, NICoE incorporates a groundbreaking interdisciplinary model of care. To further extend NICoE s high level of care, in 2012, IFHF began building a series of ten satellites to NICoE, named Intrepid Spirit Centers, located on military bases across the country. This allows service members to be treated closer to home so their families can participate, as their support is crucial to effective TBI care. More than 90% of service members treated at NICoE and the Intrepid Spirit Centers are able to continue on Active Duty and enjoy a full life. Patients at Intrepid Spirit Centers come from all branches of the armed forces and receive comprehensive, interdisciplinary and individually tailored evaluations and treatment. Integrative health techniques, such as music and art therapy programs, help service members fully understand the effects of their injuries while activating specific neuro-healing processes. Seven Intrepid Spirit Centers are in operation and three more are scheduled to be built. The completed network will span the nation.
INTREPID SPIRIT CENTERS
HIGHLIGHTS FROM FISCAL YEAR 2018 (May 2017 April 2018) IFHF s most important accomplishment was the opening of two new Intrepid Spirit Centers, our first on the West Coast. The center at Camp Pendleton, California opened on April 4. The center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington started receiving patients in November 2017 and was ceremonially opened on April 5. These new facilities are now bringing the most advanced TBI and PTS care to more of our nation s servicemen and women. Our great friends at NAPA Auto Parts continued their amazing support of IFHF. For the sixth consecutive year, NAPA s Get Back and Give Back program allowed customers, store owners and suppliers to support IFHF through a combination of product purchases, rebates and donations. This nationwide year-round effort raised over $2.3 million. Since launching this effort with IFHF in 2012, NAPA Auto Parts has raised $10 million toward building Intrepid Spirit Centers. On September 9 and 10, TeamExtreme, a group of dedicated volunteers who use their passion for extreme sports to raise funds to benefit IFHF, engaged in a grueling 24-hour relay race along New York City s Hudson River. Through sponsorships and other support, this exciting event raised over $550,000 for the Intrepid Spirit Center project. IFHF leveraged Giving Tuesday on November 28 as a social media marketing event. This presented a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and support for the Intrepid Spirit Centers. More than $26,000 was raised in this 24-hour period. IFHF leaders Arnold Fisher and General Richard Cody, USA (Ret.) joined the second summit of Intrepid Spirit Center directors in February Held at NICoE, the gathering allowed the center directors to share their progress and exchange information on how each delivers care to their specific patient populations. Such summits are an important tool in continuing to refine and enhance the treatments and therapies delivered at the Intrepid Spirit Centers.
