GENERAL MEETING --- July 25, 2010 The meeting was called to order by Vice President David Rapp at 1:00pm with a flag salute. In that there was no business to conduct, a motion was made, seconded and approved to dispense with a meeting. Contact Cyndie Melvin Hill passed away on July 14, Mel was a long time member. Did a lot of Lapidary work. He went on field trips and created beautiful pieces of jewelry and displayed these at our yearly Gem and Mineral Shows. He gave a helping hand at set-up time at our shows. Mel brought his grandson Justin Johnson to the club as a junior. Justin also created and displayed at the shows. [I did not learn of this before the Bulletin was printed in July. [See Northwest Newsletter - Aug for more info. on shows etc.] FIELD TRIP New Field Trip Leaders -- Mike Shaw ph June Robbins resigned as Field Trip Director at the picnic last month, due to plans to move to the West Coast. She asked Mike Shaw, Krissanne Gray and Cyndie Doppler to take her place. She deserves a big thank you from the club for all she's done getting field trips organized. Old field trip schedule is obsolete A new Schedule will be presented at the August meeting. We will have 2 field trips in September and at least one in October, weather permitting.

4 VOL. 51 ROCK ROLLERS AUG Page 3 ROCK ROLLERS PICNIC -- Mildred Scheel Sixty plus Rock Rollers and friends enjoyed a fun filled afternoon at Browns Park on Sunday, July 25 th. Chairman for the event, Cari Thrapp was unable to attend due to the illness of her father, but she was a major part of the planning. Co-chair, Mildred Scheel stepped in to MC activities of the day. Special thanks go to our chefs, Mike Shaw, who served up delicious hamburgers and hot dogs, and Pam and Dennis Hicks for the tasty salmon. We thank Dave Rapp for purchasing the door prizes and for providing an extra grill. Bonnie and Leon Agee provided several extra tables, which were much appreciated. And, of course, we thank all members who brought all the other wonderful food in such generous quantity. Following the meal, Marian Knack conducted the drawings for door prizes. Becky Gillespie headed up the Bingo, M J Brown, Pinochle and Dennis Hicks, kid's activities. Very special thanks to those and all who participated. Dennis also picked up supplies from the club house. Kathleen Govett was a big help in setting up and take-down, as well as returning items to the clubhouse. We're not sure who arranged the weather, but, while this was one of the hottest days of the year, a gentle breeze kept everyone quite comfortable! And we were all thrilled to see Bonnie Cotant and her daughter, Jo Ann. [Thank you Mildred]. I will have a sample there for you too see. [Please do not let the sample grow legs and walk off the table and go to your house.] Conservation & Legislation Chair, John Martin Commends John Wright for his work. John Wright s report to SFMS Board of Directors. May 1, 2010 At present National Forest Service area managers and supervisory personnel are still working to revise policies regarding recreational activities in National forests with many aspects being reviewed and modified. Expanded, more detailed policies are expected to be published and placed into effect in a few areas later this year, but in many areas it may require several years. According to published accounts by the Forest Service, In the interim, the current rockhounding policy will remain place. I.e.: [1] Recreational Rockhounding may take place at areas where minerals are loose and free on the surface, and the activity is not restricted by permit or in an area designated as closed for this activity. Mineral collecting must be with non-mechanical equipment and result in no significant ground or stream disturbance. [2] Recreational Gold Panning is allowed where minerals are in federal ownership, using non-mechanized equipment, where no ground disturbance takes place, and where streams are not designated as closed to this activity. [3] Metal detectors may only be used with clearance from the area forest manager. NOTE: Arrow heads, stone tools, and chips left from making them are considered antiques and covered under sub-paragraphs [g] & [h], 36 C, Code of Federal regulations - Title 36: Parks, Forests, and Public Property [December, 2005], Chapter ll - Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Part Prohibitions, Subpart a - General Prohibitions, and the Antiquities Act of The paleontological Resources Preservation Act is now law and while it only protects and prevents the collecting of vertebrate fossils on federal lands, be aware that most Forest Service law enforcement officers do not know or care about the difference in fossils. You should also be aware that many areas of the country, vertebrate fossils are protected by state laws and collecting them even on private property is prohibited. In most areas Forest Service managers leave the issuing of citations up to the discretion of law enforcement officers and the courts determine innocence or guilt.
