1 AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE WEEK AMERICAN INDIAN VOICES: SPEAKING TO THE FUTURE LECTURE SERIES FREE AND THE PUBLIC IS WELCOME Monday, April 4th Ernie Stensgar: Coeur d Alene Tribal Member and Vice- Chairman of the Coeur d Alene Tribal Council. Ernie is the first tribal leader in the Idaho Hall of Fame, and is a Purple Heart recipient. Tuesday, April 5th Norma Jean Peone: First, and only, woman to be elected Vice-Chair of Coeur d Alene Tribal Council. Norma was also Chair of the Health Board for the tribe s Benewah Medical Center. She worked with the Coeur d Alene Tribe s Department of Education in the 1980s and again since Wednesday, April 6th WHEN April 4 8, 2016 All Lectures Begin At 7:00 p.m. WHERE North Idaho College Molstead Library Todd Hall 875 West Garden Ave., Coeur d Alene, Idaho Margo Aragon: Professor, Walla Walla Community College; Northwest Indian College; Chair of the Idaho Humanities Council; writer and document film-maker. Married to NASA Astronaut John Herrington of the Chickasaw tribe. Thursday, April 7th Howard Funke: Chippewa Tribal Member, leading attorney and expert in American Indian law, representing tribes throughout the country. 2 Ernie Stensgar Monday April 4 th, 2016 at 7:00p.m. Lecture Topic: American Indian Leadership Ernie Stensgar is a member of the Coeur d Alene Tribe. Mr. Stensgar served as Chair of the Coeur d Alene Tribal Council from and was at the forefront of efforts to bring gaming to the reservation. He also served as President of the Affiliated Tribes of the Northwest and Vice-Chairman of the National Congress of American Indians. He is the first tribal leader to be named to the Idaho Hall of Fame and received the Bayard Rustin Award for his work in advancing human rights. A Marine and Vietnam veteran, Ernie received the Purple Heart for his service. He created the Coeur d Alene Warrior Society and serves as the Commander of the Joseph R. Garry American Legion Post #5. Ernie Stensgar has five adult children, 27 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
3 NORMA JEAN PEONE Tuesday April 5 th, 2016 at 7:00p.m. Lecture Topic: American Indian Education Norma Jean Peone is a member of the Coeur d Alene Tribal Council. Norma grew up on the Spokane Reservation but has lived on the Coeur d Alene Reservation since She was elected to serve on the Coeur d Alene Tribal Council where she served a total of 21 years. Her tenure on the Tribal Council includes two years as Vice Chair, the first woman elected to be Vice-Chair of the Tribal Council. She also was Chair of the Health Board for the Coeur d Alene Tribe s Benewah Medical Center, member of the NW Portland Indian Health Board and honored as Board Member of the Year. Norma received her bachelor s degree in General Studies from Lewis Clark State College and is passionate about her work in higher education. She worked with the Coeur d Alene Tribe s Department of Education in the 1980s and again since The seventh of nine children, Norma has one daughter and three grandsons.
4 MARGO ARAGON Wednesday April 6 th, 2016 at 7:00p.m. Lecture Topic: American Indian Education and STEM Margo Aragon is a writer and author of books and essays about Native culture and community. Recently she was selected to be the Chair of the Idaho Humanities Council Board of Directors. She and her husband, Dr. John B. Herrington (the world s first Indigenous astronaut) are the owners of Herrington Aerospace Limited, Co., a consulting business that provides services to the aerospace world and Native American education.
5 HOWARD FUNKE Thursday April 7 th, 2016 at 7:00p.m. Lecture Topic: American Indian Law Howard Funke is an enrolled member of the Keeweenaw Bay Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. He was born and raised on his Reservation located in Michigan s upper Peninsula. Howard has been representing Indian Tribes as an attorney for the past 36 years. He has also served as a Tribal Chairman, Tribal Judge and Idaho State senator. Howard has been a Tribal Attorney for the Coeur d Alene Tribe for the past 26 years. He has represented them on many issues, including: Gaming, Lake Coeur d Alene ownership, Clean up of Coeur d Alene Basin mining contamination, Clean up and building of the Trail of the Coeur d Alene s bike trail, Breach of Trust claims against the United States, Federal relicensing of Avista s five dams in the Spokane River, and Coeur d Alene/Spokane River Basin water rights adjudication.
