We had many of classes scheduled for the JGMS Learning Center in June, including some new offerings. Cheryl Ashley and myself are introducing a Mixed Media Circle that will be held monthly to start. This class will be all about your favorite craft or expertise and will include assistance from Cheryl and Harriet. In the past we had a class called the Knitters Circle with knitting as the focus but quickly evolved into other areas of interest such as Bead Weaving. Each Member brought with them something that they were willing to share with others. Some had very little to share but great enthusiastic attitudes to learn something new or to visit with our group. The areas of interest are beading, weaving, seed beading, bead applicate and more. Knitting (we like socks), crochet, and sharing recipes is encouraged too. Cabbing will hopefully also be available for those who have been certified to work independent. Enameling will be available with and accent on different. Some sewing projects, maybe some quilting, felting, macramé or tatting. The JGMS Cookbook was started with the circle and was never completed but would definitely make for a great fundraiser could take it to completion as a member of the Mixed Media Circle. Maybe even complete for the JGMS show this coming September. Other areas of interest under consideration are herbs, miniature painting, paper beads, any many more. What is your interest? Are you willing to share your expertise? Would you like to learn more about that special project you always wanted to do? Then maybe the JGMS Mixed Media Circle is for you. 3 Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society General Meeting Minutes June 2018 Meeting called to order at 7:10 P.M. Pledge said. New members and guests were recognized. Skipp Titus moved to accept minuets as published in the newsletter. Seconded by Jeanie S. Motion carried. Upcoming Events: o Movie night o Silent auction: There will be a box on the table for donations for the silent auction to be held at July meeting. Old Business o Homer Barrs spoke on by-laws dissolution issue. Issue is still tabled. o May Mini Show: Jason Hamilton gave a report. Turnout was low. New Business: o SFMS meeting coming up this coming weekend. It will be at Tulles Museum. o Tim Smeggil received a First Place Award from SFMS for the 2018 Website Contest. He received a plaque and a certificate. o Field Trips: Hogg Mine on Saturday, July 28, LaGrange, GA. June 23, 2018 Coon Creek Science Center in TN. o Russ Fisette spoke on building maintenance. o The Annual Steak Dinner will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2018, 6 p.m. at the JGMS Learning Center Provided is hand-cut ribeye steaks and a baked potato bard. The cost is $12 per person Please bring a side or dessert There will be games, and a very cool raffle! Tickets are $5 for 3 tickets. 4 Don t Forget! your JGMS Summer Silent Auction will be July 5 th. Donations are needed now. Bring donations to the workshop any time and drop them off in the Silent Auction Donation Box in the Library. SFMS Report The second SFMS Meeting was held at the Tellus Museum in Cartersville, Ga. on June 9th, "Getting the Word Out", was one of the main topics discussed at the meeting. Clubs need to know what SFMS is and what it means to the individual Clubs. The SFMS is an organization that conducts business in and for 10 states in the Southeast United States. The purpose of SFM is to provide Club insurance for Club Show and give information concerning Field trips thru the Dixie Mineral Council, Provide Program videos, and other relevant information to Rock Collectors. The SFMS, " Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc." is composed of a Board of Directors, State Directors and many other Chairman positions. The purpose of the SFMS is to Serve the Clubs in the Southeast and provide information about current situations in the Rock Collecting arears of the United States in general. SFMS is a member of The American Federation, of which there are seven members. The SFMS will be hoisted by JGMS this year In addition, The International Sand Collectors Society will be Joining us this year at the JGMS annual Fall Show Sept , The Show will be held at the Morocco Temple located at 3800 St. Johns Bluff Rd South, Jacksonville, Florida, SFMS President Craig Hamilton Upcoming Movie Schedule The 3 rd Thursday of every month at 7:00pm we offer free movies and popcorn. Our Youth Group also meets at 6:30pm on the 3 rd Thursday of each month to have some fun. July o Tanzanite - The One Generation Gemstone o Corning Museum of Glass - Beadmaking with Kristina Logan Greetings JGMS Members, I would like to offer a daytime faceting class (Noon till 3pm - or - 1pm to 4pm - students choice) on Thursday June 28th. I know this is short notice, but I had interest in this week s class and I'm going to try it. If you wish to take the class call me at Students will be limited to the number of machines we have. 6 Mining Around America Greetings Rock Hounds! Earlier this month, Timothy and Carolyn Smeggil visited the Sterling Mine and Museum of Fluorescence in Ogdensburg, New Jersey. The tour included a walk through a gem and mineral museum with many unique and beautiful specimens. In addition, the museum had many examples of the clothing, tools and the life of miners when the mine was still active up until the mine closed in Next was a guided walking tour of the mine in the lowest level since the mine is non-operating and the water sitting in the levels above are no longer being pumped out. We were able to view many tools, natural mineral deposits and settings that the miners used for various jobs. At the end of the tour, we went into the Museum of Fluorescence where the minerals are shown under a black light reveling their fluorescence. The specimens varied in size and color. It was a marvelous display and a treat for your senses. We purchased some minerals that will be loaned to JGMS once our Fluorescence Room is up and running. See pictures below!
