2 NEWSLETTER Welcome JGMS Members to Please make sure that you have received the Calendar of Events listing for JGMS We have tried to have quite a few diverse activities for fun as well as learning. The JGMS Instructors have been hard at work creating new and exciting classes for the Membership. Glass, Silver, Casting, Mold Making, Metals, are among the few areas that are in the process of expansion. COPs has been very busy as Craig Hamilton has many Public and Private Duval County Schools along with the four surrounding counties yet to visit for the school year. Craig always needs help with COPs and there is nothing special required to help except for a smiling face, the love of rocks and sharing with a few inquisitive 4 th graders. JGMS is and always has been the product of Her Membership. She now has become one of the largest Clubs / Societies in the Union and has acquired this position with- in the past 3 years with approximately 125 members, a dream, and a blessing to over 425members today. Everyone in the organization is working from a volunteer position to provide others with the opportunity to learn, have fun and hopefully want to give back to others. The Building alone was not a gift, The equipment, most of which is new was not a gift for the exception of 1 cabbing machine and a couple of kilns, all under the heading of Grants. Members have supported some of the needs with their personal equipment that was taking up space in their garage and is now being shared by their friends who have the same interests as themselves. Business requirements, dinners (food), decorations, painting, Education, etc. all need help. Most of the Chairpersons are doing the work alone with very little support. Those folks are beginning to not have any fun or be able to take any classes as they have jobs, families, other responsibilities as well as JGMS. We need each Committee to have 3-4-members to include the Chairperson. So please check your available time to give back a little bit a very deserving organization after all: as a Member in Good Standing The Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society belongs to you Respectfully, Harriet Rose Thank you, Harriet Rose Henrirose07@comcast.net Cell/txt: EXECUTIVE BOARD Harriet Rose, President Henrirose07@comcast.net Russ Fisette, President Elect rfisette1@gmail.com Heather Ferman, Vice President heatherfbeads@aol.com Anne Lanier, Secretary Alanier821@aol.com Deborah Ritter, Treasurer daraz13@aol.com Jacksonville Gem and Mineral Society

6 STONECUTTER'S CORNER January 2018 Mark Jordana, a member of the club since 2015, has volunteered to provide a brief discussion of a different rock each month for the newsletter. Mark is a retired Florida-licensed Professional Geologist (PG). He began cutting and polishing stones as a hobby about 10 years ago, which has evolved into a small business, Jordana Stone Design, which he runs with his wife Gail in St. Augustine, Florida. CARNELIAN Carnelian is a semi-precious stone consisting or an orange to reddish-orange variety of chalcedony. Although more commonly used today, carnelian is a 16 th century corruption of an earlier word cornelian used since Roman times. The name is derived from the Kornel type of cherry due to its red color. (Orange Carnelian) (Red Carnelian) Carnelian is similar to the stone sard, which is typically a darker reddish color; however, there is not a rigidly defined distinction between the two stones, and the names are sometimes used interchangeably. It is typically a solid color, but can also be banded, and therefore would be classified as both carnelian and agate. (Rough Carnelian) Carnelian is comprised predominantly of quartz; however, the distinctive red to orange color is due to the presence of iron oxide. The micro-crystalline structure results in a brilliant shine on polished stones. Given the high presence of quartz, carnelian has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Carnelian occurs worldwide, and is most commonly found in Brazil, Russia, India, Germany, and at locations in the western US.

7 Carnelian is one of the oldest known gemstones, widely used by the Romans, and even carried as a talisman by ancient Babylonians and Greeks. It has been carved to produce intaglio jewelry, and produces beautiful cabochon and free-form stone jewelry. Believed to restore vitality and motivation, stimulate creativity, and protect against negativity.
