Jones, CPM IREM Columbus President Greetings! I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and were able to relax and find time for fun! Our chapter stayed active with several fun events. We kicked off the summer with the Past President s meeting in June where Don Wilkerson, IREM SVP, was able to join us and get acquainted with Columbus. In July, we hosted the Clippers Game and backpack drive on a hot, but fun day! The 10th annual golf outing in August experienced some rain challenges and had to be moved back a couple of weeks, but the end result was a great day of golf, networking and comradery. Near and dear to my heart was the 2nd annual Great (Amazing) Race in September. All of the teams appeared to have a great time as they stretched their minds and bodies. In August, I was able to attend the Region 6 regional conference in Cleveland where we participated in discussions on corporate outreach with Russ Salzman, IREM CEO; Kim Collins, IREM Indy chapter president, and I presented a session on chapter succession plan- (Continued on Page 2)

2 ning; we enjoyed dinner at the House of Blues and the next morning participated in a session on hiring the right team members. Later this month, Brent Howard, Past President, Aaron Dorsch, incoming Chapter President, and I will be attending the IREM Fall Education Conference in San Diego where we will be representing our Chapter. We will be joined by Lori Tillis and Anthony Tynan, both of Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing. As we look forward to the months ahead, I am again amazed at how fast an IREM Chapter presidency flies. It never seems like enough time to accomplish everything, however, my Chapter 42 Presidency 2.0 will be my last as I pass the baton to Aaron Dorsch. The goals that I spelled out last December at the installation dinner were to focus on membership, education and participation. Despite progress, more work needs to be done on all three of these fronts. We need to spread the IREM word to our peers in real estate here in Central Ohio in hopes that they too will see the benefits of what IREM can do for them.as CPM s, ARM s, AMO s, and associate members. The materials that Russ provided in August at the Regional Conference in Cleveland are great tools for any and all of us to use when reaching out. Let me know if you need some copies. We will be hosting an Ethics course on November 11th, taught by our very own Lori Tillis. I urge all that need this course to sign up. I encourage the chapter leadership to continue to focus on education in the coming year. We are excited to have some new faces that are eager to get involved in leading our chapter next year via directorships or committee memberships. These include Judy Chapmon, our newest director for 2017; Julie Pickens and Laurie Rushevics have both indicated a desire to work on committees. It really does make such a big difference when you get involved and maximize your membership experience. I want to thank each and every one of you for your support of me this year, it has been an honor and privilege to serve as the IREM Chapter 42 President in Regards, Patti What New Fair Housing Act Guidelines Could Mean for You By Devon Thorsby October 7, 2016 Since this spring the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued several new guidelines and rulings to the Fair Housing Act, a law passed in 1968 that prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or family status. These new guidelines clarify certain actions or policies by landlords, property managers, real estate agents or lenders that could be classified as discrimination against those protected under the act. HUD has the ability to charge violators or have the U.S. Department of Justice take on a case on behalf of the complainant. Those who violate the law could be required to pay damages to the complainant, as well as pay civil penalties and punitive damages.
