2 John Swift SCA Director Regulatory Affairs John Swift is Director, Regulatory Affairs for SCA Packaging, one of Europe s largest manufacturers of corrugated cases and the paper and board used in their production. Based in Brussels, his responsibilities extend across Europe and include the external representation of the company for a wide range of environmental and technical issues, including product safety. He is active in a number of European trade associations and currently represents the UK on CEPI s Environment Committee and chairs their Environmental Data Issue Group. He is also a Vice-President of EUROPEN, the lobbying organisation for packaging and the environment. He has been very active in standardisation work, particularly the work of the CEN Committee on Packaging (CEN/TC261) where he is currently Chairman of its Sub Committee SC5. He is also active in the work of the ISO Committee (ISO/TC207) on Environmental Management and has been closely involved with issues concerning sustainable development both within his company and in the paper and board sector at national, European and international levels After graduating in Chemistry, John worked as a Materials Scientist before moving into quality management in the label printing sector. Over the last twenty years he has worked in quality, technical and environmental management in the corrugated packaging sector, so now has a total of nearly thirty years experience in the paper, print and packaging industry. His involvement with environmental issues started in the early 1990 s and grew to become his major activity within SCA Packaging.
3 Marco Mensink Energy & Environment Director CEPI Marco Mensink holds a Masters of Science Degree in Forestry and Business Management from the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. Before joining CEPI in March 2006, he worked for 6 years as Energy & Environment Director at the Royal Netherlands Paper and Board Association, also representing the Dutch industry Brussels. Mr Mensink started his career at Ernst & Young Management Consulting, working there for 6 years in Environmental Management and assessing the environmental issues in mergers acquisitions. In CEPI, he is responsible for the climate change, energy and environment issues vis a vis the EU institutions, presenting the industries interests. He represents the industry in the ECCP panel on the revision of the EU ETS and is member of the Alliance of Energy Intensive Industries. On behalf of CEPI, he is the chairman of the Climate Change Working Group of the International Council of Forest and Paper Associations (ICFPA), the global umbrella organisation of the forest based industry, working with the International Energy Agency, OECD, etc. ICFPA is an active participant in global fora and an observer to UNFCCC meetings. Forestry and climate change issues are key topics today, with EU focus points in the climate package, e.g. the EU ETS and renewable Energy legislation. Mr Mensink is a Dutch national, 40 years (1968), married and has three children. He is living in Brussels.
4 Dr Kay Williams Head of Business Assurance Defra I am a trained scientist, with a PhD from Imperial College, and for eight years carried out applied research at the Central Science Laboratory. I moved to policy work in Whitehall in 1999 where I undertook a variety of posts within the department ranging from agricultural CAP reform through to managing the development of a transactional IT system. After spending a couple of years at the British Embassy in Paris as a food safety and sustainable development attaché, I embarked on quality assurance and environmental standards work. More recently I have focussed on developing a product carbon footprint method with the British Standards Institute and Carbon Trust (PAS 2050). I currently head a team responsible for UK policy on the EU s Green Public Procurement initiative and the development of national sustainable product specifications for public sector procurers known as Buy Sustainable Quick Wins.
5 Elin Eriksson Department Deputy Manager IVL Mrs Elin Eriksson is deputy head of the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute department Environmental Performance. She has profound experience from environmental consultancy and research since 20 years, mostly based on LCA and environmental performance of products and other technical systems. She has also utilized methodologies such as Cost Benefit Analysis in studies commissioned by government and public and private collection and recycling companies. She is now working on methodologies for and performance of Carbon Footprint and product Climate Declarations for e.g. forestry industry companies, food products and for the EPD (Environmental Performance Declaration) system. She is also developing advanced internet calculators for carbon footprint of individuals and companies commissioned by the Swedish EPA, municipal organizations and industrial companies. She is active as an expert in the ISO Carbon Footprint project. She is a jury member of the Gothemburg Sustainability Award that has had price winners such as Mr Al Gore and Mrs Margot Wallström.
6 Tiina Pajula Senior Consultant KCL Tiina Pajula, KCL, SENIOR CONSULTANT, M.Sc. in Engineering (Paper Technology), Helsinki Univ.of Tech., Expert in environmental performance of pulp and paper industry, sustainability, LCA and carbon footprint. Development of KCL-ECO LCA software. Member of several international expert working groups. Actively involved in standardisation, eg. ISO and (LCA standard) and ISO (Social Responsibility standard). Work Package Leader in EU-project Ecotarget ( ). Evaluator in FP7-PEOPLE Fifteen presentations in international conferences and several publications.
7 Michael Sturges Director, Edge Michael Sturges has over thirteen years experience of delivering consultancy projects to the packaging, printing and paper supply chains. He has previously managed both environmental and strategic consultancy teams specializing in these sectors. His environmental project experience includes life cycle assessment studies, eco-label evaluations and environmental best practice. Michael has been the project leader on a number of high profile packaging and environment studies. Clients have included a wide range of stakeholders. As well as working for government agencies (the European Commission, UK Department of Trade and Industry, Japan Economic Planning Agency) Michael has worked with many major multi-national corporations in the packaging and paper supply chains (for example, Georgia Pacific, Tetra Pak, GlaxoSmithkline, Smith & Nephew). Recently, Michael has been applying his environmental skills to help a number of organizations to understand the magnitude and implications of their carbon footprint. Clients taking advantage of Michael s carbon footprinting expertise include Menzies Distribution, the Association of Newspaper and Magazine Wholesalers, and the Periodical Publishers Association. Michael has also worked on strategic consultancy projects for packaging, paper and print supply chain organizations. As well as co-ordinating a number of market intelligence projects to generate the data to support strategic decision making, Michael is a trained facilitator and has used these facilitation skills to run strategy and innovation workshops for many businesses. Michael also has extensive experience of a number of strategy management tools, such as cost modeling, SWOT analysis, STEEP analysis and roadmapping. He has applied these tools to help several businesses develop their future strategies for growth, cost control, organization and resourcing, research and development, and innovation. Clients have included Clorox, Kraft Foods, APEAL, Borax, Engelhard, Stora Enso and others. Michael is now the operations director of STFI-Packforsk Edge.
