Kyoto International Conference Center [Room C-1] Concurrent Panel Discussion Points in 2013: Over the 10 years of the STS Forum, the concept of Smart Cities has evolved quickly with many projects now active around the globe. This Forum offers a unique opportunity to take stock of Smart City developments, and to identify the areas with the highest potential for making cities work better for citizens. These could include energy, water and land use, transportation, citizens' security, health provision, community activities, city governance and organisation, business adaptability and willingness to invest. The barriers to realising opportunities could also be shared, especially if global solutions can be found. In particular, the need for data interoperability and interchanges. 4 CV and Pictures of Chair and Speakers Harbour, Malcolm Second Vice-Chairman; Member Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA); European Parliament BELGIUM Malcolm Harbour was elected to the European Parliament in June 1999, and re-elected in June 2004 and He is one of 3 Conservative members representing the West Midlands Region of the UK. He is Chairman of the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee and is a Member of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group. He is Vice-Chairman of the Parliament's Science and Technology Options Assessment Panel (STOA) and a Member of the Inter-Parliamentary Delegation to Japan. Malcolm Harbour takes a special interest in the EU single market, industry, science and technology policy. He is Chairman of the European Manufacturing Forum, and the Ceramics Industry Forum. He is a Governor of the European Internet Foundation. He has been the lead MEP (rapporteur) for major legislation on Telecoms, the Single Market and Motor Vehicle standards. Ota, Toshihiko Mayor Toyota City JAPAN Toshihiko Ota, the Mayor of Toyota City is a Chairman of the Toyota City Low-Carbon Society Verification Promotion Council established in August Being selected by the government of Japan as an Eco-model city in 2009, Toyota City has been working with the leading companies and organizations in the automobile, energy, housing, transportation, distribution, and other related fields to conduct verification programs to implement a new, low-carbon social system that benefits the residents. As of September 2013, the council is consisting of fifty organizations. Mayor Ota was born and raised in Toyota City. After graduating from Waseda University in 1977, he has been with the City of Toyota as an administrator. His inauguration as Mayor was in February 2013.

5 Schmitt, Gerhard Senior Vice-President Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich Gerhard Schmitt is ETH Zurich Senior Vice-President for ETH Global, Leaving Director of the Singapore-ETH Centre in Singapore, and Professor for Information Architecture at ETH Zurich. Since 2006, Gerhard Schmitt concentrates on the definition and design of Information Architecture (IA) as the next level of Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). The creation of a simulation, visualization and interaction platform for Future Cities is at the centre of his research. Gerhard Schmitt established the CAAD curriculum and research program since 1988 when he became Professor at ETH Zurich. His courses included design computing and programming, collaborative and shared authorship design, and global virtual design studios. His research focused on the development of intelligent design support systems, using artificial intelligence methods. From he was Vice President for Planning and Logistics of ETH Zurich. Koonin, E. Steven Director, Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP) New York University U.S.A. Steven E. Koonin was appointed as the founding Director of NYU's Center for Urban Science and Progress in April That consortium of academic, corporate, and government partners will pursue research and education activities to develop and demonstrate informatics technologies for urban problems in the "living laboratory" of New York City. Dr. Koonin previously served as the U.S. Department of Energy's second Senate-confirmed Under Secretary for Science from May 19, 2009 through November 18, As the Chief Scientist at BP from 2004 to early 2009, Dr. Koonin developed the long-range technology strategy for alternative and renewable energy sources. In 1981 he became a professor of theoretical physics at Caltech and served as Chairman of the Faculty from Dr. Koonin was the seventh provost of Caltech from

Olivier Piou is a member of the board of directors of Gemalto, and also a member of the board of directors of Alcatel-Lucent. Gemalto (Euronext NL GTO) is the world leader in digital securitywith 2011 annual revenues of 2 billion Euros and over 10,000 employees operating out of 74 offices and 14 Research & Development centers in 43 countries. Mr. Piou is a knight of the Legion of Honor in France. Püttgen, Hans Björn (Teddy) Director and Energy Systems Management Chair Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL) Hans B. (Teddy) Püttgen is Director of the Energy Center at EPFL -Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne since April Before that, Professor Püttgen was Georgia Power Professor and Vice Chair for External Affairs in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, (Georgia Tech). At Georgia Tech, he launched the National Electric Energy Test, Research and Application Center, NEETRAC, and served as its Director and Management Board Chair. Later, Teddy Püttgen served as Président and CEO of Georgia Tech Lorraine, France. He graduated from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. He holds graduate degrees in Business Administration and Management from the University of Lausanne. His PhD, in Electrical Engineering, is from the University of Florida. Teddy Püttgen, who is a Fellow of IEEE, served as President of the Power Engineering Society of IEEE in 2004 and 2005.

7 Kohno, Michinaga Senior Chief Engineer Hitachi, Ltd. JAPAN Michinaga Kohno obtained a BSc in Precition Engineering at Tokyo University. He started his career in Hitachi Ltd in 1972 at Production Engineering Research Lab, where he worked on production automation and robotics. In 1994, he took responsibility on Hitachi's internal information systems and became the Head of Information Systems Division in Later he served strategic roles in CTO's Office, and Corporate Strategy and Planning Office, where he was responsible for incubating new businesses. He was first engaged with the urban development business area in 2006, and has been Senior Chief Engineer of Smart City Project Division since His external appointments include Industrial Professional of Low Carbon Model Town Taskforce, APEC, and Certified International Expert, ISO TC268/SC1. Sterken, Elmer Rector Magnificus University of Groningen NETHERLANDS Elmer Sterken, Professor of Monetary Economics, became Rector Magnificus at the University of Groningen in Dr. Sterken served the University as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business. He was a member of the Board of Deans of the University of Groningen. Dr. Sterken also served as an Advisor to the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics on the Board of the European Institute for Advance Studies in Management in Brussels, as the Director of the Dutch Network of Graduate Studies in Business Economics and as a Board Member of the Energy Delta Institute. Elmer Sterken's research is focused on monetary policy and transmission, business cycle fluctuations, corporate investment and sports statistics. He has had visiting positions at Yale University, Ludwig-Maximilian University, Osaka University and Fudan University, at the Dutch Central Planning Bureau and the Dutch Central Bank. Dr. Sterken received his Ph.D. in Economics in 1990 and a Master in Econometrics (cum laude)in 1983.
