2 About Euro-CASE Euro-CASE, the European Council of Academies of Applied Sciences, Technologies and Engineering, is a European non-profit-making organisation of national academies from 21 European countries, founded in 1992 in Paris. The Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia will join Euro-CASE on January 1st Euro-CASE acts as a permanent forum for exchange and consultation between European Institutions, Industry and Research. It is a hub of collective intelligence: more than 6,000 academicians coming from academia and business, with multiple competences, are all elected by their peers. Euro-CASE is governed by a Board of senior representatives from each member Academy, its Executive Committee is composed of 7 members. Secretariat is based in Paris.

3 Main Mission Statements Provide impartial, independent and balanced advice on technology related issues with a clear European dimension. Pursue, encourage and maintain excellence in the fields of Engineering for the benefit of the citizens of Europe. Contribute to accept societal impacts of technological change. Attract young Europeans into careers in applied sciences and engineering to ensure future technological progress in Europe. Draw on experience and best practices of national academies. Vision 2020 of Euro-CASE : We are convinced that EU needs improved innovative capabilities for solving the grand challenges of the world.

6 Mutual benefits for the European Institutions and for Euro-CASE European institutions benefit from Euro-CASE wide pool of European expertise by: Preparing a structured dialogue with DGs of the European Commission Organizing common informal brainstorming sessions Inviting Euro-CASE to participate in official European events Requesting critical, independent reviews of documents related to Science and Technology Launching Opinion or Position Papers on future subjects or on completed programs of interest to the European Parliament and Commission Creating an ad hoc Euro-CASE Advisory groups on specific topics Accessing a large pool of experts from Industry Member academies largely benefit from Euro-CASE visibility and recognition in Brussels: its access to political institutions and policy makers in charge of them is greatly facilitated. It is hoped that views expressed by Euro-CASE play a role in policy definitions by European Institutions.

8 Euro-CASE Energy Platform Platform approach: Evaluate performance of the present EU ETS and identify reform options. Technology of present and future European Energy Systems. Evaluation criteria : Environmental compatibility, economic efficiency, acceptance, security of supply, global responsibility, resources, political implementation. Outcome: a policy paper targeting the new Commission First results to be presented at the Euro-CASE Annual Conference in Brussels, December 3, Ottmar Edenhofer, Dominique Ristori, Bernard Tardieu

9 Euro-CASE Engineering Education Platform The platform was launched in November Chair : EA CR (Engineering Academy of the Czech Republic). 10 Euro-CASE academies represented. Objectives: - «Conversion table» of existing engineering titles in Europe. - «Best practices» - a comparison of engineering education methods. - Foster cooperation with industry in all relevant engineering fields. - Find ways how to make engineering studies more attractive to female students. - Find ways how to motivate the state, media and parents.

10 EU-US Frontiers of Engineering Symposia Since 2010, the NAE and Euro-CASE have held an annual US-EU Frontiers of Engineering Symposium A 3 days meeting, gathering 60 outstanding scientists / engineers (ages 35-45) from US & European companies, universities, and government labs to discuss leading-edge research and technical work across a range of engineering fields. Convening engineers from disparate fields and challenging them to think about developments and problems at the frontiers of areas different from their own, leads to : establishment of contacts international collaboration among the next generation of leaders in engineering transfer of new techniques innovative approaches across various fields US-EU FOE meeting 9-12 November in Seattle, selected 4 topics are : Energy Storage Across Scales Protein Design for Therapeutic Applications Smart Homes Atoms to Airplanes: Designer/Engineered Aerospace Materials
