3 GOVERNANCE SYMPOSIUM 2017 John Ralston Chairman, AISNSW Board Monday, 10 th April 2017 Sydney Cricket Ground, Driver Ave, Moore Park, Sydney The 2017 AIS Governance Symposium will bring together leading public and corporate administrators to reflect upon the practice of governance in a range of institutional settings. What are the parallels and contrasts with school governance, and what are the ingredients of intelligent deliberation and decision making which contribute to the success of an organisation and the quality of schooling for our students? How have these organisations dealt with change, risk, strategy and the dynamic environment to which all modern organisations must respond and adapt? The AISNSW Governance Symposium is the leading Australian forum for the discussion and promotion of high-quality governance in independent schools. The Symposium attracts 500 to 600 delegates who are heads, business managers, chairs and board members, and many attend as whole school boards. Symposium participation will contribute six hours accreditation towards the NSW mandatory training requirement. As an additional feature in 2017, AISNSW will conduct a four-hour accredited program, Finance for Independent School Directors on the day following the Symposium, Tuesday, 11 th April This may benefit non-metropolitan delegates in particular. 6 SPEAKERS Mark Scott AO Secretary, NSW Department of Education; former Managing Director, Australian Broadcasting Corporation Mark Scott AO is the Secretary of the NSW Department of Education and has a distinguished record in public service, education and the media. Mark s career began as a teacher in Sydney. He built on his interest in education with senior policy and leadership positions with two NSW education ministers. Mark held senior editorial roles at Fairfax, including Education Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald and Editor-in-Chief of metropolitan, regional and community newspapers. From 2006 to 2016, Mark was Managing Director of the ABC, overseeing the creation of new services like iview, News 24, ABC3 and digital radio and the expansion of online and mobile services, such as the ABC News site and podcasting. He led a significant shift in the culture of the ABC. Mark holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Diploma of Education and a Master of Arts from the University of Sydney; and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Sydney and UNSW. Catherine Brenner Chairman, AMP; Non-Executive Director, Coca Cola Amatil and Boral; Board member, SCEGGS Darlinghurst Catherine is Chairman of AMP Limited and a non-executive director of Coca Cola Amatil Limited and Boral Limited. She is also a director of SCEGGS Darlinghurst Limited and a Founding Panel Member of Adara Partners, an independent corporate advisory firm where all fees generated on transactions directly benefit people living in extreme poverty through Adara Development. Catherine is a former senior investment banker and corporate lawyer with experience in corporate advisory and equity capital markets. She has served on public company boards in the financial services, resources, property and biotech sectors for over a decade. Catherine has also previously served as a member of the Takeovers Panel and as a board member and trustee of not-for-profit and government organisations, including the Sydney Opera House. Catherine has a Bachelor of Economics, Bachelor of Laws and a Masters of Business Administration.
7 Tracey Cain Director, Australian Public Affairs; Board member, Knox Grammar School Over the past 25 years, Tracey has advised the non-government schools sector on a range of public affairs matters from reputation building and market research through to critical incident and risk management. Her background is in journalism including in the Federal Parliamentary Press Gallery, time as a ministerial media adviser in Australia for an Education Minister, and as an advisor in the White House in the USA before establishing Australian Public Affairs 20 years ago. She has since worked with hundreds of independent schools, and significant schools associations such as the AISs, Catholic Education Offices, Christian Schools Australia, AHISA, and peak bodies for the Steiner, Lutheran, Seventh-day Adventist and Uniting Church schools. Tom Alegounarias Chair, NSW Education Standards Authority Tom Alegounarias was appointed Chair of the NSW Education Standards Authority in January He was previously the President of the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW (BOSTES) and the Board of Studies NSW, and Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Institute of Teachers. Tom is an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. He co-authored the Great Teaching, Inspired Learning reforms. He was a foundation Board member of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) Board. He has been Director of Equity and General Manager of Strategic Policy for the NSW Department of Education and Training. Tom has been Chair and Executive Officer of the Schools Resourcing Taskforce and inaugural chair of the Australian Centre for Equity through Education. Elizabeth Crouch Deputy Chancellor, Macquarie University; Chair, Non-Government School Not-for-profit Advisory Committee Elizabeth Crouch is the Chair of the Non- Government School Not-for-profit Advisory Committee, the Deputy Chancellor of Macquarie University, a non-executive Director of the Chandler Macleod Group, Chairperson of Health Infrastructure and transport audit committees and Chairperson of the Fair Trading Advisory Council. She is the former Chair of Railcorp, the Public Transport Ticketing Corporation and Deputy Chair of the City of Sydney Planning Committee. She is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Elizabeth has been involved with public company boards for over a decade, in addition to holding a number of significant appointments to government. She is experienced in the practical application of corporate governance principles and enterprise risk management, and also has significant experience in building, construction and infrastructure.
