2 About the Global Fairness Award On October 9, 2013, the Global Fairness Initiative (GFI) will host our 4th Annual Fairness Award Gala to celebrate the exceptional leaders whose work and lives have opened opportunity and access for arginalized counities. By honoring these outstanding individuals, GFI hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders to dedicate theselves to econoic justice, fairness and equality. This year is unique as we are celebrating GFI s 10 year anniversary. Founded by Karen Traontano with the leadership of President Willia J. Clinton as the first Board Chair, the organization began with one core goal: to ake our global econoy work for those who need it ost: the working poor. A decade later, GFI has steadily built a track record of success through innovative progras to reduce poverty, enfranchise inforal counities, and advance huan rights and livelihoods. In doing so, GFI has helped expand pro-poor initiatives and develop econoic opportunities for woen and sall-holder farers around the world. The Fairness Award Gala has brought together thousands of people in recognition of the ipact created when grass-tops and grass-roots leaders work together. 3 2013 Fairness Award Recipients Her Excellency Tarja Halonen, President of Finland Tarja Halonen served as the 11th President of Finland fro 2000 to 2012 and is the first feale to have held the office. While in office she earned record high approval ratings and was elected to two consecutive ters. A trained lawyer, Halonen began her career as the Social affairs and general secretary of the National Union of Finnish Students fro 1969 to1970, and after becae an attorney for the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions through She joined the Social Deocratic Party (SDP) of Finland in 1971, serving as parliaentary secretary to Prie Minister Kalevi Sorsa fro 1974 to 75, and was elected to the Helsinki City Council in 1977, where she served until In 1979, she began a 21-year run as an SDP eber of parliaent. Halonen also served in various inisterial roles prior to being elected President, including inister of social affairs and health (1987 to 90); inister of Nordic cooperation (1989 to 91); inister of justice, (1990 of 91); foreign affairs inister, (1995 of 2000). As President of Finland, Halonen advocated for inclusion of labor voices in governent. Outside of the Presidential office, Halonen has been an advocated for LGTB rights, serving as Chairan of Seta, the ain LGTB right organization in Finland, and publicly supported sae-sex arriage in Susan Berresford, President of the Ford Foundation Susan Berresford is the forer president of the Ford Foundation ( ) and currently a philanthropy consultant based in New York City. As president of one of the largest foundations in the world, Berresford oversaw progras across the globe that strengthen deocratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, proote international cooperation, and advance huan achieveent. Ms. Berresford joined the foundation s Division of National Affairs in 1970 as a research assistant, eventually becoing officer in charge of its woen s progras and then vice president for the U.S. and International Affairs progras. After then serving as vice president in charge of worldwide prograing, she was naed executive vice president and chief operating officer of the foundation, a position she held until she becae president in Before joining Ford, Ms. Berresford served as a progra officer fro 1965 to 1967 for the Neighborhood Youth Corp and worked fro 1967 to 1968 for the Manpower Career Developent Agency, where she was responsible for the evaluation of training, education, and work progras. Currently, Ms. Berresford is a board eber of nuerous organizations, and chairs United States Artists, Inc. Ms. Berresford also serves as a eber of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Aerican Acadey of the Arts and Sciences. Zeinab Al-Moani, President of Specific Union for Woen Farers in Jordan Zeinab Al-Moani is a Jordanian activist and social entrepreneur who founded the Sakhrah Woen s Society Cooperative in Al-Moani oved to the Sakhrah region after earning her B.A. in Eleentary Education, where she found herself inspired to establish progras to provide education for orphans and people with special needs while reducing poverty and uneployent aong working woen. She began her efforts by establishing the Zain Nursery and Kindergarten School in In 2003, she subsequently founded the Sakhrah Woen s Society Cooperative to play an active role in the developent of the counity and the reduction of poverty and uneployent through the econoic, social and cultural epowerent of woen. The cooperative s ebers cultivate, anufacture, package and arket agricultural and craft products, allowing the group to operate as a successful for-profit organization. At the sae tie, the cooperative provides a childcare progra and school and university grants for ebers children. The cooperative also offers the woen loans to start their own enterprises, as well as the necessary technical training to becoe project anagers of agricultural and dairy initiatives to create local eployent. In 2006, Zeinab Al-Moani s work was recognized with the King Abdullah II Award for Self-eployent and Leadership.
