Ho Non Wah s 11th Anniversary of Winter Camp was enjoyed by all, despite the early morning visits from a particularly chilly Jack Frost. Winter Camp is a great way for staff and campers alike to come out and earn merit badges, some of which are not normally offered at Camp HNW. We would like to thank all of the Arrowmen that came out for Winter Camp this year, as 98% of our volunteer staff were Arrowmen. Without your continued dedication we would not be able to continue to provide the excellent programs offered within our council. Upcoming Spring 2018 Events Spring Fellowship - February (75th Anniversary Kickoff) 2018 Dixie Fellowship - April Spring Ordeal - May Lodge Activity Attendance Policy Fall Fellowship Review OA Functions are reserved for members of the Order of the Arrow in good standing with the Lodge. Guests (non-oa members) are only invited to register and participate in our annual Seafood Dinner held Friday Night of our Lodge Fall Fellowship. Please help us by communicating this policy to your family and members within your unit. Once again, the Brothers of Unali yi Lodge 236 have put together one of the year s most fun events. Friday night s Family Seafood Fest and oyster roast was followed up by our Lodge s Vigil Call-Out ceremony where we called out 10 new Vigil Honor candidates. On Saturday, our chapters competed in several activities for the title of Chapter of the Year and our Lodge also had 16 brothers confirm their place in our Lodge by obtaining the rank of Brotherhood, afterwards that night we had our Vigil Banquet followed by a pie in the face of several adult leaders in the Lodge by our Lodge Officers, which was an epic fight the proportions of which many never had seen before and perhaps will never see again. Brotherhood Conversion Unali yi Lodge came through this year with enough Brotherhood conversion to get gold, helping our lodge immensely with 2018 s Lodge of the Year. Our Lodge helped over 45 Brothers confirm their place in our Order this year thanks to the hard work of our Ceremonies and Brotherhood Committees and many other individual Brothers working to keep Unali yi great and making it even better still. 2 Page 2 UNALI YI LODGE 236 Congratulations to our Newest Vigil Brothers The Vigil Honor is the highest honor that the Order of the Arrow can bestow upon one of its members for service to lodge, council or scouting. It dates back to the year 1915, when E. Urner Goodman became the first Vigil Honor Member. Since then, thousands of arrowmen have been selected for the Vigil Honor. 5 VOLUME XVIII, ISSUE 1 Founders Award Introduced at the 1981 NOAC, the Founder's Award was created to honor and recognize those Arrowmen who have given outstanding service to their lodge. The award is reserved for an Arrowmen who demonstrates to fellow Arrowmen that he or she memorializes in his or her everyday life the spirit of achievement as described by founder E. Urner Goodman and cofounder Carroll A. Edson. Page 5 While the Vigil Honor is a high mark of distinction, the Founders Award is used to recognize those Arrowmen, youth and adult, who have impacted the Lodge in a positive and lasting way. This is a rare and distinguished honor, to recognize the spirit of our Founders in another. Lodges may petition the National Council to present up to four awards annually, based on lodge membership. If the award is presented to more than one recipient, at least one must be under 21 years of age. This year Unali Yi Lodge recognized two deserving Arrowmen with the Founder s Award. 6 State of the Lodge Brothers, let us join together and celebrate the culmination of another memorable year in lodge history. This year has been an exciting year for our lodge. We sent over 100 Arrowmen to the Dixie Fellowship at Camp Barstow. Our spirited group helped us win awards in over 30 categories this year at the Dixie Fellowship, including First Place in Newsletter, NEXT Guide, and Planbook. The Lodge also too First Place in the Egg Toss, Tent Pitching, and Knowledge and Training. Unali yi Lodge took home First Place in Traditional Outfit, Fancy Outfit and Fancy Dance, along with many other placements and awards. We also Won for a 3rd year in a row, LODGE OF THE YEAR!! In May our Lodge was recognized as the first lodge in the Nation to receive the E. Urner Goodman Camping Award for 4 years in a row. This award is given annually to 8 lodges in the nation for our Support and Promotion of our home camp, Ho Non Wah. This was also the 5th time in Lodge History that we won this award. This summer 98% of our camp staff was comprised of Arrowmen from our Lodge. Each week the lodge Dance team and Ceremonies team put on a Dance performance and Call Out Ceremony during Parents night. We also had our first year of the OA Ice cream Social on the porch of the White House on Wednesday nights. This was a great time for brothers from many different lodges to come together for fellowship. Many Service projects were completed including, Renovations to the White House, Preparations for 2017 Summer Camp Season, Area Preparation for Bohicket Towne, Fishing Pier renovations, Hurricane Matthew & Hurricane Irma clean-up, and General camp maintenance, including the upkeep of trails and drainage ditches. We also had 22 members of our Lodge serve on staff for the 2017 National Scout Jamboree. Our achievements this past year is a result of the collective efforts of our youth officers, chairman and advisers. This truly has been another amazing year. Zachary Kontenakos Unali Yi Lodge Chief Advisor s Minute This year we enter our 75 th Anniversary year of our lodge. Over the past seven and a half decades we have accomplished a lot. We have been blessed with some great lodge leaders who have helped to form the fabric of our lodge. Each of these Arrowmen started as an ordeal candidate completing the challenges of their Ordeal and taking the solemn obligation of the Order of the Arrow. They answered a call to find the arrow by serving as committee chairman, lodge officers, or advisers. In the words of our founder E. Urner Goodman What each of us does impacts the future of the Order of the Arrow. I challenge you to look for ways to be of service in your home unit, your community and in our council. By answering the call of leadership we will continue to strengthen our lodge and the scouting program. I look forward to seeing what the future holds. The BEST is Yet to Come!
