WikiTree and One Name Studies
WikiTree Connects Collaboration on deep ancestors is between distant cousins who are serious about genealogical research and careful about sources.
WikiTree Connects Because all of WikiTree s Profiles are connected on the same system our collaboration is creating a single family tree that will eventually connect us all. This makes it easy for anyone to access and discover their roots. WikiTree focuses on what we do best: genealogical collaboration.

Getting Started One Name Studies Project The purpose of the One Name Studies Project is to provide you with a potentially valuable resource that will help you coordinate with others who are researching the same surname and to provide a space for collaboration. See the one name studies index page for the full list of surname studies.

Getting Started One Name Studies Project If you would like to start a One Name Study on WikiTree, or join with an existing study as a collaborator, please do the following: Ask Doug to award you the One Name Studies Project Member badge. Add one_name_studies to your list of followed tags. That way you'll see all our discussions in your G2G Feed.
Getting Started One Name Studies Project Join an existing Name Study as a collaborator by contacting the Study Coordinator or create your own study Please contact Doug after you create a project page for your surname study so that he can create redirects and ensure tags are correct. We want to make sure your project is successful by helping others find it.
Getting Started One Name Studies Project Our Goals Members maintain a Project Free-Space Profiles pages for communication, posting pictures, research notes, publication and sources, tables and any other helpful tools.

Sub-Project Templates are available. This way all sub projects include consistent project information
Getting Started One Name Studies Project Attention DNA Testers, Especially those with ydna Results! Are you looking for a new and useful way to get the most out of your DNA test results? There is no better place to gather all your information into one area for comparison and analysis than a One Name Study!
Attention DNA Testers, Especially those with ydna Results!
Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories Create A Basic ONS Category For Your Project: The basic category is the surname followed by "Name Study"Example: [[Category:Lockwood Name Study]]
Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories To Create an ONS Category That Combines Surname with Location: Structure the category beginning with the location followed by the surname and ending in "Name Study." Do not use an "s" on the end of the surname as this, in essence, changes the spelling of the surname. Add the State/Provincial/etc. level category
Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories

Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories Note: Never use [[Category:One Name Studies]] on your profiles. This is a "top level" category that should only be placed on your surname study category page and project page. We use this category to populate the One Name Studies Index page so we can't have individual profiles cluttering it up.
Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories
Link to MDA for the study in this geographic and with this Halpogroup Getting Started One Name Studies Project - Categories
Getting Started Tasks to get you on your way Start by adding your one name study category to your profiles. Look for other profiles with the same surname & post them to your study. These may be confined to a specific geographical area. Invite members by the same name or who are researching the same name to join your study. You can find them by clicking on the surname in bold on any of your profiles, then click on the "Smith Genealogists" or whatever surname you're researching, tab at the top of the page
Getting Started Task to get you on your way Does your study show up as a project on your Surname genealogists page? If it says no one has started a project for your name yet, but you have, ask one of the Leaders to help you redirect the project pages to your space page.

Getting Started Task to get you on your way Add your surname origin and meaning to your study. Add a table and post your ydna results. Encourage other members to do the same. If you have DNA test results from other family members, add the tests along with links to their profiles.
Getting Started Task to get you on your way Post your direct family line as a family unit & then invite others with the same surname to post their family line as a separate family unit, etc. Are there any famous notables by the same name? Add them to your study and encourage members to post their connections since they are usually proud of the connection and posting about it is discouraged on the notable's profile.
Getting Started Task to get you on your way Add commentary for discussion. Who are your brickwalls? Are there any weak links that need more sources? Are there any interesting stories passed down through your family? Talk about your journey on the research trail. What exciting things did you discover? Any skeletons in the closet? Any wise old tales debunked?
Getting Started Task to get you on your way Add sources and resources. Are there any published books based on your surname with possible links? Historical societies in your geographical area of study that hold files on your surname? Family Historical Societies? Websites that are dedicated to your surname? Links for further research? Advertise your study to other members via G2G & invite others to collaborate. Post updates on what is new or interesting in your project. The more we communicate on G2G about our projects, the better the One Name Studies Project will be.
Getting Started Help From the Community Come to our Genealogist-to-Genealogist (G2G) Forum and ask whatever questions you have. Be sure to tag your questions ONE NAME STUDIES to make sure they're seen by the right people. Browse past discussions about ONE NAME STUDIES.

Post about your One Name Study on Social Media. Create a page specific to your One Name Study. Web Crawlers will find your information and your page will appear in the search results pages. Use: Tags Keywords Get your One Name Study posted and network everywhere you can.
Post about your One Name Study on public genealogy message Boards, Like RootsWeb and others. Post about your One Name study on genealogy sites. Get your One Name Study posted and network everywhere you can.
Blog about it, Tweet about it, Instagram about it, Facebook about it and get people interested in helping to grow your Name Study, one profile at a time. Get your One Name Study posted and network everywhere you can.
