2 2 Purpose of the Studio The BUILDING TECHNOLOGY STUDIO aims at introducing the students to the complexity of the building design process, starting from the preliminary concept and briefing stage to the development of the documents needed to communicate design information to the construction stage. The Studio is based on the design activity, in which the student would acquire the ability to control and coordinate building technologies, structural elements and building physics behavior inside the design process.

4 Theme of the design project 4 the theme of the design project, on which students will develop their activities, will cover the definition of measures to requalify an urban area placed in the south-east sector of the city of Milan. The application context will be located within Mazzini district, near p.le corvetto. In particular, the tutorial will be related to the design of a social housing settlement.

5 5 Organization of the Studio Attendance is strictlyrequired. The students will work on groups of two-three people. Minimum two different nationalities should be represented into each group. The composition of the groups will be done by the students themselves. The studio should be considered as the place for the student to meet each other and work together. Teachers will be available to check and control the development of the students work and to do revision of the projects according with the timetable. The students will be asked to valuate the work of their colleagues during the three main compulsory presentation.

6 Work phases 6 1.CONCEPT DESIGN (november) Conceptual schemes and graphics. Masterplan and groundfloor plan (1:500). Schematic perspective views and diagrams of the outdoor urban relations with the context. Assonometric scheme of the structures, predimensioning of facilities spaces. Check list table of surfaces compared with the required functional program. Main vertical and horizontal distribution of spaces (site map, ground floor, other plans, sections and elevations 1:200-1:100) Preliminary energy report (Climate analysis, shadow analysis and solar availability) DOCUMENTS: 1 Summary Panel A0 format (portrait orientation). Powerpoint presentation (max 20 slides including eventual movies). Summary text max one A4 page describing the concept.

13 13 EXAM DOCUMENTS -The 3 summary panels submitted for the three terms (concept, scheme design and detail drawings). - Allthe drawings that the student considers important to properly explain the project. - Technical sheets book of materials - Structural calculation reports. - Energy report. - Summary A3 book of the entire work including the pictures of the three maquettes. - CD with files of the all drawings images and documents produced, organized by file extension: dwg, skp, jpg, doc, xls, pdf.

14 14 Assessment Methods The final exam is individual and students will be assessed through the valuation of the activities performed in the project workshop, in terms of project documents and by the ability of the student to present the activities performed in the programme. The final exam will also assess, through theoretical questions on the main topics covered in the programme, the student's ability to connect the various topics with one another and with previous studies.
