Find details in timetable Description This studio lays down the disciplinary foundations for architectural design. Through small scale and experimental design projects, the course introduces the main concepts and activities of architectural design that is, making and thinking of human inhabitation, including space, form, order, structure, material, scale, proportion, as well as the relation between plan, section and elevation. The studio introduces manual and digital forms of representation as design tools. The aim of this design studio is to develop inquiry, literacy, and compositional skills in architectural design; placing a focus on manual as well as digital techniques of architectural representation. In doing so it will consider the similarities and distinctions between manual and digital techniques as well as developing potential overlaps. You will be introduced to a range of key spatial and architectural terms and will use them to develop a vocabulary for designing in three dimensions. Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) By the end of the course students will be able to: 1. Analyse design method in the context of design and architectural precedents. 2. Design architecture comprising of interpretation of the design brief, conceptual design and schematic design to an elementary level of resolution. 3. Demonstrate elementary skills in the application of social, ethical, environmental and regulatory knowledge to architectural design. 4. Apply elementary skills in architectural communication with an emphasis on hand sketching (section, axonometric and perspective) and digital representation (rendering, animation and dissemination). 5.
