1 COURSE DESCRIPTION - ADVANCED PLACEMENT ART AP Drawing Portfolio, AP 2D Design Portfolio, AP 3D Design Portfolio COURSE DESCRIPTION This course offers art students a concentrated Art program, which qualifies them to apply for college credit in Art. Emphasis is centered on studio work, preparation of portfolios, and the submission of a portfolio for an Advanced Placement grade. In the spring each student will exhibit his/her work in a one person show. OBJECTIVES This course is certified AP by the College Board and includes the seven required aspects of an AP Studio Art course. These parts are designated as (AP C-1 through 7). The student will: 1. Develop the three areas of the AP Studio Art Portfolio: Breadth, Concentration, and Quality. (AP C-1) 2. Develop a personal style and demonstrate individual expression and voice through idea development, composition, and the use of art media. (AP C-5) 3. Develop a comprehensive portfolio of work that shows mastery of concept, composition, and skill with media. (AP C-2) (AP C-4) 4. Develop a coherent body of work that shows and investigation of a strong visual idea or theme. (AP C-3) 5. Make informed critical decisions regarding intent, composition, and form/content relationships. (AP C-5) 6. Further develop an awareness of artists and cultural and historical art movements. 7. Demonstrate an awareness of visual communication through the use of the elements and principles of art. 8. Demonstrate visual literacy and associated vocabulary. (AP C-6) 9. Explain and defend his/her artwork to classmates and teacher in presentation and critique situations. (AP C-6) 10. Develop a practice of self-examination and self-critique with regard to art production. (AP C-6) 11. Develop aesthetic judgment through the process of critiquing art. (AP C-6) 12. Develop aesthetic judgment through the production of written statements of purpose and the documentation of personal development. (AP C-6) 13. Demonstrate experience with a variety of art issues and media within a given area: drawing, 2D design, or 3D design. (AP C-1), (AP C-4) 14. Demonstrate an understanding of artistic integrity with regard to image, idea, and composition (AP C-7)

2 SPECIFIC COURSE ACTIVITIES The student will: 1. Develop works of art through an idea development process that includes the use of written statements, visual references, compositional sketches, and a model of the completed piece. (AP C-3) 2. Develop a concentration of pieces that share a common theme or intent that includes 10 to 12 pieces that satisfies the Concentration section of the AP Portfolio. (AP C-3) 3. Develop the Breadth section of the Advanced Placement Portfolio that requires work in a variety of media that address various art issues within their studio area. example: Drawing: figure drawing, perspective drawing, still life, inventive images, etc. 2D Design: color theory, perspective, use of text and image, etc. 3D Design: line in space, mass and volume, texture, atectonic use of space, geometric design, organic design, etc. (AP C-4) 5. Participate in discussions with the teacher regarding progress and ideas. (AP C-6) 4. Explore and refine use of media. (AP C-4, C-2) 5. Critique work of classmates and his / her own work. (AP C-6) 6. Research the work of contemporary and historical artists. 7. Read required text materials. 8. Develop work that satisfies the quality section of the AP Portfolio. (AP C-2, C-4) 9. Develop written statements of intent and analysis. (AP C-6) 10. Prepare the digital photos required for the AP Portfolio. (AP C-1) 11. Prepare and submit a portfolio. (AP C-1) 12. Present a display of their work in the AP Art Show. (SEL) EVALUATION A. Critique participation is also evaluated. B. Unit 1: Breadth Produce 12 original works of art that incorporate a variety of design and /or drawing issues, and demonstrate the use of variety of media and techniques. (SEL) Unit 3: AP Art Show and AP Portfolio Preparation Prepare the Concentration artwork for presentation in a one-person show, prepare images and actual work for submission of the AP Studio Art Portfolio to the College Board.
