2 Brief Course Description Students will be introduced to the fundamental art and design theory and skills essential to design and visual communication. Lecture and projects will emphasize elements of art and principals of design. Students will be informed and influenced by studying graphic design history and contemporary design. Students will study the historical context of graphic design while developing skills in artistic perception, critiquing, and application of design strategies through experiences that emphasize solving visual art problems. Students will develop an awareness of historical trends in design as well as themes and subject matter from diverse times, places and cultures. Color theory and perception, composition, typography, product marketing and multi-media design will be explored with emphasis on appropriate, effective communication and aesthetic valuing. Students will develop an independent portfolio of work and create an exhibit of their work demonstrating mastery of VPA standards as a capstone project. History of Course Development This course was developed as part of a media arts pathway in response to keen interest?? students exhibited for digital arts and the desire to learn more about this field of study. It is the foundation course where students learn the elements of art, principles of design and fundamental processes for creating art using a variety of traditional and digital tools. After completion of this course students?? have the foundation knowledge and skills to succedd in other pathway courses including??graphic Design 2, Photography, and Video Productions. 5 The purpose of this course is for students to attain the following goals and outcomes in visual arts. Apply design knowledge and theory to purposeful visual communication. Acquire artistic knowledge, perception, and technical skills to express and communicate ideas visually and graphically. Develop a system of assessment of student work through critique that will give students an understanding of market, message and meaning within design. Gain design and communication skills using digital and traditional media as tools to create art and demonstrate understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design Learn how to communicate through imagery for a directed purpose. Understand major art historical influences, history and purpose of graphic design and how to incorporate historical context into contemporary design. Extend knowledge gained from digital media into other art forms and traditional art making media. Exhibit and present own work to a variety of audiences. Course Outline With an understanding of elements of art and principles of design, students will create basic design and visual communications solutions using traditional and digital mediums and tools. Artistic Perception: Processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to a given art. Summative assessments of understanding of concepts, completion of all elements and quality of final production and presentation are intended to clarify and quantify students' increasing knowledge and skills in theory and practical application of design and art. Class discussion and formal critique of student work is an integral course assessment designed to develop and enhance students' aesthetic valuing and ability to compare and contrast their work with that of others. Students write summaries of their work analyzing their concepts, process, standards mastered and personal evaluation of their own and others??? work which is intended to increase and improve their communication and literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, presenting and visual representation of concepts and ideas.
