WHAT AREAS OF LEARNING DOES THIS ASSESSMENT ADDRESS? The successful completion of this task requires students to focus on the space, place and uses of the built environment and how people create, construct and modify their surroundings for a wide range of purposes. Students when designing environments need to consider the functional, physical and material properties, aesthetic, environmental, socio-cultural, human form and scale and safety aspects of the development. 2. WHY IS THE COMPLETION OF THIS ASSESSMENT IMPORTANT? Students develop thinking skills experientially and learn about technologies, and use a range of materials, tools and techniques to design and produce a landscape designed model park bench. Through this practical experience it leads students to develop, select and apply technological skills involved in designing and producing. This includes processes of analysing, planning, producing, evaluating and maintaining the material and information needs of our society.

2 3. WHAT STEPS DO I TAKE TO COMPLETE THIS TASK? Task Outline Recreational parks are an ever increasing part of the urban landscape environment. They provide valuable recreation and healthy exercise for many children, teenagers, young adults and the young at heart adults, as well as a place for important social interaction with peers and friends alike. Your task is to research, design and evaluate a model park bench which will be designed to fit and complement a chosen area. The park bench will be part of the urban landscape and reflect the surrounding built environments including buildings, parks and housing estates. Students are to complete their park benches and portfolios using the following information and scaffold which follows the worksheets issued in class. Analysing the brief (a) Write a short statement that summarises what you intend to do. (worksheet 1) (b) Who is the intended user? What are the limitations to the design? (c) What will the park bench have to look like to fit into the surrounding area? (d) Why is it important for a designer to take into account creativity, as well as a sense of identity and community with their designs? Ideas and research Brainstorm (a) Using your chosen landscape area theme, sketch designs for the bench back of your model park bench. (worksheet 2) (b) Draw a three dimensional sketch of your model park bench, adding highlights, shadows and shading to enhance the drawing. (worksheet 3) (c) Write a list of equipment and its purpose that you will need to produce the model park bench. (worksheet 4) (d) List the tools and equipment required for the manufacture of the model park bench. For each of the tools required briefly explain the safety requirements for its use. (worksheet 5) Application Construction steps (a) List the steps you will need to follow to construct the model park bench. (Worksheet 6) Project Management a) Fill in the Gantt chart to keep your project on track and to ensure it is completed before the submission date. (worksheet 7)

3 Evaluation a) Write an evaluation of the processes you used in the construction of the model park bench and the finished product itself. Details for Submission The successful completion of this task requires submission of the practical model park bench in class by the due date and the design folio and worksheets submitted in printed form in class, or via Moodle as a Word document by 3p.m. of the due date. 4. HOW WILL MARKS BE AWARDED TO MEASURE MY LEARNING? The portfolio will also be marked against the Literacy Marking Criteria. The portfolio worksheets and worksheet questions requires students to correctly use Technology technical terms, correctly use punctuation, structure sentences correctly, demonstrate paragraphing that flows and supports the question and the overall structural components of the text type are correct. The mark awarded for the literacy component will be converted to mark out of 5.
