1 LESSON PLAN FOR GRADES TEACHER RESOURCES 7-9 STRANGE SHAPES: Sketching in Surrealism Grade Level: 7-9 Lesson Length: 7-10 Days Materials: Copic sketchbook paper or X-Press It Blending Card Copic 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set Objectives: A. Students will learn about Salvador Dali and the surrealist art movement. B. Students will learn about organic and geometric shapes, juxtaposition, and color theory. C. Students will create a surrealist image using the Copic 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set. National Visual Arts Standards: Students will use subjects, themes, and symbols that demonstrate knowledge of contexts, values, and aesthetics that communicate intended meanings in artworks. Students will analyze, describe, and demonstrate how factors of time and place (such as climate, resources, ideas, and technology) influence visual characteristics that give meaning and value to a work of art. 2 PROJECT DIRECTIONS 1. Introduce students to Salvador Dali s surrealist artwork. 2. Review and discuss relevant art terms and techniques including: the discovery of shapes (organic vs. geometric) color theory (related to the colors in the 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set) juxtaposition 3. Give students time to create three to five thumbnail sketches based on a chosen surrealist idea; sketches should include both organic and geometric shapes. (Often, landscapes or animals are used as the focus in surrealism.) 4. Have students share their thumbnails in small groups for feedback and suggestions. 5. Once a thumbnail is chosen and approved, students are given the Copic 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set to begin drawing. Visit for free downloads, information, and color charts. Check

3 6. Students should begin drawing their sketch with one of the lighter colors in the Copic 6-piece Earth Essentials Sketch set. The preliminary sketch shown was drawn with B41. The sketch lines will eventually be covered with many layers of color. 7. Once preliminary sketches are complete give a review or demonstration of Copic coloring and blending techniques. Using the Copic 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set, discuss color theory and the color family relationships that will be used in the completed drawings. 4 8. Give students the remaining time to color their illustrations. a. Generally, starting with the background is a good practice. Remind students to use directional line to create texture and to layer color to create shading. b. Using flicking motions when applying ink will create quick gradients and highlights. c. 5 d. Blend colors together by overlapping shades and by smoothing with the lighter of the two. Visit for free downloads, information, and color charts. Check

6 e. Continue to use colors in pairs to fill in the remaining space. Remind students to work within the surrealist style when choosing colors for objects. (i.e., green for the sky instead of blue.) Visit for free downloads, information, and color charts. Check

7 f. Outline each shape by using the sharp edge of the chisel nib. g. Encourage students to mix and blend colors across families to create deeper shadows. (It is important to understand color families and color theory before this step. Layering green over blue will create a darker blue-green. Layering green over brown, and then layering brown on top again will create deeper brown tones.) Assessment Final project can be evaluated based on: use of organic and geometric shapes, use of all six colors from the Copic 6-Piece Earth Essentials Sketch set, quality of finished drawing (no negative space unless logical for the image), and demonstrated understanding of surrealist concepts in subject matter and artwork.
